People interact with surfaces in interior spaces, where a huge part of their life lasts. Many of these surfaces which surrounds the interior spaces are covering or coating materials in various textures and shapes. Materials used in interior surfaces are applied for various purposes. Protection, insulation or decoration can be considered as the main objective of these purposes. This study aims to research what kind of polymer based surface materials are used by interior designers and their reasons, frequency and area of use.  For this reason, the study is composed on a questionnaire. The questions are prepared by summarizing the polymer based material information obtained from the literature. The questionnaire participants are interior designers who are actively working in the field. With this group, a survey on selection of plastic materials has been made. Survey results are explained in the findings. The last chapter includes the conclusions and recommendations of the study. Keywords: Interior design, surface materials, plastics, polymers.

The interior design of the Islamic style in traditional cites included tangible and intangible influences, which organized the interior space according to the needs of the users and following the rules of Islam as a religion and cultural values. The quality of the interior space referred to the three points, the Rules, Elements, and Factors. However, the designers face difficulties in designing an interior space within the Islamic style. The studies in the Islamic interior design show the elements and components of the style, but few of these studies analyze in depth the quality of this style, especially, heritage houses. The research question of the current study is “What are the original components, rules, and factors that reflect the quality of the interior design of the Islamic style”. The aim of the study is to identify these components, rules, and factors as a guideline. The study used a mixed methodology; the qualitative mode used the in-depth interview with experts selected by purposeful sampling technique. While the quantitative mode used a checklist to observe the visual analysis of the interior space of the selected buildings. The selected building was chosen under special criteria depending on the heritage value and availability of information. The results showed that the quality of interior design reflected by the level of the details of the interior elements. However, 72% of the samples reflected the originality of the design. The quality of interior space in traditional and heritage houses in old Mosul City related to the details of the interior elements, such as materials.

Being in a hospital can be a stressful experience especially to the patients. The importance of design quality as a trigger to patients' satisfaction is becoming a topic of significant relevance as it also impacts the building operation. This study aims to determine the factors influencing the patients' satisfaction toward the interior design quality of inpatient units at public hospitals in Malaysia. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed among 483 inpatients from 5 Obstetrics and Gynaecology wards at public hospitals in the Klang Valley region. The Structural Equation Model (SEM) technique was applied to examine the causal relationship and to test the hypothesis of the patients' satisfaction toward the interior design quality. The results revealed that space planning (β = 0.265), lighting (β = 0.263), furniture (β = 0.243), and color (β = 0.138) have a significantly positive effect on patients' satisfaction toward the interior design quality. Whereas way-finding, safety, air quality and accessibility have no significant effect on the patients' satisfaction. This study concludes that certain qualities of interior design have great impact on patients' satisfaction. The findings proved that revamping the inpatient units' space planning can lead to significant patient experience improvements, while the aspect of accessibility is the least concern to the patients when they stay in the hospital. This study provides input to help designers, architects and hospital planners to evaluate their priorities in planning and designing better hospitals in the future.

This paper discusses the procedures used in teaching and learning Malay-Arabic translation courses for students of Bachelor of Arabic Studies with Education. This procedure is designed to facilitate the problem of students in structuring Arabic sentences based on the correct method of translation. Referring to the natural translation theory by Nida and Taber that prioritizes message delivery despite changes to the original text. This method was introduced as an alternative to students to construct Arabic sentences when translating according to the procedure that has been designed systematically for teaching and learning (T&L). This procedure is divided into five steps. The first step is understanding the text through intensive reading. Next, in the second step is finding the meaning of difficult phrases by using dictionary and discussion. The third step, which  is the main basis of the procedure is breaking the paragraphs of text into short sentences based on verb phrases. The fourth step is categorizing each sentence into the Arabic syntax structure for verb phrases. The fifth step is compiling and building a draft sentence which is translated directly through the translation text based on the steps above. The outcome of using this procedure increases the quality of Malay-Arabic translation and making it more understandable as students apply the structure of a correct Arabic sentence. This procedure will be used as an alternative for students in practising scientific translation in accordance with translation procedures.

Introduction. Environmental issues have different social and economic causes. The demand on natural raw materials has led to the disappearance of different animal species, yet human waste is one of the most important elements of global and local pollution. According to the results of the survey, 56% of those surveyed in Latvia have recognised that they prefer to choose those brands that are in favour of a clean environment. Sustainability and environmentally friendly farming are becoming more and more wide spread and topical, so the authors want to explore whether biomimicry used in a product development, increases the opportunities for more sustainable products. Aim and tasks. The main aim of this research is to create a framework for using biomimicry to manufacture new interior design products. The interior design project is needed to improve the quality of life in a society. The intention for this research is to help to develop the quality of long-term solutions for the society's daily life in accordance with nature. An interior design, which is created close to natural processes using all possibly available materials and products on the basis of biomimicry methods. Results. This article explores the ways in which biomimicry techniques, based on the Design Spiral and Janine Benyus Biomimicry Design Lens Principles of Life, can be combined with the design process of an interior design, thereby to create a framework with the help of which a designer works and creates a sustainable interior design. The interior design is a complex process, it is more than just the location of objects in a room or just a decorative supplement that covers the structure of a building, it is a necessary dimension that actually transforms a simple architectural space into a habitable place with a desired order, stability, and individuality. Conclusions. The article proposes a basis for the application of biomimicry in the development of an interior design product. The main difference between an interior design and the methodology of biomimicry is that in an interior design process the main question needs to be biologized from “What do I want to create?” to ”What do I want to achieve with my design?”. Also, in an interior design process there are phases to follow to create a design, like there are phases to create in biomimicry based products or processes. The most important points in the creation of the framework are the milestones at which the process of designing interior design should begin to be biologized. Changing the order of the Design Spiral phases and adjusting it to the designing points of an interior design, a system can be created in which all stages of the Design Spiral are connected with the interior design process.Milestones show the progress of a project where each milestone has the actions or activities to be performed, respectively.

Homestay is a place where each individual coming back after doing her/his routine and non-routine daily activities. A good residential interior design would enhance the quality of life of its inhabitants. The majority of Indonesian population, Jakarta in particular, has been aware of the importance of designing their home interior properly. However, home interior lighting, which is key to successful design of an interior space, is often under-emphasized. Research tried to collect lighting techniques often used in residential interiors. The result is a brief explanation and easy to apply regarding the types of information that can be used to illuminate any activity on the interior of the residence. Qualitative method by literature study is used in the making of this research.

This Chapter glances at the shifting landscape of disciplines and professions, with particular focus towards “Interior Design.” In spite of trends and increasing examples of the erosion and overlapping of disciplinary and professional boundaries, ironically or not, there remains the need for some sort of definition; in other words, there needs to be a body of knowledge and skills defined and practiced. This is especially relevant in a world of inter-, multi-, and trans-disciplinary work and comprehensive creative practices. After a very quick look at “Environmental Design” – or the design of environments and experiences – the paper spends a bit more time examining possible core aspects of Interior Design while promoting its expanded field. An articulated interior urbanism creates clear areas of contribution from the interior designers within the city. Additionally, the chapter explores the curricular use of intensive design workshops with a singular focus of the student's attention; selected student work from Politecnico di Milano is included.
