Contribution on the Use of Household Waste as Bio-Admixture

In the civil engineering field, the incorporation of chemical admixtures is now a practical technics' used for improving the properties of concrete, such as improved workability, decreasing the water demand, increasing strength, etc. However, chemical admixtures have some disadvantages such as environmental pollution during both their manufacture and their use, else, there are rare somewhere. Because of this background, bio-admixtures appear principally useful, due to their environmental effect and friendly properties, bio-admixtures are substances obtained from a biodegradable product also resulting from the methanisation. The objective of this research is the valorization of household waste used as a bio-admixture. Moreover studying its effect on cement path workability, start/end of the cement setting.

AbstractFor the past few decades innovation in construction material has grown a lot. This leads to special concrete such as self-compacting concrete, geopolymer concrete, self-healing concrete, etc. To prepare a special concrete apart from regular concreting material some sort of special materials was also needed, like mineral and chemical admixtures. Hence it is necessary to study the effect of these admixtures in cement paste and mortar before studying the same in concrete. Hence an attempt is made to study the effect of mineral and chemical admixtures in the fresh and hardened properties of cement paste and mortar. For this study ultrafine natural steatite powder is taken as mineral admixture and polycarboxylic based superplasticizer and glenium stream 2 were taken as chemical admixtures. Ultrafine natural steatite powder was used as additive to cement in various percentages like 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%. Superplasticizer and viscosity modifying admixture were taken as 1.5% and 0.5%, respectively. Then various combinations were worked out. To study the fresh property of cement paste consistency, initial setting time and miniature slump cone test were done based on the results yield stress of cement paste also calculated empirically. To study the hardened property compression test on cement mortar was done. Based on the test results it is clear that the addition of ultrafine natural steatite powder increases the water demand hence reduces the workability. On the other hand, it increases the compressive strength up to a certain limit. Adding superplasticizer increases the workability and reduces the water demand and viscosity modifying admixture reduces the bleeding and segregation effects hence increases the compressive strength.

Environmental pollution is one of the major concerns throughout the world. The rise of industrialization has increased the generation of waste materials, causing environmental degradation and threat to the health of living beings. To overcome this problem and effectively handle waste materials, proper management skills are required. Waste as a whole is not only waste, but it also holds various valuable materials that can be used again. Such useful materials or elements need to be segregated and recovered using sustainable recovery methods. Agricultural waste, industrial waste, and household waste have the potential to generate different value-added products. More specifically, the industrial waste like fly ash, gypsum waste, and red mud can be used for the recovery of alumina, silica, and zeolites. While agricultural waste like rice husks, sugarcane bagasse, and coconut shells can be used for recovery of silica, calcium, and carbon materials. In addition, domestic waste like incense stick ash and eggshell waste that is rich in calcium can be used for the recovery of calcium-related products. In agricultural, industrial, and domestic sectors, several raw materials are used; therefore, it is of high economic interest to recover valuable minerals and to process them and convert them into merchandisable products. This will not only decrease environmental pollution, it will also provide an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach for materials synthesis. These value-added materials can be used for medicine, cosmetics, electronics, catalysis, and environmental cleanup.

Abstrak: Ditengah Pandemi COVID-19 membuat masyarakat melakukan berbagai aktivitas di dalam rumah, sehingga menimbulkan kejenuhan terutama ibu rumah tangga. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan berbagai aktivitas yang dapat dilakukan di rumah, salah satunya dengan memberdayakan ibu rumah tangga dalam pembuatan sabun cuci dari minyak jelatah. Tujuan dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah untuk memberdayakan masyarakat dalam upaya mengurangi pencemaran lingkungan oleh limbah minyak jelantah. Metode pengabdian kepada masyarakat adalah memberikan penyuluhan kepada masyarakat melalui aplikasi zoom di komunitas masyarakat Puri Mawar Tangerang Banten. Hasil dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini ialah seluruh peserta memahami materi tentang pembuatan sabun cuci dari minyak jelatah, adanya peningkatan keterampilan masyarakat dengan cara mempraktekan pembuatan sabun cuci dari minyak jelatah, selain itu peserta sangat antusias untuk berdiskusi tentang berbagai upaya inovatif yang dapat dilakukan ibu rumah tangga dalam mengurangi pencemaran lingkungan. Pemberdayaan masyarakat ini sangat bermanfaat bukan hanya mengurangi pencemaran lingkungan dari limbah rumah tangga, tetapi dapat meningkatkan pendapatan masyarakat karena sabun cuci yang dihasilkan dapat diperjual belikan.Abstract: During the COVID-19 pandemic, people do various house activities, resulting in saturation, especially housewives. Therefore, various activities can be done at home, one of which is empowering housewives to manufacture laundry soap from barley oil. This community service aims to empower the community to reduce environmental pollution by jelantah oil waste. The community service method is to provide counseling to the community through zoom application in the puri mawar community Tangerang Banten. The result of this community service is that all participants understand the material about laundry soap from barley oil. There is an improvement in people's skills by practicing laundry soap from barley oil. Also, participants are very enthusiastic about discussing various innovative efforts that housewives can make in reducing environmental pollution. This community empowerment helps reduce environmental pollution from household waste and increase people's income because it can trade the resulting laundry soap.

Plastic waste is a garbage that cannot be degradable and very harmful to environmental health conditions because the garbage is included in non-organic waste. In "household plastic waste management in order to prevent environmental pollution, there is  a  problem in  the waste management of household-generated. The problem is 1) how is the policy of setting the plastic waste management household as an effort to prevent environmental pollution in the village of Pedungan district of Denpasar? 2) What are the factors affecting household plastic waste management in Pedungan village? The method in this study is a type of empirical legal research. The approach to the problem used is a fact approach, a case approach, and a sociological approach. In this research, it aims to be able to know the problem solving and to assess the problem in the management of plastic waste in Pedungan village area about the types of garbage, how to manage plastic waste, and the result of plastic waste. Data collection techniques by observation, interviews, and questionnaires, read books and other literature. Analysis of legal data is analyzed and compiled systematically by using qualitative analysis, by analyzing the data obtained from primary and secondary data sources. The waste management is regulated in Decree No. 660/04/I/2019 on the management structure of Pedungan Asri's garbage Bank as household waste management effort, especially in Pedungan village environment.

In this study, taking the pilot zones for green finance reform and innovations set up in 2017 as the objects, a quasi-natural experiment is conducted to assess the environmental effects of green finance policy using the difference-in-difference propensity score matching (PSM-DID) method based on the panel data in 30 provincial-level administrative regions from 2011 to 2019. In addition, further efforts are made to investigate the differences of green financial policies in environmental effect. According to the research findings, the set-up of green finance pilot zones can reduce the environmental pollution, and green finance policy is conductive to environmental enhancement. Meanwhile, a partial mediating effect exists between a region’s innovation capability and industrial structure. On the whole, green finance policy plays the most significant role in improving the eastern region’s environmental pollution, followed by the central region, but barely enhances the environment in the western region. To sum up, the more serious the environmental pollution is, the better the effect of green finance policy.

This paper reports an analysis of current issues related to storing solid household waste, and, specifically, the problem of environmental pollution when unsorted solid household waste (SHW) is ignited. A technology has been developed to improve environmental safety and ensure a reduction in the anthropogenic load on the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere in the event of fires at the sites of solid waste storage. The operation of the proposed equipment, taking into consideration all the provided operating modes and additional options, is energy-saving and automated (or semi-automatic), which makes it especially relevant under modern conditions. The technology significantly improves the efficiency of the processes to eliminate the ignition of SHW and localize their environmental consequences for the territories adjacent to landfills. Laboratory tests were carried out, which proved the effectiveness of practical application for the designed equipment of a new environmentally active adsorption mixture for the purpose of cleaning the waste filtrate, as well as its use for the formation of an anti-filtration screen in the mound of SHW. Experiments have shown that the tested sample of the aqueous suspension of the proposed environmentally active mixture adsorbs calcium (by 92 %), overall iron (by 91 %), overall phosphorus (by 75 %), zinc (by 31 %), and ammonium (by 19 %). This leads to a decrease in the overall toxicity of the solution and indicates the possibility of improving the environmental safety of waste fires when operating the proposed technical solution by purifying the filtrate released during fires in landfills. The reported results, specifically, the technology for localizing the environmental consequences of uncontrolled waste ignition could be used in the process of modernizing the technical support for sanitary treatment schemes in urban areas.

Many electricity generating stations are concerned with the reduction of environmental pollution associated with the thermodynamic activities of power plants. Such environmental pollution includes emissions from exhaust gases, cooling tower blowdown, boiler blowdown and demineralization. In this paper, an exergo-environmental analysis was conducted using design data from the Egbin power plant for a 220MW steam power plant. Enhancement was carried out on the plant under varying pressure and temperature conditions to assess the plant’s performance improvements that would lead to more reduction in environmental pollution. The exergy destruction efficiency value indicates that the boiler sub- system gave the highest exergy destruction in the power plant. Also, sustainability indicators such as environmental effect factor, waste exergy ratio and sustainability index factors have been performed and results presented with respect to the plant. The improvement options considered were: (i) increasing the inlet temperature of the high-pressure turbine at constant boiler pressure, and (ii) the second approach, simultaneous increase in inlet temperature of high-pressure turbine and boiler pressure. The result showed that the second improvement approach gave a better improvement approach than the former by reducing the environmental effect factor by 17.32% and increasing the sustainability index factor by 21.54%. These effects ultimately reduced the steam power plant emissions and improved efficient fuel utilization by the plant for sustainable development and for more power production.
