Effects of Spinning on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of A356 Alloy

The tube-shaped parts of A356 alloy were deformed from 0% to 83% by spinning process. The microstructure and mechanical properties of A356 alloy were discussed. The results showed that as the wall thickness reduction increases, the dendrite cells of cast alloy are lengthened gradually and the average Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS) is reduced from 37.2μm to 23μm and eutectic silicon particles are distributed orderly along the spinning direction. The coarse acicular β-Al5FeSi is broken into many sections, and its length is reduced from 37.5μm to 12.5μm in the cross-section. The tensile strength and elongation exhibit a strong dependence upon the variation in wall thickness, with a parabolic relationship. The tensile fractured surface of parts with deformation ratio above 35% exhibits many equiaxial dimples, with intergranular ductile fracture mode.

Effects of the holding time and the stirring time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of A356 alloy modified by Sc are researched. According to the test results, most of the eutectic silicon phases have changed to the shape of creeping point, dispersed in the grain boundary of α (Al) phase while stirring 1 minute, in which case both the tensile strength and elongation reach the highest, resulting in the best modification effect. The results also indicate that microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy reach are the best modification effect when the melt is held 15 minute. It can be known that the optimal stirring time is 1 minute and the optimal holding time is 15 minute in the experiment condition of the work.

A356 is a heat treatable cast alloy which has been widely applied in aviation and automobile industries. In this paper a Sb modified A356 alloy cast with permanent mold has been investigated in order to improve its mechanical properties by changing the needle morphology of the eutectic silicon. The results show that a small amount of Sb addition can contribute refined eutectic silicon morphology and enhance the mechanical properties, especially elongation of the A356 cast alloy poured in permanent molds. The optimal addition of Sb is 0.2 wt.%.

The effects of addition of different amounts of rare earth ytterbium (Yb) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the casting ADC12 alloy were investigated by mechanical properties testing and microstructure observation. The results indicate that Yb modification had a big influence on the microstructure and properties of the as-cast alloy. The optimum level of Yb content was 0.8 wt %. The coarse dendritic primary α-Al phases were fully refined, leading to the decreasing of the secondary dendrite arm spacing. The morphology of eutectic silicon phases changed from acicular into short rod-like and even granular. There was a structural transformation of β-Fe phases from massive to small rod-shaped morphology. Additionally, the tensile strength, elongation, and microhardness were 267.9 MPa, 4.2%, and 107.3 HV, respectively, increases of 55.4, 121.1, and 41.4%, respectively, compared with the matrix alloy. Fractographic examinations reveal that mainly ductile fracture for Yb addition of 0.8 wt %. The fracture appearances matched the tendency of the tensile properties. Furthermore, the addition of Yb can generate a rare earth phase consisting of the three elements of Al, Si, Yb, with some small iron-rich phases attached around the rare earth phase.

In this paper, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-cast and heat treatment of Mg-Zn-Nd alloy was investigated. The alloy was manufactured by a conventional casting method, and then subjected to a heat treatment. The results showed that the microstructure of as-cast alloy was comprised of α-Mg matrix and Mg12Nd phase. With increase of Nd content, the grain size gradually decreased from 25.38 μm to 9.82 μm. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation at room temperature of the Mg94Zn2Nd4 alloy can be reached to 219.63 MPa and 5.31%. After heat treatment, part of the second phase dissolved into the magnesium matrix and the grain size became a little larger than that of the as-cast. The ultimate tensile strength was declined by about 2.5%, and the elongation was increased to 5.47%.

Thixoforming is a type of semisolid metal (SSM) processing for forming alloys in the semisolid state to near net-shaped products. In the present study, the effect of a thixoforming process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-6Si-3Cu aluminium alloy was investigated. Melt was poured on a cooling slope at 630oC and the samples were obtained through permanent mold casting. They were thixoformed using a hydraulic press after holding at 571oC for 5min to yield a microstructure predominantly composed of α-Al globules and inter-globular Si particles. As-cast and thixoformed samples were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) as well as hardness measurements and tensile tests. The results indicate that the mechanical properties of thixoformed alloy have improved as compared to permanent mold cast alloy. The ultimate tensile strength of as-cast sample was 210 ± 3.5 MPa and increased to 241 ±3.1 MPa in the thixoformed sample while the yield strength of as-cast alloy was 140 ±4.5 MPa and increased to 176±3.3 MPa in the thixoformed sample. The thixoformed alloy also showed an improvement in elongation to fracture as it increased from 2% in as-cast sample to 3.2% in thixoformed alloy. The fracture of as-cast sample showed a cleavage fracture, whereas in the thixoformed alloy, a combination of dimple and cleavage was observed.

Sr added ignition-proof AZ91D-0.3Be magnesium alloy was prepared. The influence of Sr content on microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy was studied. Results show that the microstructure of ignition-proof AZ91D-0.3Be magnesium alloy is refined by a small amount of Sr addition. It is due to that the enrichment of a few Sr atoms in solid liquid interface in the process of magnesium alloy solidification inhibits grain growth and accelerates more nucleation. However, with increasing of Sr addition the microstructure is coarsened. By 0.01% Sr addition the tensile strength of as-cast experimental alloy is increased by about 25% and that of both the solid-solution and aged alloy is increased by about 40%. The elongation of as-cast alloy is increased by about 20% and that of solid-solution alloy increased by about 30%.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of cast and cold-rolled equitomic CoCrFeCuNi alloy in which Mn was substituted by Cu from Cantor alloy was studied. The separation into two solid solutions (Cr-Co-Fe rich and Cu-rich phases) were observed in CoCrFeCuNi. Coarsening and widening of interdendritic Cu-rich phase after homogenization was observed after homogenization, suggesting Cu-rich phase is thermodynamically stable. The compressive stress-strain curves of homogenized cast CoCrFeCuNi alloy exhibited the reasonably high strength and excellent deformability for the cast alloy. The yield strength increased up to 960MPa after cold rolling from 265MPa of the homogenized cast alloy. The significant increase of yield strength is thought to be associated with the alignment of Cu-rich second phase in addition to cold work dislocation storage after cold rolling.

Effects of AlN addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-Al-Zn magnesium alloy were investigated using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and tensile testing. Five different samples were made with different amounts of AlN(0wt%, 0.12wt%, 0.30wt%, 0.48wt%, 0. 60wt%). The results show that the phases of as-cast alloy are composed of α-Mg,β-Mg17Al12. The addition of AlN suppressed the precipitation of the β-phase. And, with the increase of AlN content, the microstructure of β-phase was changed from the reticulum to fine grains. When AlN content was up to 0.48wt% in the alloy, the β-phase became most uniform distribution. After adding 0.3wt% AlN to Al-Mg-Zn alloy, the average alloy grain size reduced from 102μm to 35μm ,the tensile strength of alloy was the highest. The average tensile strength increased from 139MPa to 169.91MPa, the hardness increased from 77.7HB to 98.4HB, but the elongation changes indistinctively. However, when more amount of AlN was added, the average alloy grain size did not reduce sequentially and increased to 50μm by adding 0.6wt% AlN and the β-phase became a little more.
