This paper considers on-condition maintenance of a continuously degrading information system, in which the inter-maintenance time and the maintenance time depend on the condition of the system at which maintenance is carried out. The durations of preventive maintenance activities are supposed to be exponentially distributed. Assuming deterioration of the system follows a gamma process, models are established to maximize the system average availability when the effectiveness of the preventive maintenance activity becomes weaker and weaker. Optimal solutions on the condition of the system at which maintenance should be performed and the number of times of maintenance action to be carried out are obtained based on Monte-Carlo simulation. A case study is given to show the procedure of the maintenance model and simulation.

The availability requirement of natural gas compressors is high. Thus, current maintenance architecture, combined periodical maintenance and simple condition based maintenance, should be improved. In this paper, a new maintenance method, dynamic reliability-centered maintenance (DRCM), is proposed for equipment management. It aims at expanding the application of reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) in maintenance schedule making to preventive maintenance decision-making online and seems suitable for maintenance of natural gas compressor stations. A decision diagram and a maintenance model are developed for DRCM. Then, three application cases of DRCM for actual natural gas compressor stations are shown to validate this new method.

Virtual maintenance technique brings new mode for system maintainability design and analysis, however, the theory of virtual maintenance is not fully studied and researches are deficiency in the key field of virtual maintenance modeling and simulation. So virtual maintenance model and simulation control method are studied in the paper. Virtual maintenance model is based on Petri Net and can describe the relations of maintenance resources, and the model structure, formal definition, maintenance object, resource state and model operation are given. In addition, virtual maintenance simulation rules and simulation scheduling method are built in the paper. Simulation scheduling objective, flow and conflict features of maintenance process simulation are analyzed, and conflict strategies are addressed subsequently. Finally, a case study of the LRU repair of an aircraft is conducted, and the result confirms the validation and feasibility of all the studies, which can become a new technique means for maintainability engineering.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide the description of an original framework for maintenance management plan development. The research aims to use in an integrated way different World Class Manufacturing (WCM)-based tools, in order to obtain a model which can be used for preventive maintenance in different industrial contexts.Design/methodology/approachIn this research, a conceptual framework of preventive maintenance was described and then it was evaluated through a qualitative study in an Italian company. The company was chosen based on an initial interview with the operations team and the model area was selected. Then, the location was reorganized in order to obtain a green field which could sustain the implementation of the framework tools.FindingsThe case study was carried out in a small-medium manufacturing company which produces quick-release couplings and multiconnections, ranging from medium to ultra-high pressure. The defined framework has proved to be easy to implement in a company with a corrective maintenance plan, allowing the maintenance department to embrace the preventive maintenance culture. The maintenance model has been well received from the employees.Practical implicationsThe framework allows a standardization of maintenance plans. Firstly, the standardization design itself allows finding previous wastes and consequent improvement areas. Then, it brings the improvement of a single machine which impacts all other machines in its family.Originality/valueThe added value of this study is the ability to integrate different WCM-based tools. Since the framework depicts a step-by-step process; it is also a starting point for companies that want to approach preventive maintenance for the first time.

Virtual maintenance technology based on the concept of concurrent engineering can change the traditional maintainability "serial" design approach which cause the cycle is long, costly and difficult to change the design defects and shortcomings, and also meet the timing and economics of product development needs. However, the theory of virtual maintenance is not fully studied and researches are deficiency in the field of virtual maintenance modeling and simulation. So this article discusses the concept and connotation of virtual maintenance, and virtual maintenance model and simulation control method are studied in the paper. The model of maintenance task simulation called MTN (Maintenance Task Net) is present, and the factors including State, Action and Condition that are defined in MTN are demonstrated. In addition, the paper constructs the fire rules and the control mechanism of virtual maintenance simulation which is driven by MTN. Finally, a case study of the LRU repair of an aircraft is conducted, and the result confirms the validation and feasibility of all the studies, which can become a new technique means for maintainability design and analysis.

The application of mathematical programming for scheduling preventive maintenance in railways is relatively new. This paper presents a stochastic mathematical model designed to optimize and to predict tamping operations in ballasted tracks as preventive condition-based maintenance. The model is formulated as a mixed 0–1 nonlinear program that considers real technical aspects as constraints: the reduction of the geometrical track quality over time is characterized by the deterioration rate of the standard deviation of the longitudinal level; the track layout; the dependency of the track recovery on its quality at the moment of the maintenance operation; the limits for preventive maintenance that depend on the maximum permissible train speed. In the model application, a railway stretch with 51.2 km of length is analysed for a time period of five years. The deterioration model is stochastic and represents the reduction of the standard deviation of the longitudinal level over time. The deterioration rate of the standard deviation of the longitudinal level is simulated by Monte Carlo techniques, considering the three parameters Dagum probabilistic distribution fitted with real data (Vale, Simões 2012). Two simulations are performed and compared: stochastic simulation in space; stochastic simulation in space and time. The proposed condition-based maintenance model is able to produce optimal schedules within appropriate computational times.

Condition-based Maintenance (CBM) can not only efficiently improve the performance of deteriorating system but also guarantee the system operation safety. This paper assumes that the system state is periodically inspected, and a preventive maintenance is performed if the degradation level exceeds a threshold. The effect of maintenance is imperfect, which means that maintenance can restore the system state to somewhere between as good as new and as bad as old. The algorithm is presented to get the solution of long run cost based on Monte-Carlo simulation, and the joint optimization of inspection rate, the threshold value and the number of preventive maintenance activities is investigated for the minimization of long run cost rate. A case study is given to show the procedure of the maintenance model and simulation. Therefore, the correctness and rationality of the model are proved.
