TiCp/ZA-12 composites have been fabricated by XDTM method and stirring-casting techniques. The tests for mechanical properties reveal that the tensile strength and strength increase with increasing fraction of TiC particles. When the fraction of TiC particles increase up to 10%, the tensile strength and yield strength are 390MPa and 340MPa, respectively and they increase by 11% and 17% than that of matrix respectively. From the analysis of fractography we can see that mixed fracture of cleavage fracture and dimple fracture exists in the TiCp/ZA-12 composites, and fractured particles are not found. Finally the fracture model of composites has been established based on the experimental results.

An investigation into the mechanical properties of K55,N80 and P110 steels was carried out for casing-drilling technology. The obvious presence of bright facets on broken K55 Charpy V-Notch (CVN) sample surfaces was indicative of the effect of microstructure on the cleavage fracture. The appearing of bright facet surfaces of K55 was attributed to the microstructure of ferrite and pearlite. The fracture surfaces of N80 and P110 CVN samples included quasi-cleavage fracture mechanism and dimple fracture mechanism, respectively. The tensile fracture surface of all three types of casing-drilling steels included dimple fracture mechanism, both the N80 and P110 specimen show higher UTS and impact energy values compared to the K55 specimen.

The influence of annealing temperature on the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistant of cold rolling zirconium sheet were studied in the manuscript. The experimental results shown that the tensile strength and yield strength of zirconium sheet were decreased and the elongationwas raised with the raising of annealing temperature from 500 °C to 580 °C. The recrystallization are not happened in zirconium sheet at the annealing temperature of 500 °C. Zirconium sheet complete recrystallized and the strength and elongation get a well match at the annealing temperature of 540°C. Zirconium sheet also complete recrystallized at the annealing temperature of 580°C but the crystalline grain has the tendency of growing. The annealing temperature has no effect on the corrosion resistant of zirconium sheet.

Abstract High-strength steel plays an important role in engineering fields such as infrastructure. For this reason, an accurate determination of its mechanical properties is of critical importance. Considering the inconvenience of conventional mechanical extensometers for the deformation measurement of small-scale specimens, 3D digital image correlation (3D-DIC) was used to measure the deformation of Grade 8.8 bolts and Q690 high-strength steel specimens by means of a uniaxial tensile test, and in this way, stress–strain curves, elastic modulus, yield strength, tensile strength, percentage elongation after fracture, and percentage reduction of area were obtained. Experimental results show that Grade 8.8 bolts and Q690 steel result in higher yield strength and tensile strength than common steel. Moreover, owing to the phenomenon that stress remains constant with strain increase in the yielding stage, the evolution process from elastic deformation to plastic deformation of the specimens during the yielding stage could be studied. Experimental results show that the axial strain of Grade 8.8 bolts increases from 0.3 to 1 % during the yielding stage and for Q690 specimens the corresponding strain increases from 0.4 to 1.8 %.

AbstractThe tunnel defect formed in friction stir weld would dramatically push the mechanical properties of joints into deterioration. In this study, friction stir welding process was adopted to repair the joints of 7N01 aluminum alloy with tunnel defect. The effects of friction stir repair welding process on the microstructure and mechanical properties were comprehensively investigated. Microstructure of the repaired joints shows that the grain size in nugget zone decreases slightly while the recrystallization in the retreating side of thermo-mechanically affected zone is intensified as the joints are repaired. The microhardness of the repaired joints declined slightly compared with the defective joint. However, the yield strength and tensile strength increase and recover to the values of the joints free of defect. The longitudinal residual stress in weld zone increased remarkably as the repair times increase. Compared with the once repaired joint, yield strength and tensile strength of the twice repaired joint reduced slightly, and the throat thickness also reduced during the repeated repair welding process. Therefore, the times of repair welding applied should be limited actually.

In order to alleviate the shortage of global nickel resources, it is imperative to develop low nickel stainless steel. This paper presents a novel approach based on increasing nitrogen and reducing nickel for smelting economical stainless steel. Taking 06Cr19Ni10 stainless steel as the object, the test steels with different nitrogen and nickel content were smelted using vacuum induction furnace (ZG-0.01) under the laboratory conditions, and the effects of alloy content on microstructures, mechanical properties and corrosion properties of the economical stainless steel were investigated. The results show that the microstructure of the tested steel which nitrogen content 0~0.28% and nickel content 5.98~9.63% is still the single austenitic, and the grain size decreases as the nitrogen content increases. Nitrogen deteriorates the impact toughness of the tested steel, and the room temperature impact absorption energy is reduced from 267 J at the nitrogen content of 0 to 228 J at nitrogen content of 0.28%. Rockwell hardness, tensile strength and yield strength increase with the increase of nitrogen content. When the nitrogen content is 0.28%, the optimum mechanical properties of 06Cr19Ni10 steel are obtained. The Rockwell hardness is 95.4 HRB, the tensile strength is 814 MPa, the yield strength is 437 MPa, and the elongation after fracture is 52.5%. The degree of intergranular corrosion of the tested steel is reduced significantly with the increase of nitrogen content, from 0.023 μm to 0.008 μm. The experimental data prove that the composition design concept of increasing nitrogen and reducing nickel is feasible for smelting economical stainless steel.

In order to study the effect of deformation extent on microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast AZ91D magnesium alloy, experiments of direct extrusion were performed at temperature of 420 and different extrusion ratios. The microstructure and mechanical properties of billets and extrudates were measured. Experimental results show that the grain size of as-cast AZ91D magnesium alloy can be dramatically refined by extrusion. Direct extrusion can obviously improve the mechanical properties of as-cast AZ91D magnesium Alloy, comparing with the pre-extruded billet, the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of extrudate can be improved by at least 83%, 154% and 150% respectively. As the extrusion ratio increases, the tensile strength and yield strength of extrudate will increase at first and then fall.

As-cast ZK60 magnesium alloy that has been treated by homogenizing was forward extruded at 380°C and different extrusion ratios. Half of the extruded samples were treated by T5 treatment (10 hours at 170°C). The microstructure and mechanical properties of extruded samples that have been treated by T5 treatment and not been treated by T5 treatment have been measured. Experimental results show that the T5 treatment of extruded ZK60 magnesium alloy will cause the tensile strength and hardness to increase in some sort, the yield strength to increase obviously, but elongation to decrease slightly. When ZK60 magnesium alloy is extruded at 380°C, the second phase, MgZn and a small quantity of MnZn 2, will precipitate, and the distribution of second phase is even and dispersed. After T5 treatment, the change of grain size is not obvious, but the quantity of precipitated phase obviously increases comparing with extruded samples, and some of the precipitated phase aggregate and grow.

In this study, hypoeutectic Al-Si casting alloy was investigated to obtain high strength, according to alloying of Cu Mg, refining of Al-5Ti-B master alloy, modifing of Re and T6 heat treatment. The experimental results show that the mechanical properties of the tested alloy reach peak when addition of Al-5Ti-1B alloy is 1.0% after heat treatment, especially the yield strength, correspondingly, microstructure distribution gets to the best state. When Al-5Ti-1B exceeds 1.0%, the mechanical properties descend gradually. The metallic compounds of Mg2Si phase, CuA12 phase and W phase precipitated along the grain boundary and strengthened dispersively can improve mechanical properties of the tested alloys. The yield strength of samples added 0.1% Re (La 50%, Ce 40%) increases slightly, simultaneously, the tensile strength and elongation decreases. After 0.1% Re, the mechanical properties get down.

TiCp/ZA-12 composites have been fabricated by XDTM method and stirring-casting techniques. The behavior of TiC particle in the solidification interface has been studied through conventional and directional solidification techniques. The results demonstrate that under conventional solidification conditions, the particles with lower content mainly distribute in eutectic phases; while when at a larger content of TiC particles, they exist both in eutectic phases and in primary phases. Under directional solidification, due to the repulsion of primary phases of alloy on TiC particles, the particles congregate and form band structure, and extent of the congregation in band structure relates to TiC particles content. With the increasing of TiC particles content, their congregation in band structure decreases, and the band structure disappears when the content of TiC particles exceeds 6%. The tests for mechanical properties reveal that the tensile strength and yield strength increase with increasing fraction of TiC particles. When the fraction of TiC particles increase up to 10%, the tensile strength and yield strength are 390MPa and 340MPa, respectively and they increase by 11% and 17% than that of matrix respectively.
