 This study aimed to evaluate the inclusion of Brazil nut oil in diets for breeder cocks on performance, semen analyses, biochemical serum profile and testicular morphology. Forty-two Rhode Island Red breeder cocks with 40 weeks of age were used. The experimental design was completely randomized consisting of seven levels of Brazil nut oil (0; 0.30; 0.60; 0.90; 1.20; 1.50 and 1.80%) in the diets. Data collected were evaluated by polynomial regression. Differences (p < 0.05) were detected in feed conversion, semen volume, motility, vigor, pH, swirling and concentration, in which the inclusion of Brazil nut oil in the diets improved the reproductive performance. Differences (p < 0.05) were also detected in the biochemical serum profile (triglycerides, cholesterol and blood pH); the inclusion of Brazil nut oil caused a large increase in blood triglycerides and cholesterol levels, consequently, changing the blood pH. The Brazil nut oil can be used as an energetic additive in diets given to breeder cocks, promoting better reproductive performance, without changing semen and testicular morphology, but altering the biochemical serum profile of the birds.

Groups of Rhode Island Red chicks were fed a mash made up from East African feedingstuffs or that diet supplemented with a high level rate of aureomycin—97 g. aureomycin hydrochloride per ton of feedingstuff. The chicks were kept on wire for 8 weeks. The initial improved growth rate of the chicks fed the aureomycin supplemented feedingstuff was not maintained, nor was there any statistical indication that the addition of aureomycin improved the feed conversion rate.Although the mortality rate appeared to be very much lower in the chicks fed the aureomycin supplement, the evidence was too limited to allow this to be attributed solely to the effects of the aureomycin.The experiment illustrates the need for careful design in order that the effect of the factors to be tested may be separated from the effects of other factors contained in the experiment and not confounded with them. Moreover, advanced statistical analysis should be used as an invaluable aid to, but not a substitute for, visual or graphical examination of results, for such examination often yields valuable indications of possible lines of analysis and may avoid the drawing of unjustified conclusions.


Intermittent Lighting Improves the Efficiency of Artificial Insemination in Cage Housed Laying Hens Kavtarashvili A.Sh., Kolokolnikova T.N. Federal Scientific Center “All-Russian Research and Technological Poultry Institute” of Russian Academy of Sciences Omsk Agrarian Scientific Center Summary: The effects of different lighting regimes on the oviposition schedule, productive performance, and reproductive efficiency in cage housed laying hens of layer parental flock (Hisex White-R) were studied; the reasonable regime of artificial insemination (AI) under intermittent lighting is proposed. It was found that intermittent lighting regime 1L:4D:4L:1D:4L:10D compared to the constant lighting significantly alters oviposition schedule: under this regime 82.3% of all daily eggs were laid until 9 am (vs. 66.6% in control). This regime and AI at 10 am improved the productive and reproductive performance compared to control (constant lighting 16L:8D and AI at 12 am): mortality by 1.9%, egg production per initial hen by 3.8%, egg weight by 1.1%, percentage of eggs suitable for incubation by 1.9%, egg fertility by 0.9%, hatchability by 2.3%, hatch of chicks by 2.9%, feed conversion ratio (kg of feed per 10 eggs) by 5.3%, the expenses of electric energy for lighting (per 1000 eggs suitable for incubation) by 54.5%.  This study aimed to evaluate the increasing levels (0, 1, 2, 3 e 4%) of fish by-product meal in diets for laying hens on performance, egg quality and economic analysis. A total of 160 Dekalb White hens with 52-wk old were distributed in a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replicates of eight birds each. The experiment lasted 84 days divided into four periods of 21 days. Estimates of fish by-product meal levels were determined by polynomial regression. Differences (p < 0.05) were detected for all variables of performance, in egg weight, yolk and albumen percentage, yolk and albumen height, feed cost and production cost, in which the inclusion of fish by-product meal in the diets showed better results. It can be concluded that fish by-product meal can be used in diets for hens as alternative feed, with better results in egg production, feed conversion, egg weight, yolk-albumen ratio and a reduction in feed cost and production cost.

The present study investigated the effects of dietary carob (Ceratonia siliqua) syrup supplementation on growth performance, haematological, serum biochemical and immunological parameters of tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus. Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were formulated to contain carob syrup at levels of 0%, 5%, 2.5%, 1.25%, and 0.625%. Fish were fed experimental diets for 60 days. There were no particular differences in weight gain, feed conversion ratio, specific growth rate, red blood cell count, haematocrit ratio (%), serum total protein, albumin, and globulin levels of fish fed experimental diets. However, dietary carob syrup especially with 1.25% incorporation significantly decreased serum glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol levels. The dietary carob syrup especially at 1.25% significantly increased the phagocytic activity, phagocytic index, respiratory burst and potential killing activity. In conclusion, findings of the present study indicate that feeding tilapia with a diet containing 1.25% carob syrup over a period of 60 days might be adequate to improve immune parameters and serum biochemical variables without any adverse effect on growth performance and haematological parameters of fish.

ABSTRAK. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengukur seberapa besar pengaruh minyak ikan yang sudah terenkapsulasi terhadap kolesterol darah dan performa pada Domba. Penelitian telah dilakukan di Sub Unit Pelayanan Pengembangan Pembibitan Ternak Domba dan Kambing (SUPPPTDK) Bunihayu, Subang pada tanggal 20 Januari 2020 sampai 27 Maret 2020. Sebanyak 18 ekor domba Ekor Tipis jantan dengan bobot 15,99±0,98 kg dialokasikan ke dalam 3 perlakuan secara acak. Domba tersebut diberi ransum perlakuan yang disuplementasi dengan mikroenkapsulasi minyak ikan sebanyak 0% (P0), 2,5% (P1), dan 5% (P2). Data yang terkumpul dilakukan analisis ragam dan bila hasil berbeda nyata maka dilanjutkan dengan uji Duncan. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa mikroenkapsulasi minyak ikan dapat menurunkan kolesterol darah (P0,05), namun tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap pertambahan bobot badan, konsumsi dan konversi ransum (P0,05). Penurunan kadar kolesterol terjadi pada kelompok domba dengan perlakuan mikroenkapsulasi sebanyak 2,5% (P1) dan mikroenkapsulasi 5% (P2). Kadar kolesterol darah masing-masing perlakuan berturut-turut adalah 100,70 mg/dl (P0); 96,20 mg/dl (P1); dan 78,76 mg/dl (P2). Rataan yang terbaik pada pertambahan bobot badan, konsumsi bahan kering harian, dan konversi ransum terdapat pada P2 yaitu 63,96 g/hari, 574,13 g/hari, dan 9,08. Hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa mikroenkapsulasi minyak ikan dapat menurunkan kolesterol darah, dengan penurunan tertinggi pada pemberian 5%.  (The impact of microencapsulation fish oil in feed on blood cholesterols and performance on sheep) ABSTRAK. This study measured the effect of encapsulated fish oil on blood cholesterol and sheep performance. The study was conducted at the Bunihayu Sheep and Goat Breeding Services Bunihayu, Subang on January 20, 2020 to March 27, 2020. A total of 18 male thin-tailed sheep 15.99±0.98 kg were allocated randomly into 3 treatments. The sheep were given feed supplemented with fish oil microencapsulation of 0% (P0), 2.5% (P1), and 5% (P2). The data were collected and analyzed by analysis of variance and, if the result is significantly different, continued by Duncan's test. The results showed that fish oil microencapsulation decreased blood cholesterol levels (P0.05). However, it did not affect body weight gain, consumption, and feed conversion (P0.05). Decreased levels of cholesterol occurred in the group of sheep with 2.5% microencapsulation (P1) and 5% microencapsulation (P2). Blood cholesterol levels of each treatment were 100.70 mg/dl (P0); 96.20 mg/dl (P1); and 78.76 mg/dl (P2), respectively. Averagely, the highest body weight gain, dry matter intake and feed conversion were found in P2 as much as 63.96 g/day, 574.13 g/day, and 9.08, respectively. The results can be concluded that microencapsulation of fish oil can reduce blood cholesterol, with the highest decrease at the level of 5%.

Most poultry farmers in Nigeria feed their laying birds twice a day with one bag of 25 kg to 200 layers which translate to 125g/bird/day, while very few feed once or thrice a day and there has been little or no documentation on how many times laying hens should be fed in a day to optimize profit. Thus, this study was designed to investigate the performance and egg qualities of Isa-Brown layers fed different quantities of feed at varying feeding frequencies. Three hundred and sixty (360) 16-weeks in-lay Isa-Brown layers were used in this trial. The treatment consisted of 95g, 105g, 115g, and 125g of feed per day at varying frequencies of once, twice and thrice per day. The birds were housed in California type cages, 3 birds per cage unit, 5 cage units per replicate, and 6 replicates per treatment. A completely randomized experimental design with a 4x3 factorial was adopted. Results at the end of the trial showed that bird fed 115g of feed twice per day had the highest percentage hen-day production (85.24%), highest egg mass (56.69g) and best feed conversion ratio (1.96) while lowest percentage hen-day production (62.02%) and lowest egg mass (39.22g) were observed in hen fed 95g of feed thrice per day and worst feed conversion ratio (2.50) was recorded in bird fed 125g of feed thrice per day. The bird fed 115g twice per day had the highest net profit (N637.63) while the lowest net profit (N199.33) was recorded in bird fed 125g thrice per day. It could be concluded that for optimum laying performance and to save time and labour expended in feeding birds thrice per day, feeding laying Isa-Brown birds the required feed quantity (115g) twice per day would be most economical.

The paper provides the results of model tests planned with an optimized experimental design method. Captive-model tests have been carried out according to such a design on a computerized planar-motion carriage with a model of a fast catamaran with five varying factors (drift angle, rate-of-yaw amplitude, sinkage, trim and heel angles) and with all six force/moment components measured at each run. The measured values were used after preprocessing for construction of polynomial regression models for all force components acting upon the catamaran's hulls. It is demonstrated that the optimized experimental design method allows rather complicated mathematical models for maneuvering hydrodynamics forces to be obtained from captive model tests at a reasonable level of effort.

Two experiments were carried out to investigate the dietary methionine requirement for fast and slow-growing Chinese yellow-feathered breeds during the starter phase, based on growth variables and regression models. In Experiment 1, a total of 2880 one-day-old Lingnan chicks (fast growing breed) were used to test the methionine requirement from 1 to 21 days of age for males and females separately. Of each gender, 1440 birds were allocated into 6 dietary methionine levels (0.28%, 0.32%, 0.37%, 0.43%, 0.50% and 0.63%), each with 6 pen replicates of 40 chicks. Experiment 2 had the same design with Guangxi chicks (slow growing breed) from 1 to 30 d of age. Results indicated that significant nonlinear or quadratic responses to increasing dietary methionine levels were observed in body weight, daily gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio of both breeds. In summary, the quadratic polynomial regression showed that the optimal methionine requirements for maximal growth performance of Lingnan chickens were 0.52–0.58% in males, 0.51% in females, and 0.53% in mixed genders. The corresponding values for Guangxi breed were 0.53% in males by quadratic polynomial regression and 0.43% in females, and 0.48% to 0.49% in mixed sexes by exponential asymptotic models.

Crossbred Hampshire–Duroc boars were compared to purebred Hampshire, Duroc and Landrace boars for seven semen characteristics and for reproductive performance under competitive double mating. A total of 14 boars were represented: three Hampshire–Duroc, three Hampshire, three Duroc and five Landrace. Significant breed of boar effects were observed on semen volume (P <.01), sperm concentration (P <.10), concentration score (P <.05), morphology score (P <.10), live–dead rate score (P <.05) and total semen score (P <.01). Landrace and Hampshire–Duroc boars produced more than twice the volume of semen produced by purebred Hampshires and Durocs. Hampshire, Duroc and Hampshire–Duroc boars had greater sperm concentrations and concentration scores than Landrace. Hampshire–Duroc boars ranked highest for morphology and total semen scores, but lowest for live–dead rate score. When double-mated to Landrace sows, breed of boar had no significant effect on conception rate but significantly affected (P <.05) percent of litter sired. Hampshire, Duroc and Hampshire–Duroc boars sired almost twice as many pigs as the Landrace.
