In this study, composite nanofibers of polyaniline doped with dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (PANI-DBSA) and Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were prepared via an electrospinning process. The surface morphology, thermal properties and crystal structure of PLA/PANI-DBSA nanofibers are characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM images showed that the morphology and diameter of the nanofibers were affected by the weight ratio of blend solution.

Development of renewable resource-based polymers attracts attention to solve environmental problems due to the build up of polymer (plastic). Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is one of the most widely used polymers which have good biodegradability and processability. The addition of fillers to the PLA matrix aims to improve the characteristics of the PLA, such as mechanical properties of nanocomposites of PLA. Thus, PLA can be use as substitution of fossil fuel-based polymer. Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) can be used as a filler after regeneration process. SBE was extracted and oxidized to take its oil content. Then, SBE was modified with urea solution to increase the interlayer distance. In this study, structure of nanocomposites was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were characterized using Universal Testing Machines. X-Ray Diffraction characterization results show that PLA-SBE nanocomposite and PLA-modified regenerated SBE nanocomposites do not form new peaks, so SBE and modified regenerated SBE is intercalated and partially exfoliated in the PLA matrix. The degree of intercalation/exfoliation is indicated by the results of characterization of mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of PLA-SBE nanocomposite are lower than neat PLA, whereas the mechanical properties of PLA-modified regenerated SBE nanocomposites are higher than neat PLA. The best mechanical properties of nanocomposites were obtained for PLA-5% modified regenerated SBE, with elongation and tensile strength, 3.26%, and 42.22 MPa, respectively. Keywords: nanocomposites, poly(lactic acid), regeneration, spent bleaching earth

In this study, poly (vinyl alcohol) / chitosan blend nanofibers were synthesized by electrospinning process in different polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan weight ratios. The nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). SEM images showed that, 50:50 poly vinyl alcohol/chitosan blend was the ideal ratio for producing beadless nanofiber. The average diameter of the beadless nanofiber was found to be 123 nm. FTIR and XRD results demonstrated the presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the molecules of poly vinyl alcohol and chitosan.

Zeolite X were successfully synthesized from bentonite from Lopburi province, in Thailand using the two-step of hydrothermal method under optimum condition without calcination. The first step of hydrothermal were obtained at 200 °C for 3 h to remove unreacted impurity minerals such as quartz and muscovite. The secondary step of hydrothermal were obtained at 90 °C for 120 h for synthesis of zeolite X. The characterization of zeolite X were examined by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), respectively. The crystal structure of product was determined as zeolite X by XRD. The morphology of SEM images for zeolite X is octahedral shape. FTIR spectra are in accordance with the other characterization results.

In this study, difatty acyl urea (DFAU), synthesized from palm oil, and natural clay (sodium montmorillonite) were used to prepare organoclay (OMMT). The clay modification was carried out by stirring the clay particles in an aqueous solution of DFAU at which the clay layer thickness increased from 1.25 to 2.82. This OMMT was then used for nanocomposite production to improve the property balance of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) by solution casting process. The nanocomposite was characterized using various apparatuses. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results confirmed the production of nanocomposite. PLA modified clay nanocomposite shows higher thermal stability and significant improvement of mechanical properties in comparison with pure PLA. The use of DFAU as a modifier will reduce the dependence on petroleum-based surfactant. In addition to its applications such as films and textile fibers, this nanocomposite represents a good candidate to produce disposable packaging because they have good mechanical, thermal properties, fabricability and processability.

In this study, the bioactive composites based on β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), bioglass (BG) and poly lactic acid (PLA) were prepared. The microstructure, degradability and reaction products of the scaffold soaked in a simulated body fluid (SBF) at 36.5°C for different days were characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and induced coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP). The weight loss and strength decrease with the time were tested. The results showed that at the same porosity, the degradability of the scaffold samples decreased as followed: β-TCP/BG/PLA>β-TCP/BG>β-TCP.The materials had highly bioactive response ability to the Simulate Body Fluid (SBF) and promptly induced a bone like HA layer on the surface of the scaffolds when immersed in the SBF.

The aim of this research was to develop new electrospun membranes (EMs) based on polycaprolactone (PCL) with or without metronidazole (MET)/nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) content. New nHAP with a mean diameter of 34 nm in length was synthesized. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) were used for structural characterization of precursors and EMs. The highest mechanical properties (the force at maximum load, Young’s modulus and tensile strength) were found for the PCL membranes, and these properties decreased for the other samples in the following order: 95% PCL + 5% nHAP > 80% PCL + 20% MET > 75% PCL + 5% nHAP + 20% MET. The stiffness increased with the addition of 5 wt.% nHAP. The SEM images of EMs showed randomly oriented bead-free fibers that generated a porous structure with interconnected macropores. The fiber diameter showed values between 2 and 16 µm. The fiber diameter increased with the addition of nHAP filler and decreased when MET was added. New EMs with nHAP and MET could be promising materials for guided bone regeneration or tissue engineering.

Bovine bone is a considerable source for the production of hydroxyapatite. The recent study reported a novel method to extract hydroxyapatite from bovine bone without producing hazardous residue. The bovine bones were cut and boiled in the opened chamber followed by boiling in pressurized tank. The bones were then soaked into 95% ethanol. Calcination was then conducted in 800°C, 900°C and 1,000°C, for 2 hours. The result was then grinded and sieved. The powder then was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) to measure the purity of hydroxyapatite. It is concluded that the hydroxyapatite derived from this process showed 100% purity, resulting 35.34 ± 0.39% w/w from the wet bone weight and 72.3% w/w from the dried weight. The present extraction method has been proven to yield high amount of pure hydroxyapatite as well as reducing the use of hazardous reagent.
