Reverse engineering has become the one of the most relevant concepts in modern design doctrines. Advances in technology demand shorter lead time in the overall product development stage, especially in the automobile sector. Hence as a study in reverse engineering, the author has reverse engineered a twin tube shock absorber. The process involved the obtaining of subassemblies of the damper mechanism to generate a 3D CAD model of the damper in PTC CREO 2.0. The model was used to conduct static structural and CFD analysis of the same using ANSYS 15.0 Workbench. The data obtained was used as the datum for the design modifications and performance enhancement of the part. It was seen that the design of the piston valve was optimum hence modifications to the base valve were done. Following the generation of the datum, similar analyses were conducted on the modified assemblies. The results were compared to the datum for the selection of the most appropriate design. Four designs are analyzed and compared with the datum and the set with four orifices in the valve disk was found to be optimum.

The design and performance of the ATLAS Inner Detector (ID) trigger algorithms running online on the High Level Trigger (HLT) processor farm for 13 TeV LHC collision data with high pileup are discussed. The HLT ID tracking is a vital component in all physics signatures in the ATLAS trigger for the precise selection of the rare or interesting events necessary for physics analysis without overwhelming the offline data storage in terms of both size and rate. To cope with the high interaction rates expected in the 13 TeV LHC collisions, the ID trigger was redesigned during the 2013-15 long shutdown. The performance of the ID trigger in Run 2 data from 13 TeV LHC collisions has been excellent and exceeded expectations, even at the very high interaction multiplicities observed at the end of data-taking in 2017. The detailed efficiencies and resolutions of the ID trigger in a wide range of physics signatures are presented for the Run 2 data. The superb performance of the ID trigger algorithms in these extreme pileup conditions demonstrates how the ID tracking continues to lie at the heart of the trigger performance to enable the ATLAS physics program, and will continue to do so in the future.

The Medical Research Council's fast interval processor (FIP) has been adapted for metaphase finding and selection. This article summarizes recent improvements to the hardware, and describes the selection of image features. The system uses a highly simplified but effective clustering procedure to reduce computation time, and incorporates a ranking algorithm based on computed cluster features so that high-quality metaphases can be preferentially selected. Experimental results indicate that the system can detect high-quality metaphases rapidly in "rich" material and a high proportion of the available metaphases in "sparse" material. It can handle a wide range of material with good repeatability of performance.

Selection of materials is pivotal for the success of engineering design applications. Their proper selection is an exhaustive task as a result of the presence of a wide range of material alternatives and performance attributes. Thus, this research proposes an integrated multi-criteria decision-making method for the sake of evaluating a set of material alternatives. The material alternatives are assessed with regards to their surface hardness, core hardness, surface fatigue limit, bending fatigue limit, ultimate tensile strength, and cost. The weights of attributes are obtained based on criteria importance through inter-criteria correlation (CRITIC) algorithm. This research then employs six types of multi-criteria decision-making algorithms to rank the material alternatives. Average ranking algorithm is then applied to generate a full consensus prioritization of material alternatives. A sensitivity analysis is also carried out to determine the most robust and sensitive multi-criteria decision-making algorithm.

The construction and selection of a suitable bijective function, that is, substitution, is now becoming an important applied task, particularly for building block encryption systems. Many articles have suggested using different approaches to determining the quality of substitution, but most of them are highly computationally complex. The solution of this problem will significantly expand the range of methods for constructing and analyzing scheme in information protection systems. The purpose of research is to find easily measurable characteristics of substitutions, allowing to evaluate their quality, and also measures of the proximity of a particular substitutions to a random one, or its distance from it. For this purpose, several characteristics were proposed in this work: difference and polynomial, and their mathematical expectation was found, as well as variance for the difference characteristic. This allows us to make a conclusion about its quality by comparing the result of calculating the characteristic for a particular substitution with the calculated mathematical expectation. From a computational point of view, the thesises of the article are of exceptional interest due to the simplicity of the algorithm for quantifying the quality of bijective function substitutions. By its nature, the operation of calculating the difference characteristic carries out a simple summation of integer terms in a fixed and small range. Such an operation, both in the modern and in the prospective element base, is embedded in the logic of a wide range of functional elements, especially when implementing computational actions in the optical range, or on other carriers related to the field of nanotechnology.

Angiogenesis plays an important function in tumor proliferation, one of the main angiogenic promoters being the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) which activates specific receptors, particularly VEGFR-2. Thus, VEGFR-2 has become an essential therapeutic target in the development of new antitumor drugs. 1,2,4-triazoles show a wide range of biological activities, including antitumor effect, which was documented by numerous reports. In the current study the selection of 5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole structure (1H-3-styryl-5-benzylidenehydrazino-carbonyl-methylsulfanil-1,2,4-triazole, Tz3a.7) was conducted based on molecular docking that emphasized it as suitable ligand for VEGFR-2 and EGFR1 receptors. Compound Tz3a.7 was synthesized and physicochemically and biologically evaluated thus revealing a moderate antiproliferative activity against breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231.

Performance data from a pilot-plant employing the four-stage aerated submerged fixed film (ASFF) process treating domestic wastewater were analyzed to examine the organic removal rates. The process has shown high BOD removal efficiencies (> 90%) over a wide range of hydraulic loading rates (0.04 to 0.68 m3/m2·d). It could also cope with high hydraulic and organic loadings with minimal loss in efficiency due to the large amount of immobilized biomass attained. The organic (BOD and COD) removal rate was influenced by the hydraulic loadings applied, but organic removal rates of up to 104 kg BOD/ m2·d were obtained at a hydraulic loading rate of 0.68 m3/m2·d. A Semi-empirical model for the bio-oxidation of organics in the ASFF process has been formulated and rate constants were calculated based on statistical analysis of pilot-plant data. The relationships obtained are very useful for analyzing the design and performance of the ASFF process and a variety of attached growth processes.

BACKGROUND To lower barriers to developmental screening, we designed Baby CROINC (CROwd INtelligence Curation), a digital platform to help parents track and assess their children’s development through crowd wisdom. OBJECTIVE To understand users’ experiences using Baby CROINC in relation to users’ technological competence and attitudes, while considering the influence of their children’s presented developmental evaluations and parents’ actual use of the system. METHODS Mothers of 260 children (M age= 17.6 months, SD=13.7) used Baby CROINC for two weeks. They entered developmental milestones on their children’s developmental diary timeline and received statistical developmental percentile reports. Mothers then completed Usability and Technology Profile Questionnaires. RESULTS Mothers’ experiences of the Baby CROINC system usability were associated with their attitudes toward solving technological problems, mediated by frequency of engagement in Internet activities. Mothers with a proactive approach toward solving technology problems, engage in a wide range of Internet activities, and/or view the Internet as integral to their lives had a better experience with Baby CROINC than mothers who did not. The system’s perceived usability was not associated with the crowd-based child developmental percentiles or quantity of mothers’ usage of the system. CONCLUSIONS Parent’s user experiences correlate with their technology competence and problem solving attitude but is not correlated with their child’s developmental status. Developmental screening platforms need to solve the tension between requiring active engagement and encouraging proactive parenting.

This paper presents a computer simulation showing how the gear contact ratio affects the dynamic load on a spur gear transmission. The contact ratio can be affected by the tooth addendum, the pressure angle, the tooth size (diametral pitch), and the center distance. The analysis presented in this paper was performed by using the NASA gear dynamics code DANST. In the analysis, the contact ratio was varied over the range 1.20 to 2.40 by changing the length of the tooth addendum. In order to simplify the analysis, other parameters related to contact ratio were held constant. The contact ratio was found to have a significant influence on gear dynamics. Over a wide range of operating speeds, a contact ratio close to 2.0 minimized dynamic load. For low-contact-ratio gears (contact ratio less than two), increasing the contact ratio reduced gear dynamic load. For high-contact-ratio gears (contact ratio equal to or greater than 2.0), the selection of contact ratio should take into consideration the intended operating speeds. In general, high-contact-ratio gears minimized dynamic load better than low-contact-ratio gears.
