The rice husk powder was modified by polymer (lactic acid) (PLA) and Maleic anhydride (coupling agent, MAPP). Composite material was prepared in the way of melt blending. The mechanical properties, water absorbability of rice husk/polymer (lactic acid) (PLA) composites, and the relations between these properties and microscopic characteristics were investigated. The result showed that, with the increasing content of rice husk power, the maximum bearable tension and tensile strength increased; Water absorbability after 2 hours’ immersion hadn't significant change, but after 24 hours’ immersion, the water absorbing capacity had obvious addition. The study also showed that coupling agent could significantly reduce the water absorbability of composite materials; The use of scanning electron microscope (SEM) found that the interface became smoother, the adhesion between PLA and rice husk powder became closer when add the coupling agent to the rice husk powder, it also could well explain the differences between water absorbability and mechanical properties.

To apply nano-structured materials in micro/nano system, understanding of the mechanical properties of nano-structured materials is required. In order to perform the mechanical test of nano-structured materials, the mechanical testing system was installed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The nano-manipulator was set up in the SEM, and the force sensor formed as a cantilever was mounted on the nano-manipulator. Then, the force sensor can be controlled by using the nano-manipulator. The nano-structured materials were dispersed on the transmission electron microscope (TEM) grid, and both end of the nano-structured materials were welded on the TEM grid and the tip of force sensor by exposing E-beam of the SEM. The tensile tests for carbon nanotubes, ZnO nanorods and ZnS nanowires were carried out in the SEM, respectively. The load response during the mechanical test was obtained by force sensor. The dimension of nano-structured materials was obtained by determining the configuration measured from the TEM. And, strain-stress curve was obtained after mechanical test. The elastic modulus of the nano-structured materials after the tensile tests were calculated and compared. The elastic modulus for multi-walled carbon nanotubes, ZnO nanorod and ZnS nanowire were ~0.98 TPa, ~59 and ~39 GPa, respectively.

Effect of the vinyl acetate - ethylene copolymer emulsion (VAE emulsion), styrene-acrylic emulsion and paraffin emulsion were studied on waterproof properties and mechanical properties of calcined gypsum from flue gas desulfurization (FGD). The results showed that waterproof properties of samples which mixed paraffin emulsion were most excellent, but mixing paraffin emulsion caused the negative effect to the mechanics properties of samples. Adding appropriate content of VAE emulsion was advantageous to waterproof properties and mechanical properties of samples. Scanning electron microscope was used to observe the microstructure of samples, and the mechanism of waterproof emulsion was discussed.

The effect of the neodymium content on mechanical properties of the electro-brush plated nanoAl2O3/Ni composite coating was investigated in this paper. The microstructure and phase structure were studied with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The hardness and abrasion properties of several coatings with different neodymium content were studied by nanoindentation test and friction / wear experiment. Results show that the coatings are much finer and more compact when the neodymium was added, and the hardness and abrasion property of the coatings with neodymium were improved obviously. Besides, the small cracks conduced by the upgrowth stress in the coatings were ameliorated when the rare earth neodymium was added. The improvement mechanism was further discussed.

We investigate the performance of graphene oxide (GO) in improving mechanical properties of cement composites. A polycarboxylate superplasticizer was used to improve the dispersion of GO flakes in the cement. The mechanical strength of graphene-cement nanocomposites containing 0.1–2 wt% GO and 0.5 wt% superplasticizer was measured and compared with that of cement prepared without GO. We found that the tensile strength of the cement mortar increased with GO content, reaching 1.5%, a 48% increase in tensile strength. Ultra high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) used to observe the fracture surface of samples containing 1.5 wt% GO indicated that the nano-GO flakes were well dispersed in the matrix, and no aggregates were observed. FE-SEM observation also revealed good bonding between the GO surfaces and the surrounding cement matrix. In addition, XRD diffraction data showed growth of the calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) gels in GO cement mortar compared with the normal cement mortar.

At present, the research on the high temperature degradation of concrete usually focuses on only the degradation of concrete itself without considering the effect of the plastering layer. It is necessary to take into account the influence of the plastering layer on the high temperature degradation of concrete. With an increase in the water/cement ratio, the explosion of concrete disappeared. Although increasing the water/cement ratio can alleviate the cracking of concrete due to lower pressure, it leads to a decrease in the mechanical properties of concrete after heating. It is proved that besides the water/cement ratio, the apparent phenomena and mechanical properties of concrete at high temperature can be affected by the plastering layer. The plastering layer can relieve the high temperature cracking of concrete, and even inhibit the high temperature explosion of concrete with 0.30 water/cement ratio. By means of an XRD test, scanning electron microscope test and thermogravimetric analysis, it is found that the plastering layer can promote the rehydration of unhydrated cement particles of 0.30 water/cement ratio concrete at high temperature and then promote the mechanical properties of concrete at 400 °C. However, the plastering layer accelerated the thermal decomposition of C-S-H gel of concrete with a water/cement ratio of 0.40 at high temperature, and finally accelerate the decline of mechanical property of concrete. To conclude, the low water/cement ratio and plastering layer can delay the deterioration of concrete at high temperature.

The Effect of Calcination Temperature on the Characteristics of Forsterite-Carbon Composites Synthesized in Argon Gas Medium. Forsterite-carbon composite is one of the material modifications of forsterite, which potentially has a good heat insulation property. Carbon in composites can fill point defects in forsterite crystals. Rice husk charcoal, as gasification residues, contains high amorphous SiO2 and carbon. This study aims to determine the effect of temperature on the calcination of a mixture of rice husk charcoal and magnesium carbonate under an inert gas (argon gas) on the characteristics of the forsterite-carbon composite produced. The experimental research performed includes the preparation of gasified rice husk charcoal and the synthesis of the carbon-forsterite composite. The synthesis process of the carbon-forsterite composites was carried out by mixing rice husk charcoal with potassium carbonate at a mole ratio of magnesium to silicon of 2 : 1. The mixture was then calcined with varying temperatures (700, 800, 900, and 1000 °C). Furthermore, the synthesized sample was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The FTIR and XRD analysis show that the forsterites began to form at a calcination temperature of 800 °C and perfectly formed at a temperature of 1000 °C; therefore, the composite formed at 1000 °C is possible as forsterite-carbon, in which the contained elements were indicated by SEM-EDS.

Poly(vinyl chloride) photodecomposition films that contains melamine Schiff base (0.5% by weight) as photostabilizers upon preservation with an ultraviolet light (UV) was investigated. The photodecomposition rate constant was reduced significantly in existence of melamine Schiff base compared to PVC (blank). The Schiff base 1 was found to most effective additive in PVC photostabilization films. Photodecomposition rate content for PVC films containing Schiff base 1 was found to be 5 × 10-3 sec-1 compared to 8.7 × 10-3 sec-1 for blank film. Ultraviolet radiation aging behaviors of PVC films were studied through leaching test by measuring the degree of migration. The surface morphology of PVC films was inspected by scanning electron microscope.
