This work focuses on an experimental and numerical study of a tuff barrel vault first damaged by differential vertical settlements of the abutments without rotations, then reinforced with a FRCM system composed by a fiber-reinforced mortar embedding a basalt fiber net, and finally subjected to a concentrated load on a generatrix (still ongoing). The geometry of the vault (polycentric near parabolic shape) and the masonry material (Apulian tuff) have been chosen in order to be representative of some masonry vaults common in rural constructions of Apulia region; also, a load representative of the infill weight has been applied during all the experimental tests. In parallel to the experiments, numerical simulations by a heterogeneous FE Abaqus model calibrated on the experimentally determined mechanical properties of materials have been performed. This model aims at reproducing the settlement phase and to accurately predict the load bearing capacity of the reinforced structure. To this aim, Concrete Damage Plasticity model has been used for modeling mortar joints and cementitious matrix, whereas tuff bricks have been assumed linearly elastic; finally, the basalt fiber net used in the FRCM reinforced has been described by suitable equivalent elasto-damaging trusses.

The results of a first experimental research program on masonry vaults strengthened by means of GFRP meshes embedded in a thin layer of lime mortar, are herein presented. The tests were designed to reproduce the pattern of a transversal horizontal load proportional to the vault self-weight. The typical simplified loading patterns generally used for the experimental tests concern concentrated vertical loads at the crown section or at 1/4 of the span, but some numerical investigations evidenced that these configurations are not able to reproduce the actual behavior and the effectiveness of the reinforcement. So a specific rig was designed to apply the horizontal load pattern.Solid brick masonry barrel vaults were considered (thickness 120 mm, arch span 4000 mm, arch rise/radius = 0.75). Three quasi-static cyclic tests were performed: the first concerned an unreinforced vault, the second a vault reinforced at the extrados through the application of a mortar coating reinforced with a GFRP mesh and the third reinforced at the intrados surface with the same technique. The experimental results demonstrated the technique effectiveness and the important increment of ductility of the vaults.

Abstract This paper presents a numerical study on pipes ductile fracture mechanical response using a phenomenological computational damage model. The damage is controlled by an initiation criterion dependent on the stress triaxiality and the Lode angle parameter, and a post-initiation damage law to eliminate each finite element from the mesh. Experimental tests were carried out to calibrate the elastoplastic response, damage parameters and validate the FEM models. The tested geometries were round bars having smooth and notched cross-section, flat notched specimens under axial tensile loads, and fracture toughness tests in deeply cracked bending specimens SE(B) and compact tension samples C(T). The calibrated numerical procedure was applied to execute a parametric study in pipes with circumferential surface cracks subjected to tensile and internal pressure loads simultaneously. The effects of the variation of geometric parameters and the load applications on the pipes strain capacity were investigated. The influence of longitudinal misalignment between adjacent pipes was also investigated.

The principal factors that affect the characteristics of contact problem between cam and follower vary enormously during the operating cycle of this mechanism. This includes radius of curvature, surface velocities and applied load. It has been found over the last decades that the mechanism operates under an extremely thin film of lubricant. Any practical improvement in the level of film thickness that separates the contacted surfaces represents an essential step towards a satisfactory design of the system. In this paper a detailed numerical study is presented for the cam and follower (flat-faced) lubrication including the effect of introducing an axial modification (parabolic shape) of the cam depth on the levels of film thickness and pressure distribution. This is achieved based on a point contact model for a cam and flat-faced follower system. The results reveal that the cam form of modification has considerable consequences on the level of predicted film thickness and pressure distribution as well as surface deformation.

An important requirement in the design of an inlet duct of a turboprop engine is the ability to provide foreign object damage protection. A possible method for providing this protection is to include a bypass branch duct as an integral part of the main inlet duct. This arrangement would divert ingested debris away from the engine through the bypass. However, such an arrangement could raise the possibility of separated flow in the inlet, which in turn can increase pressure losses if not properly accounted for during the design. A fully elliptic three-dimensional body-fitted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code based on pressure correction techniques has been developed that has the capability of performing multiple block grid calculations compatible with present day turboshaft and turboprop branched inlet ducts. Calculations are iteratively performed between sets of overlapping grids with one grid representing the main duct and a second grid representing the branch duct. Both the grid generator and the flow solver have been suitably developed to achieve this capability. The code can handle multiple branches in the flow. Using the converged flow field from this code, another program was written to perform a particle trajectory analysis. Numerical solutions were obtained on a supercomputer for a typical branched duct for which experimental flow and pressure measurements were also made. The flow separation zones predicted by the calculations were found to be in good agreement with those observed in the experimental tests. The total pressure recovery factors measured in the experiments were also compared with those obtained numerically. Within the limits of the grid resolution and the turbulence model, the agreement was found to be fairly good. In order to simulate the path of debris entering the duct, the trajectories of spherical particles of different sizes introduced at the inlet were determined.

This paper conducts a numerical simulation of the antiseismic performance for single-layer masonry structures, completes a study on crack distributions and detailed characteristics of masonry structures, and finally verifies the correctness of the numerical model by experimental tests. This paper also provides a reinforced proposal to improve the antiseismic performance of single-layer masonry structures. Results prove that the original model suffers more serious damage than the reinforced model; in particular, longitudinal cracks appear on bottoms of two longitudinal walls in the original model, while these cracks appear later in the reinforced model; a lot of cracks appear on the door hole of the original model, and no crack appears in the reinforced model till the end of seismic waves; seismic damage of walls in the reinforced model is obviously lighter than that in the original model; dynamic responses at all observed points of the reinforced masonry are obviously less than those of the original model. Strains at all positions of the reinforced model are obviously smaller than those of the original model. From macroscopic and microscopic perspectives, the computational results prove that the reinforced proposal proposed in this paper can effectively improve the antiseismic performance of the masonry structure.

Basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) has been applied for strengthening concrete structures. However, studies on reinforced concrete (RC) slabs strengthened by BFRP strips under impact loads are limited in open literature. This study investigates the efficiency of using BFRP strips with various strengthening layouts and anchoring schemes on the impact resistance of RC slabs. A total of 11 two-way square slabs were prepared and tested, including one reference specimen without strengthening and ten slabs strengthened with BFRP strips and/or anchors. The RC slabs were impacted by a drop weight with increasing height until slab failure. The observed failure modes include punching shear failure, BFRP sheet debonding and reinforcement fracture. The failure modes and the effects of using various strengthening schemes on the impact resistant capacity of RC slabs were examined. The quantitative measurements, such as impact velocity, indentation depth and diameter, were compared and discussed. In addition, numerical studies were carried out by using LS-DYNA to simulate the impact tests of RC slabs with and without BFRP strengthening. With the calibrated numerical model, the impact behavior of slabs with various dimensions and strengthening layouts under different impact intensities can be predicted with good accuracy.

In this paper, the dynamic plastic response of isosceles triangular plates under hydrodynamic loads was investigated experimentally using a drop hammer machine. To do this, a series of experimental tests were carried out on mild steel triangular plates with different thicknesses to bring insight into the effect of geometry and mechanical properties of the plate on the deformation of specimens, which were impacted by a piston-induced pressure wave inside a water tube. The effects of various impact loads originated from different drop hammer standoff distances, and hammer weights concerning variations of deflection of the center of mass were described. The experimental results were presented in terms of deflection of the center of mass of the plates and deflection profiles. The experimental results showed that the plate with lower thickness experienced higher deflection-to-thickness ratio. An empirical model was also proposed based on new dimensionless numbers for triangular plates in order to predict the ratio of deflection of the center of mass to thickness. The dimensionless numbers considered the effects of plate geometry, hydrodynamic applied load, and mechanical properties of materials. Comparison between the experimental results and empirical predictions demonstrated that the suggested model is accurate enough to predict of the response of isosceles triangular plates under hydrodynamic loads.

Tidal turbine array optimization is crucial for the further development of the marine sector. It has already been observed that tidal turbines within an array can be heavily affected by excessive aerodynamic interference, thus leading to performance deterioration. Small-scale experimental tests aimed at understanding the physical mechanisms of interaction and identifying optimal distances between machines can be found in the literature. However, often, the relatively narrow channels of laboratories imply high blockage ratios, which could affect the results, making them unreliable if extrapolated to full-scale cases. The main aim of this numerical study was to analyze the effects of the blockage caused by the laboratory channel walls in cases of current and also current surface waves. For this purpose, the performance predictions achieved for two turbines arranged in line for different lateral offsets in case of a typical laboratory scale were compared to the predictions obtained for a full scale, unconfined environment. The methodology consisted in the adoption a hybrid Blade Element Momentum–Computational Fluid Dynamics (BEM-CFD) approach, which was based on the Virtual Blade Model of ANSYS-Fluent. The results indicate that (1) the performance of a downstream turbine can increase up to 5% when this has a lateral separation of 1.5D from an upstream device in a full-scale environment compared to a misleading 15% calculated for the laboratory set-up, and (2) the relative fluctuations of power and thrust generated by waves are not significantly affected by the domain dimensions.
