Aluminium alloy(A 356) has improved properties such as tension and elongation butit is decreased in hardness property compared to ceramics and therefore silicon carbideparticle (SiCp) is added with aluminium alloy to increase its hardness. Silicon Carbideparticle is abrasive and hence having poor interfacial bonding between ceramics andaluminium, so that the surface of the ceramics is coated with Multi Wall Carbon Nano Tubes(MWCNT). In this paper 10% of SiCp is taken for the experiment and coated with 1.5%, 2%,2.5% of MWCNT and this coated SiCp mixed with molten A 356 using stir casting method. The prepared castings were mechanically tested using Universal Testing Machine (UTM),Vickers hardness Testing Machine, Impact Testing Machine and Optical Microscope andtheir mechanical properties and morphological characteristics were studied

Mechanical properties (impact, hardness and tensile strength) characterization of samples containing homogenous mixtures of Al 6063 matrix and varying amount of silver nanoparticles mixed with calcium carbonate at 2, 4, 6% weight fractions, respectively, produced by method of stir casting were carried out. Measurement of impact energy, hardness and tensile strength of the produced samples at 24℃ (ambient) temperature was done by Charpy impact, Brinell hardness and universal tensile testing machine in accordance to ASTM E23, E384 and E8/E8M-13M, respectively. The magnitude of impact and hardness increased evidently with increase in percentage weight fraction of the AgNPs. The refined samples were examined under an optical microscope. The fracture surfaces of the impact test samples were further examined by scanning electron microscopy. There is an increase in tensile strength, elongation and modulus of elasticity of Al-AgNP composites compared to as-cast aluminium alloy. The use of stir-casting technique influences the homogeneity and microstructure of the composites positively. It is concluded that Al-silver nanocomposites possess better qualities in hardness and strength and can replace conventional aluminium alloy in terms of performance and longer life in industrial application.

Grain growth of Aluminium alloys at high temperature reduces their strength significantly. Therefore it is essential to control the grain growth by suitable techniques. The effect of Cr on refining the grain structure of Al alloys is investigated in the present work. Cr is added into Al-Si-Mg alloy by stir casting techniques. Subsequently the alloys were subjected to annealing at 500oC for 1 hour to study the grain growth behavior of these alloys. An optical microscope is used to analyze the grain size and microstructure. The mechanical properties of these alloys were studied using a universal testing machine. The Cr additions were varied between 0.5 to 4 weight percent. The Cr addition had shown a significant effect in refining the grain size of Al-Si-Mg alloys. The average grain diameter after annealing was found to be about 151 μm in unalloyed samples while, the 2 wt % Cr added samples showed about 92 μm. The second phase particles, Al7Cr found precipitated along the grain boundaries apart from Al2Si and Mg2Si. However Cr additions more than 2% does not show significant role in refining the grain size. Cr also improved the mechanical properties such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and fracture toughness moderately.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of the four spring steels with different Si content treated by Q-I-Q-T process were studied by metallographic microscope, MTS, impact testing machine and X-ray stress analyzer. The results show that the tensile strength and yield strength is first increased and then decreased with the increase of Si content, the volume fraction of retained austenite and elongation are fist decreased and then increased when the Si content is less than 2.1%, and the microstructure become finer and homogeneous. When Si content reaches 2.1%, the comprehensive properties of 60Si2CrVA spring steel is the best.

This paper aims to investigate the mechanical (tensile, hardness, impact, elongation), microstructure and wear behaviours of aluminium alloy reinforced with mussel shell powder (MSP) at different weight percentages (0 wt. % to 15 wt. %) at 3 wt. % interval. The mussel shell powder was characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The matrix and the composites’ morphology were studied using a scanning electron microscope attached with energy dispersive spectroscopy for the distribution of mussel shell powder particles within the matrix. The wear behaviour of the alloy and composites produced at various reinforcements were carried out using a Taber abrasion wear-testing machine. The XRF showed the compositions of MSP to contain calcium oxide (95.70 %), silica (0.83 %) and others. Mechanical properties showed that tensile values increase with increases in MSP, hardness value increases from 6 wt. % to 15 wt. % of MSP. The impact energy decreased from 42.6 J at 3 wt. % to 22.6 J at 15 wt. %; the percentage elongation also decreased from 37.4 % at 3 wt. % to 20.5 % at 15 wt. % MSP, respectively. The bending stress results increase with increases in the percentage of reinforcement. The morphologies revealed that uniform distribution of MSP within the matrix resulted to improvement in mechanical properties. The wear resistance of the composites increases with increase in the applied load and decreases with increases in the weight percentage of MSP and can be used in the production of brake pads and insulators in the automobile industry.

A 356 alloy reinforced with insitu V2O5 particles by using stir casting technique. The composites were produced by the addition of oxide particles in different weight percentage. The effect of oxide powder addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of produced composites were investigated. The effect of heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated by optical microscope, Microhardness tester and tension test. A significant improvement in hardness and tensile strength was revealed in the produced composite as compared to the base alloy. With the addition of oxide particles, the shape and size of eutectic Si changed which in turn affects the properties. It was observed that 2h solutionizing followed by the artificial aging was sufficient to make the structure homogenize and to produce the hardening precipitates. The improvement in the mechanical properties has been observed due to the age hardening precipitates in addition with refinement of insitu V2O5 particles.

The influence of Al-10RE addition, holding time and holding temperature on the microstructures and mechanical properties of ZL203 aluminum alloy has been studied respectively through using the optical microscope and the universal mechanical testing machine. The experimental results lead to the following conclusions. When Al-10RE addition is 1.0%-1.5%, the holding time is 15 minutes and the holding temperature is 730°C-750°C, the microstructure of Zl203 is perfect. With the increase of Al-10RE addition, the mechanical properties including tensile strength, elongation rate and hardness gradually increase. When the Al-10RE addition is 1.0%-1.5%, the mechanical properties reaches maximum. When the Al-10RE addition is above 1.5%, the mechanical properties decrease with the increase of Al-10RE addition.

The effect of cooling rate on the microstructural and mechanical properties of Sn-0.3Ag-0.7Cu-0.05Ni lead-free solder alloy was studied. The microstructure of specimens was characterized by using an optical microscope (OM) and an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The mechanical properties were performed by using a universal testing machine (UTM). The results showed that the cooling rate of water-cooled specimens was about 2.37 °C/s and the cooling rate of mold-cooled specimens was about 0.05 °C/s. To compare the different cooling rates, it was found that the grain size of water-cooled specimens was finer than that of the mold-cooled specimens, this resulted in an increment of mechanical properties of solder alloy. A higher tensile strength (33.10 MPa) and a higher elongation (34%) were observed when water-cooled and mold-cooled systems were used, respectively. The microstructure of Sn-0.3Ag-0.7Cu-0.05Ni lead-free solder alloy solidified by both cooling systems exhibited three phases: β-Sn, Ag3Sn and (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 IMCs.

This paper described systematically the changes in microstructure and mechanical properties of Inconel 783 alloy after a considerably long time (equivalently 55,000 h, about 76.4 months) of thermal exposure. Based on the Inconel 783 alloy bolts of an intermediate pressure main stop valve used in a 1000 MW ultra-supercritical unit, the evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties were studied after 700 °C aging temperature with different aging times (1000 h, 3000 h and 20,000 h, corresponding to about 1.4 months, 4.2 months and 27.8 months, respectively), using an optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a universal tensile testing machine and impact testing machine. The results indicated that the bolts aged for 1000 h in two temperatures, showing the second needle β phase, of which the quantity and size obviously increased with aging time. Meanwhile, the characteristics in quantity and shape of the primary β phase changed obviously with the aging time, which transformed to strip the Ni5Al3 and Laves-Nb-rich brittle phase in the matrix after aging for 20,000 h. The size of the γ’ phase grew bigger with aging time, and orientation distributions have been observed obviously at 3000 h aging in 700 °C. Compared with the 650 °C aging temperature, the coarsening of γ’ precipitates and second needle β, the orientation distributions of γ’ were more obvious at the 700 °C aging temperature with aging time, which resulted in the rapid decline in yield strength and tensile strength and obvious increase in the brittleness for Inconel 783 alloy bolts.

The effect of rare earth metal erbium (Er) modification on the microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminium alloys (A380) were investigated using Optical Microscope (OM), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) attached with Electron Dispersive Scanning (EDS), Vicker’s hardness test and Ultimate Tensile Test (UTS). The results show that the addition of Er reduces the size of the silicon particle and improve mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy. In addition, by adding 0.1 wt. % of Er, the mean area (μm2) and aspect ratio value decreased. The coarse plate like existed in the unmodified alloy transformed into fine particle and short rod. The mechanical properties were investigated by using tensile test and Vicker’s hardness test. The ultimate tensile strength test shows that the tensile and the elongation increased 1.32 % and 9.1 % with 0.1 wt. % Er content of the aluminium alloys, respectively. The hardness improved from the addition of 0.1% Er aluminium A380 alloy.
