The use of venous catheters for hemodialysis is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic renal failure. The implant of the dual lumen catheter (DLC) assists the patient in a worsening situation but commonly the patient remains with the DLC back home and this requires a series of important measures. The use of printed educational materials becomes an important tool to assist this type of care. Thus, the objective was to create and validate an instructive folder for the self-care of the patient using a catheter for hemodialysis. It is a methodological study of creation and evaluation of technology, in three stages. For validation of the content and style the material was submitted to the evaluation by experts in the area. 92.3% of the participants stated that the folder demonstrates clarity in their language, 53.8% of the participants suggested change and addition of information, and the same percentage also states that the instrument is attractive. The main suggestions were to change some term/word used in the folder, suggest changes to the images used, and include some information in the content. It is presumed then that the use of educational materials results in benefits to the patients who will receive the guidelines for self-care. Thus, the importance of nurses to use these resources for chronic renal patient care is emphasized.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to build and validate educational self-care technology for informal caregivers. Methods: methodological study, anchored in the Delphi technique, carried out in a municipality in the state of Paraná, Brazil, between September 2018 and November 2019. It was developed in three stages: situational diagnosis; elaboration of educational technology; content and appearance validation by expert judges and informal caregivers, using the content validity index and coefficient of variation. Results: after the steps of the methodological process, an educational technology called “Taking Care of Those Who Care” was produced, as an information tool that deals with the self-care of informal caregivers, receiving a content validity index above 0.86 and a variation coefficient. below 20% on all items. Conclusions: the educational technology was built and evaluated with satisfactory rates by the specialists and target audience, showing a high correlation of agreement, characterizing it as adequate and informative to informal caregivers.

ABSTRACT Objectives: Describe the importance of guidelines provided during pharmaceutical consultation about compliance with medication therapy based on interviews with polymedicated elderly patients. Methods: A qualitative methodological study carried out during consultations with 40 elderly patients of both genders at the Health Care Center for Elderly Patients and Caregivers. The study used the technique of content analysis, applying a questionnaire with two open questions. Results: Two categories and eight subcategories emerged after the transcription of interviews and exhaustive reading of the data. The category “Pharmaceutical consultation as an education instrument for the self-care of polymedicated elderly patients” presented the highest frequency. The subcategory with the highest frequency was “Concern of elderly patients about self-care”. Final Considerations: In the case of polymedicated elderly patients, pharmaceutical consultation is an important education instrument which, through the provision of pharmaceutical guidelines, allows the minimization of concerns about pharmacotherapy, contributing to compliance and self-care.

Heart failure patients seen in the outpatient home care setting and in cardiology clinics have repeated emergency department visits, hospital admissions, and readmissions despite receiving education about their medications diet and self-care interventions such as daily weights. The objective of this evidence-based practice change was to determine, in home care patients, whether the use of standardized teach-back methodology educational materials would improve their knowledge and confidence in the self-care of their chronic disease. Of the 22 patients enrolled, 15 were not readmitted to the hospital within 9 months of home care admission. The Self-Care of Heart Failure Index revealed an improvement in patient and caregiver contributions to heart failure self-care maintenance (daily adherence and symptom monitoring). The findings suggest that engaging patients by increasing their knowledge of their disease and their self-confidence can reduce hospitalizations and subsequent readmissions.

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to design and evaluate the psychometric properties of an instrument for understanding female adolescents’ reproductive and sexual self-care behaviors. Methods A methodological study was conducted. In the qualitative phase, individual in-depth interviews were performed to develop the initial questionnaire. In the quantitative part, the psychometric properties of the questionnaire were evaluated. Findings The initial questionnaire with 128 items was reviewed by the research team and taking into account the cut-off point 1.5 for the item impact and 0.62 for the content validity ratio (CVR), the number of questions fell to 82 items. S-CVR and S-content validity index (CVI) rations were 0.83 and 0.91, respectively. Exploratory factor analysis led to 74 items in seven dimensions. The alpha Cronbach’s coefficient for the whole questionnaire was 0.895 and the intra-cluster correlation coefficient was 0.91. Conclusion The questionnaire developed in this study is reliable and valid for assessing female adolescents’ sexual and reproductive self-care.

Abstract Chinese immigrant caregivers face unique self-care difficulties in the United States due to language barriers, cultural isolation, and occupational stress. This study aimed to conduct a formative evaluation on a caregiver self-care curriculum of an app designed for Chinese immigrants in the United States. Using a co-design approach in 2019, 22 Chinese immigrant caregivers in Los Angeles county were recruited through purposive sampling method. The directed content analysis was adopted to analyze the qualitative data using NVivo 12.1.0 software. We organized the findings under two main contents: self-care and caregiving. Three categories were identified under the self-care content: physical health, emotional and mental health, and support resources. Sixteen subcategories under physical health (e.g., dietary supplements), five subcategories under emotional and mental health (e.g., depression) and eight subcategories under support resources (e.g., support and networking group, senior center) are suggested. Two categories were identified under the caregiving content: caregiving knowledge and skills, and community resources. Fourteen subcategories under caregiving knowledge and skills (e.g., care assessment) and six subcategories under community resources (e.g., medical emergency call) were mentioned. With this useful information, we could further refine the self-care curriculum to be more linguistically, culturally and occupationally sensitive for Chinese immigrant caregivers. Empowerment approach for enhancing the ability to caregiving and self-care should be emphasized in content design for immigrant caregivers. The co-design approach is crucial for planning of the program and intervention curriculum to improve understanding of the users’ needs and better cater them.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brazilian Scale for the Assessment of Self-Care Behaviors with Arteriovenous Fistula in Hemodialysis. Cross-sectional validation study, followed the recommendation provided by Sousa and Rojjanasrirat. Content validity, explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses used to check validity and Cronbach’s alpha was the reliability measure. Three hundred hemodialysis patients with arteriovenous fistula were included in the study. The expert committee assessed the content validity. Exploratory factor analysis confirmed the same two-factor structure found for the original scale, explaining 60.10% of the variance. Such solution was checked by confirmatory factor analysis with Cronbach’s alpha equal to 0.920, 0.810, and 0.884 for the overall scale, the self-care in management of signs and symptoms and the self-care in prevention of complications subscales respectively. The scale has good psychometric properties to assess self-care behaviors and can be used with Brazilian patients on hemodialysis with arteriovenous fistula.
