In this study, the wear behavior of 9SiCr steel under different treatment with plant abrasive was evaluated by using an abrasive rubber wheel tester. The samples’ microstructures were analyzed by a metallurgical microscope, the samples’ worn surface morphology was observed by using SEM.The results show that: With the increasing of hardness of sample, Its wear resistance is greatly improved. Hardness of laser quenching sample is the highest, wear resistance of it is the best, the second is sub temperature sample. The wear rates and the wear coefficients are proportional to the sliding distance. The Laser quenching samplel display a consistent behaviour with a very low wear rate and a small increase of the wear damage is observed during the abrasive wear tests. The worn surfaces of the three kind samples are characterized by the micro-cutting wear, and no treatment sample is accompanied by fatigue wear mechanism.

Tribological behavior of ZrO2 and Si3N4 based nanocomposites with addition of carbon nanofibres and nanotubes has been studied by the pin-on-disc technique. Friction coefficients were measured and recorded, wear rates were calculated in terms of material volume loss per load and sliding distance. The wear damage was studied using optical and electron microscopy and its mechanisms were identified. In monolithic materials the dominant wear mechanism was abrasion, in composites with CNF and with higher volume fraction of CNTs (5 and 10%) fiber pull-out and lubricating by the carbon phases occurred.

The aim of this work is to evaluate the effect of a deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) on the wear behavior and on the microstructure of an aluminum alloy. In order to compare the level of improvement on the wear resistance provided by the DCT with a more traditional technique, a test matrix which included DCT, CrN coated specimens, and combinations of both modification methods was conducted. The wear behavior was investigated using microabrasive wear tests. The cryogenic treated specimens proved to have similar low wear rates as the specimens coated with CrN. The most distinct improvement was reached with a combination of both techniques. In the case of the DCT, the performed microstructural analysis identified the generation of additional GP-zones as the reason for the improved wear resistance.

Titanium and its alloys exhibit a unique combination of physical and corrosion resistance properties which make them ideal materials for space flight engine component such as disks and blades of compressor, marine applications, chemical industries and many bio medical applications. However the use of these materials is limited due to its poor tribological properties. Dry sliding wear tests were performed on Ti-6Al-4V using a pin-on-disc (EN31 steel) configuration. Wear rates were measured with different load and sliding velocity at a constant sliding distance. Microstructures of worn surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS).

In this research, an austempering heat treatment was applied on gray cast iron using various austempering temperatures ranging from 232 °C to 371 °C and holding times ranging from 1 min to 120 min. The microstructure and hardness were examined using optical microscopy and a Rockwell hardness tester. Rotational ball-on-disk sliding wear tests were carried out to investigate the wear behavior of austempered gray cast iron samples and to compare with conventional quenched and tempered gray cast iron samples under equivalent hardness. For the austempered samples, it was found that acicular ferrite and carbon saturated austenite were formed in the matrix. The ferritic platelets became coarse when increasing the austempering temperature or extending the holding time. Hardness decreased due to a decreasing amount of martensite in the matrix. In wear tests, austempered gray cast iron samples showed slightly higher wear resistance than quenched and tempered samples under similar hardness while using the austempering temperatures of 232 °C, 260 °C, 288 °C, and 316 °C and distinctly better wear resistance while using the austempering temperatures of 343 °C and 371 °C. After analyzing the worn surface, abrasive wear and fatigue wear with the presence of pits, spalls, voids, long cracks, and wear debris were the main mechanisms for austempered gray cast iron with a low austempering temperature. However, only small pits and short cracks were observed on the wear track of austempered gray cast iron with high austempering temperature. Furthermore, the graphite flakes were exposed and ground by the counterpart surface during wear tests. Then, the graphite particles would form a tribo-layer to protect the contact surface.

ABSTRACTMechanically polished Ti6Al4V samples were implanted with 100 key nitrogen ions to a fluence of 5.1017 ions/cm2 at two different bulk tenneratures: 370°C and 470°C. Wear tests were carried out with a reciprocating slidina tribotester. Structural modifications and wear morphologies were studied by TEM and SEM. 370°C implanted sample showed the same wear behavior as unimplanted ones, while 470°C implanted sample showed better wear resistance because of a TiN hardened layer. Correlations- between microstructural modifications, wear behavior and mechanisms are reported: results agree with the delamination theory. Comparison with ion- and gas-nitrided samples are presented.

Nitriding is usually used to improve the surface properties of steel materials. In this way, the wear resistance of steels is improved. We conducted a series of studies in order to investigate the microstructural, mechanical and tribological properties of salt bath nitrided AISI 4140 steel. The present study has two parts. For the first phase, the tribological behavior of the AISI 4140 steel which was nitrided in sulfinuz salt bath (SBN) was compared to the behavior of the same steel which was untreated. After surface characterization using metallography, microhardness and sliding wear tests were performed on a block-on-cylinder machine in which carbonized AISI 52100 steel discs were used as the counter face. For the examined AISI 4140 steel samples with and without surface treatment, the evolution of both the friction coefficient and of the wear behavior were determined under various loads, at different sliding velocities and a total sliding distance of 1000 m. The test results showed that wear resistance increased with the nitriding process, friction coefficient decreased due to the sulfur in salt bath and friction coefficient depended systematically on surface hardness. For the second part of this study, four artificial neural network (ANN) models were designed to predict the weight loss and friction coefficient of the nitrided and unnitrided AISI 4140 steel. Load, velocity and sliding distance were used as input. Back-propagation algorithm was chosen for training the ANN. Statistical measurements of R2, MAE and RMSE were employed to evaluate the success of the systems. The results showed that all the systems produced successful results.

In this study, the effect of different counterparts on the wear resistance of AA6082 aluminum alloy was investigated. In tests using pin-on-disk method, 6 mm diameter Al2O3, 100Cr6 and WC-6Co balls were used as counterparts. The tests were carried out using 500 m sliding distance and 5N load. The lowest specific wear rate was measured as 7.58x10-4 mm3/Nm in WC-6Co / AA6082 couple, and the highest value was measured as 9.71x10-4 mm3/Nm in 100Cr6/AA6082 couple. In the Al2O3/AA6082 couple, the specific wear rate of the AA6082-T6 sample was determined as 8.23x10-4 mm3/Nm.While it was observed that the dominant wear type in the 100Cr6/AA6082 pair was abrasive wear, oxidation wear and oxide tribofilm were detected in the WC-6Co/AA6082 and Al2O3/AA6082 couple besides the abrasive wear.

The aim of this work was to study the wear behavior of high-chromium white cast iron of families ASTM A-532 II (B, D) and III A, used in mining equipment, in order to establish relationships between the wear resistance, hardness and microstructure of the alloys, with the ultimate purpose of predicting their resistance to abrasion. Samples from these cast irons were subjected to mechanical wear tests by rotating drum, then their micro/macro hardness was measured and microstructure analyzed by optical and scanning electron microscopy .It was found that when the macroscopic hardness differences were significant there was a strong correlation between the hardness and the loss of mass due to abrasion-impact wear. By contrast, when the alloys had similar hardness, the wear resistance was determined by morphology, size, and the distribution and connectivity of carbides and matrix and therefore was not predictable by an only simple hardness test.

In this study, the dry sliding wear behaviors of SiC particle reinforced AZ91D matrix composites fabricated by stirring casting method were systematically investigated. The SiC particles in as-cast composites exhibited typical necklace-type distribution, which caused the weak interface bonding between SiC particles and matrix in particle-segregated zones. During dry sliding at higher applied loads, SiC particles were easy to debond from the matrix, which accelerated the wear rates of the composites. While at the lower load of 10 N, the presence of SiC particles improved the wear resistance. Moreover, the necklace-type distribution became more evident with the decrease of particle sizes and the increase of SiC volume fractions. Larger particles had better interface bonding with the matrix, which could delay the transition of wear mechanism from oxidation to delamination. Therefore, composites reinforced by larger SiC particles exhibited higher wear resistance. Similarly, owing to more weak interfaces in the composites with high content of SiC particles, more severe delamination occurred and the wear resistance of the composites was impaired.

Currently, the use of sensors and supporting technologies has become indispensable in the assessment of tribological behavioral patterns of composites. Furthermore, the current investigation focused on the assessment of the tribological behavior of the Al–SiCp composite for high-temperature applications. Moreover, the Al–SiCp composite was fabricated by adapting the liquid metallurgy route with varying weight percentages of SiCp (x = 3, 6, and 9). Density, hardness, and high-temperature wear tests were performed to evaluate the hardness and tribological characteristics and properties of modern-day advanced composites. Moreover, the inclusion of SiCp enhanced the advanced composite materials hardness from 60 HV to 110 HV due to a high degree of refinement of the α-phase. Subsequently, the fabricated samples’ wear behavior was assessed by varying the wear parameter viz. the applied load (20 N and 30 N) and sliding distance (250 m, 500 m, 750 m, and 1000 m) with the constant sliding velocity (0.45 m/s) for various temperatures (40 °C, 150 °C, and 250 °C). Moreover, the results revealed that the enhancement in the reinforcement percentage improves the wear resistance. Consequently, the wear rate decreased at 250 °C, possibly owing to the development of the oxide layers. Therefore, the occurrence of delamination and plastic deformation were evidenced in the wear-out surface, thereby depicting the prevalence of delamination and the abrasive wear-mechanism.
