Isothermal forging is a near-net shape forming technology for manufacturing complex titanium alloy components. In order to characterize the workability of Ti-6Al-4V alloy during isothermal forging process, the material properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated by isothermal compression tests under different strain rate-temperature, where the temperature range is 850~1000 °C and strain rate range is 0.001~0.05s−1. The obtained flow stress-strain data was used to develop the Arrhenius constitutive model of which material constants considered the compensation of strain. The developed constitutive model was used to simulate the isothermal forging process of Ti-6Al-4V alloy component by finite element (FE) based numerical method. The metal flow and potential defect locations were predicted by numerical simulation. Furthermore, the relevant simulation results were compared with the product in industrial workshop to demonstrate the validity of material constitutive model. During the forging process GH901 superalloys easily produce cracks and defects, such as coarse crystals in tissues, which affect the performance of the alloy. Using GH901 nickel-based alloy, high-temperature compression tests at deformation temperatures of 990, 1040, 1090 and 1140 °C were carried out in a Thermecmastor-Z thermal simulator, with strain rates 0.001, 0.01, 0.1 and 1 s−1. Next, the isothermal forging process of a GH901 disc was simulated using DEFORM finite element simulation software. The results showed that with the increase in deformation temperatures and the decrease in strain rates, the flow stress clearly decreased. The flow stress constitutive model of GH901 superalloy under ε0.3 and the flow stress constitutive model for strain compensation were obtained. The processing map was built, and a reasonable range of thermal processing was obtained. Meanwhile, the isothermal forging simulation verified the reliability of the thermal processing range of the alloy.

The hot deformation behavior of SiC/6168Al composite was studied by means of hot compression tests in the temperature range of 300-450 °C and strain rate range of 0.01-10 s-1. The constitutive model was developed to predict the stress-strain curves of this composite during hot deformation. This model was established by considering the effect of the strain on material constants calculated by using the Zenter-Hollomon parameter in the hyperbolic Arrhenius-type equation. It was found that the relationship of n, α, Q, lnA and ε could be expressed by a five-order polynomial. The stress-strain curves obtained by this model showed a good agreement with experimental results. The proposed model can accurately describe the hot flow behavior of SiC/6168Al composite, and can be used to numerically analyze the hot forming processes.

In order to quantitatively analyze the critical strain for the initiation of dynamic recrystallization in Ni-Fe-based Alloy 718, a series of uniaxial compression tests was conducted in the temperature range 927°C - 1066°C and the strain rate range 5 x 10-4s-1- 5 s-1with varying initial grain size. The critical strains were graphically determined based on one parameter approach and microscopically confirmed. The effect of γ'' (matrix-hardening phase) and δ (grain boundary phase)on the critical strain was simply discussed. The constitutive model for the critical strain of Alloy 718 was constructed using the experimental data obtained from the higher strain rate and the temperature range between 940°C and 1040°C.

Abstract Cast iron alloys with low production cost and quite good mechanical properties are widely used in the automotive industry. To study the mechanical behavior of a typical ductile cast iron (GJS-450) with nodular graphite, uni-axial quasi-static and dynamic tensile tests at strain rates of 10− 4, 1, 10, 100, and 250 s− 1 were carried out. In order to investigate the effects of stress state, specimens with various geometries were used in the experiments. Stress–strain curves and fracture strains of the GJS-450 alloy in the strain-rate range of 10− 4 to 250 s− 1 were obtained. A strain rate-dependent plastic flow law based on the Voce model is proposed to describe the mechanical behavior in the corresponding strain-rate range. The deformation behavior at various strain rates is observed and analyzed through simulations with the proposed strain rate-dependent constitutive model. The available damage model from Bai and Wierzbicki is extended to take the strain rate into account and calibrated based on the analysis of local fracture strains. The validity of the proposed constitutive model including the damage model was verified by the corresponding experimental results. The results show that the strain rate has obviously nonlinear effects on the yield stress and fracture strain of GJS-450 alloys. The predictions with the proposed constitutive model and damage models at various strain rates agree well with the experimental results, which illustrates that the rate-dependent flow rule and damage models can be used to describe the mechanical behavior of cast iron alloys at elevated strain rates.

A series of tensile tests at constant strain rate were conducted on tin-lead based solders with different Sn content under wide ranges of temperatures and strain rates. It was shown that the stress-strain relationships had strong temperature- and strain rate- dependence. The parameters of Anand model for four solders were determined. The four solders were 60Sn-40Pb, 40Sn-60Pb, 10Sn-90Pb and 5Sn-95Pb. Anand constitutive model was employed to simulate the stress-strain behaviors of the solders for the temperature range from 313K to 398K and the strain rate range from 0.001%sP -1 P to 2%sP -1 P. The results showed that Anand model can adequately predict the rate- and temperature- related constitutive behaviors at all test temperatures and strain rates.

The feasibility of forging of AL-1050 alloy of cylindrical heatsink under warm conditions is demonstrated in the present work. The stress-strain curves and friction factor play an important role in the cylindrical heatsink forging. The purpose of forging lubrication is to reduce friction between blank and die, and to decrease resistance of metal flow to die. The stress-strain curves at different temperatures are obtained by compressing tests. The friction factor between 1050 aluminum alloy and die material are determined at different temperatures by ring compression tests with graphite lubricants. The compressing and ring compressing tests are carried out by using the computerized screw universal testing machine. The finite element method is used to investigate the forming characters of the forging process. To verify the prediction of FEM simulation in the cylindrical heatsink forging process, the experimental parameters such as stress-strain curves and fiction factor, are as the input data during analysis. Maximum forging load and effective stress distribution are determined of the heatsink forging, using the finite element analysis. Finally, the cylindrical heatsink parts are formed by the forging machine under the conditions using finite element analysis.

Ultrafine-grained (UFG) commercially pure (CP) Ti with a grain size of about 200 nm was produced by ECAP up to 8 passes using route BC at room temperature. For ECAP processing a proper die set was designed and constructed with an internal channel angle Φ of 120° and an outer arc of curvature Ψ of 20°. Strain rate sensitivity of UFG CP-Ti and CG CP-Ti were investigated by compression tests in the temperature range of 298~673K and strain rate range of 10-4~100s-1 using Gleeble simulator machine. Evolution of the microstructure during compression testing was observed using optical microscopy (OM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Strain rate sensitivity value m of the UFG CP-Ti has been measured and is found to increase with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate, and is enhanced compared to that of CG CP-Ti. Result of the deformation activation energy determination of UFG CP-Ti indicates that the deformation mechanism in UFG CP-Ti is correlated to the grain boundaries.

The deformation behavior of a Udimet720Li superalloy under hot compression tests was characterized in the temperature range of 1060~1160°C and strain rate range of 0.001~20s-1. Processing maps were conducted at a series of strains to calculate the efficiency of hot working and to recognize the instability regions of the flow behavior. A Zener-Hollomon parameter is given to characterize the dependence of peak stress on temperature and strain rate. The efficiency of power dissipation of the Udimet720Li superalloy obtained in a strain range of 0.1~0.7 are essentially similar, which indicates that strain does not have a significant influence and the instability region shown in high strain and high strain rates at all temperatures. The regions for the full recrystallization can be divided by the dissolution beginning temperature of primary γ'which are the optimum hot working parameters.

The hot deformation behaviors and microstructural evolution of Mg-3.0Nd-0.2Zn-0.4Zr (wt. %, NZ30K) alloy were investigated by means of the isothermal hot compression tests at temperatures of 350-500 °C with strain rates of 0.001, 0.01, 0.1 and 1s-1. The results showed that the flow stress increased to a peak and then decreased which showed a dynamic flow softening. The flow stress behavior was described by the hyperbolic sine constitutive equation with an average activation energy of 193.8 kJ/mol. The average size of dynamically recrystallized grains of hot deformed NZ30K alloy was reduced by increasing the strain rate and/or decreasing the deformation temperature. A large amount of fine particles precipitated in the grains interior and at the grain boundaries when heated to the compression temperatures and soaked for 5min below 450 °C. However, the volume fraction of particles decreased significantly when soaked for 5 min at 500 °C, and the coarse particles precipitated mainly at the grain boundaries. Hot deformation at the temperature of 500 °C around and at the strain rate range of 0.1s-1 was desirable for NZ30K alloy.

The deformation behavior of DC cast Al-2Si and Al-15Si alloys have been studied by means of compression test at temperature range of 300-500°C and strain rate range of 0.01-5 s-1. The results show that the flow stress of the Al-Si alloys increases with decreasing compression temperature and increasing strain rate. The flow curves determined from the compression tests exhibit that the deformation of the materials is controlled by two competing mechanisms: strain hardening and flow softening. Higher silicon content in the alloys also leads to higher flow stress during deformation and tend to show more significant flow softening. Particle damage during the deformation may have an influence on the flow curves of the alloys.
