Prediction of Muffler Transmission Loss and Shell Noise by a Coupled Structure-Acoustic Model

Based on the vibration-acoustic analysis software VA One, a fully coupled structural-acoustic muffler FE model and a muffler cavity FE model are built. Then, a comparison is drawn between transmission loss of the coupled FE model and the cavity FE model, which demonstrates that the structure vibration has a big influence on the prediction of acoustic performance of muffler. Besides, radiated noise by muffler is calculated in this paper, which can provide a reference for the designanalysis and improvement of a muffler.

Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) emanating from surface and underwater marine platforms has become a significant concern for all the Nations in view of the global requirement to minimise the increasing adverse impact on marine mammals and fishes and maintain ecological balance in the ‘Silent’ ocean environment. Ambient noise level in the sea, in 10 to 300 Hz frequency band, has increased by 20 to 30 dB due to shipping (Wittekind, 2009). Marine propeller (in non- cavitating and cavitating regime) is a potential contributor to the ships noise and a lot of scientific research has been undertaken and considerable progress has been achieved in estimating the hydro-acoustic performance of marine propellers. In light of this, the scope of this paper is to review and critically examine the various methods used for estimating the hydro-acoustic performance of marine propellers, particularly in the non-cavitating regime, over the past many years. This review paper brings out the details, applicability, merits and demerits of various methods, extrapolation laws to obtain full scale results, scientific conclusion of all the know-how on this subject and the scope of further research as perceived by the authors. This paper also presents a numerical methodology to estimate the noise radiated by a DTMB 4119 model propeller in the non-cavitating regime in open water condition. The hydrodynamic analysis of the propeller was performed using commercial CFD software STARCCM+, closure was achieved using standard k-ε turbulence model and hydro-acoustic predictions have been performed using FWH acoustic analogy. The results compare very well with the published literature.

The effects of leakage and blockage on the acoustic performance of particle filters have been examined by using one-dimensional acoustic analysis and experimental methods. First, the transfer matrix of a filter system connected to inlet and outlet pipes with conical sections is measured using a two-load method. Then, the transfer matrix of a particle filter only is extracted from the experiments by applying inverse matrices of the conical sections. In the analytical approaches, the one-dimensional acoustic model for the leakage between the filter and the housing is developed. The predicted transmission loss shows a good agreement with the experimental results. Compared to the baseline, the leakage between the filter and housing increases transmission loss at a certain frequency and its harmonics. In addition, the transmission loss for the system with a partially blocked filter is measured. The blockage of the filter also increases the transmission loss at higher frequencies. For the simplicity of experiments to identify the leakage and blockage, the reflection coefficients at the inlet of the filter system have been measured using two different downstream conditions: open pipe and highly absorptive terminations. The experiments show that with highly absorptive terminations, it is easier to see the difference between the baseline and the defects.

Recently, sandwich structures have been widely used in different fields because of their good mechanical properties, but these structures are weak in acoustic performance. In this paper, by combining pyramidal truss core sandwich structure with frame, a new structure is proposed with both good mechanical properties and excellent acoustic performance at low frequency. An analytical model of the pyramidal truss core sandwich structure with frame is developed to investigate the sound transmission loss (STL) performance. Finite element method (FEM) is also used to investigate the STL performance at low frequency. The effects of the incident wave angle and the geometrical parameters on the STL of the structure are discussed.

Vacuum hot bulge forming (VHBF) is becoming an increasingly important manufacturing process for titanium alloy cylindrical workpiece in the aerospace industries. Finite element simulation is an essential tool for the specification of process parameters. In this paper, a two-dimensional nonlinear thermo-mechanical couple FE model was established. Numerical simulation of vacuum hot bulge forming of titanium alloy cylindrical workpiece was carried out using FE analysis software MSC.Marc. The effects of process parameter on vacuum hot bulge forming of BT20 titanium alloy cylindrical workpiece was analyzed by numerical simulation. The proposed an optimized vacuum hot bulge forming process parameters and die size. And the corresponding experiments were carried out. The simulated results agreed well with the experimental results.

During the last couple of years, there has been an increasing focus on the vibro-acoustic performance of built environments due to increasing requirements in building codes regarding impact and airborne sound transmission. Hence, development of efficient and accurate methods for prediction of sound in such buildings is important. In the low-frequency range, prediction of sound and vibration in building structures may be achieved by finite-element analysis (FEA). The aim of this paper is to compare the two commercial codes ABAQUS and ANSYS for FEA of an acoustic-structural coupling in a timber, lightweight panel structure. For this purpose, modal analyses are carried out employing a fully coupled model of sound waves within an acoustic medium and vibrations in the structural part. The study concerns the frequency range 50–250 Hz.

The transmission loss (TL) performance of spherical chambers having single inlet and multiple outlet is obtained analytically through modal expansion of acoustic field inside the spherical cavity in terms of the spherical Bessel functions and Legendre polynomials. The uniform piston driven model based upon the impedance [Z] matrix is used to characterize the multi-port spherical chamber. It is shown analytically that the [Z] parameters are independent of the azimuthal angle (φ) due to the axisymmetric shape of the sphere; rather, they depend only upon the polar angle (θ) and radius of the chamber R0. Thus, the effects of relative polar angular location of the ports and number of outlet ports are investigated. The analytical results are shown to be in good agreement with the 3D FEA results, thereby validating the procedure suggested in this work.

A finite element approach is proposed for the acoustic analysis of automotive silencers including a perforated duct with uniform axial mean flow and an outer chamber with heterogeneous absorbent material. This material can be characterized by means of its equivalent acoustic properties, considered coordinate-dependent via the introduction of a heterogeneous bulk density, and the corresponding material airflow resistivity variations. An approach has been implemented to solve the pressure wave equation for a nonmoving heterogeneous medium, associated with the problem of sound propagation in the outer chamber. On the other hand, the governing equation in the central duct has been solved in terms of the acoustic velocity potential considering the presence of a moving medium. The coupling between both regions and the corresponding acoustic fields has been carried out by means of a perforated duct and its acoustic impedance, adapted here to include absorbent material heterogeneities and mean flow effects simultaneously. It has been found that bulk density heterogeneities have a considerable influence on the silencer transmission loss.

A new type of deep subwavelength acoustic metamaterial (AMM) absorber with 100% ventilation is presented in this study. The proposed ventilation absorber consists of coiled-up half-wave resonators (HWRs) and quarter-wave resonators (QWRs). First, the sound absorption and sound transmission performances for absorbers were analyzed considering the thermal viscosity dissipation. Then, the prototype with ten HWRs and three QWRs composed of acrylic plates was manufactured based on the theoretical model. The acoustic performance of the absorber was tested in an air-filled acoustic impedance tube to determine the sound absorption and transmission loss performances. Good agreement was found between the measured and theoretically predicted results. The experimental results show that the proposed ventilation AMM absorber is able to achieve sound absorption in a range between 330 Hz and 460 Hz with a thickness of only 32 mm (about 3% of the wavelength in the air). Furthermore, the sound transmission loss can achieve 17 dB from 330 Hz to 460 Hz. The main advantage of the proposed absorber is that it can be completely ventilated in duct noise control.
