The paper enlightens the connection between the specifics of the fine-grained concrete structure and the mechanics of its destruction under crack propagation with due account of damping effect of limestone fines. It is possible to obtain specific information about the ways of controlling the structure formation of concrete by finding out the relationship between the mechanism of formation, and damping mechanism of limestone additives retarding the crack propagation during consolidation and destruction of concrete.

In a competitive business environment at the Bottom of the Pyramid smallholders supplying global value chains may be thought to be at the whims of downstream large-scale players and local market forces, leaving no room for strategic entrepreneurial behavior. In such a context we test the relationship between the use of strategic resources and firm performance. We adopt the Resource Based Theory and show that seemingly homogenous smallholders deploy resources differently and, consequently, some do outperform others. We argue that the ‘resource-based theory’ results in a more fine-grained understanding of smallholder performance than approaches generally applied in agricultural economics. We develop a mixed-method approach that allows one to pinpoint relevant, industry-specific resources, and allows for empirical identification of the relative contribution of each resource to competitive advantage. The results show that proper use of quality labor, storage facilities, time of selling, and availability of animals are key capabilities.

AbstractAutomatic bird detection in ornithological analyses is limited by the accuracy of existing models, due to the lack of training data and the difficulties in extracting the fine-grained features required to distinguish bird species. Here we apply the domain randomization strategy to enhance the accuracy of the deep learning models in bird detection. Trained with virtual birds of sufficient variations in different environments, the model tends to focus on the fine-grained features of birds and achieves higher accuracies. Based on the 100 terabytes of 2-month continuous monitoring data of egrets, our results cover the findings using conventional manual observations, e.g., vertical stratification of egrets according to body size, and also open up opportunities of long-term bird surveys requiring intensive monitoring that is impractical using conventional methods, e.g., the weather influences on egrets, and the relationship of the migration schedules between the great egrets and little egrets.

Abstract Motivation Bio-entity Coreference Resolution focuses on identifying the coreferential links in biomedical texts, which is crucial to complete bio-events’ attributes and interconnect events into bio-networks. Previously, as one of the most powerful tools, deep neural network-based general domain systems are applied to the biomedical domain with domain-specific information integration. However, such methods may raise much noise due to its insufficiency of combining context and complex domain-specific information. Results In this paper, we explore how to leverage the external knowledge base in a fine-grained way to better resolve coreference by introducing a knowledge-enhanced Long Short Term Memory network (LSTM), which is more flexible to encode the knowledge information inside the LSTM. Moreover, we further propose a knowledge attention module to extract informative knowledge effectively based on contexts. The experimental results on the BioNLP and CRAFT datasets achieve state-of-the-art performance, with a gain of 7.5 F1 on BioNLP and 10.6 F1 on CRAFT. Additional experiments also demonstrate superior performance on the cross-sentence coreferences. Supplementary information Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

This article discusses the relationship between a consumer lifestyle and the environment. The willingness to adapt to a sustainable lifestyle was tested through a questionnaire among students of Mendel University in Brno, who are theoretically well-informed people. Overall, 417 students answered, i.e., 19% of the respondents. The students generally recognised the need to address environmental issues, and 90.6% intended to change their lifestyle in this direction. Among the barriers, they mentioned in particular lack of time, lack of financial resources, lack of specific information and insufficient conditions. Addressing this issue requires close co-operation in education between governmental and non-governmental organisations in both the public and private sectors. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the situation in that it has drawn attention to the response of local companies to the global problem.

Correlating engineering properties with index properties has assumed greater significance in the recent past in the field of geotechnical engineering. Although attempts have been made in the past to correlate compressibility with various index properties individually, all the properties affecting compressibility behaviour have not been considered together in any single study to examine which index property of the soil correlates best with compressibility behaviour, especially within a set of test results. In the present study, 10 soils covering a sufficiently wide range of liquid limit, plastic limit, and shrinkage limit were selected and conventional consolidation tests were carried out starting with their initial water contents almost equal to their respective liquid limits. The compressibility behaviour is vastly different for pairs of soils having nearly the same liquid limit, but different plasticity characteristics. The relationship between void ratio and consolidation pressure is more closely related to the shrinkage index (shrinkage index = liquid limit - shrinkage limit) than to the plasticity index. Wide variations are seen with the liquid limit. For the soils investigated, the compression index relates better with the shrinkage index than with the plasticity index or liquid limit.Key words: Atterberg limits, classification, clays, compressibility, laboratory tests.

AbstractI review the nature of three-dimensional collapse in the Zeldovich approximation, how it relates to the underlying nature of the three-dimensional Lagrangian manifold and naturally gives rise to a hierarchical structure formation scenario that progresses through collapse from voids to pancakes, filaments and then halos. I then discuss how variations of the Zeldovich approximation (based on the gravitational or the velocity potential) have been used to define classifications of the cosmic large-scale structure into dynamically distinct parts. Finally, I turn to recent efforts to devise new approaches relying on tessellations of the Lagrangian manifold to follow the fine-grained dynamics of the dark matter fluid into the highly non-linear regime and both extract the maximum amount of information from existing simulations as well as devise new simulation techniques for cold collisionless dynamics.

Flanders is a very densely populated region in the economic heart of Europe. To monitor the anthropological impact on the biological integrity of the freshwater courses, the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) uses the Multimetric Macroinvertebrate Index for Flanders (Gabriels et al. 2006) which was recently developed under the influence of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD, EU 2000). This multimetric tool replaces the Belgian Biotic Index (BBI: range 0=dramatically poor quality to 10=very good quality), a monitoring system based on the sensitivities to pollution of the different macroinvertebrate taxa (De Pauw & Vanhooren 1983, De Pauw et al. 1986). Although recently replaced, the BBI has been used for the past 20 years and this extensive monitoring campaign produced a considerable amount of information on the distribution of macroinvertebrate taxa in Flemish freshwater courses. The Trichoptera (caddisflies) constitute one of these taxa. Unfortunately, determinations of caddisflies as part of the BBI monitoring, are accomplished only at the family level. Specific information on the occurrence and ecological preferences at the species level is scarce and outdated. The only comprehensive report documenting the occurrence of Trichoptera in Belgium dates back to 1984 (Stroot 1984) and since then only minor revisions and additions to the original report have been published (Stroot 1985, 1987; Stroot & Neven 1989). Therefore, the objectives of our research are to update the old species records and to elaborate and improve the ecological and phylogenetic knowledge of the Flemish Trichoptera by (a) identifying the caddisfly species that occur in Flanders; (b) determining their present distribution; (c) detecting which environmental variables influence this distribution; (d) studying whether the relationship among these variables and the species assemblages can be used to distinguish among the ecoregions in Flanders, which are based on similarities in climate, geology, geomorphology, (geo)hydrology and soil characteristics (Sevenant et al. 2002) and (e) investigating the phylogenetic relationships among the Flemish Trichoptera and evaluating their accordance with the current taxonomic classification.

A new mechanism for the formation of ilmenite and magnetite series of granitoids in the Sikhote-Alin orogenic belt is proposed. The existing distribution zones of these magmatites are associated with the regional redox background, where magma crystallization occurs. The paper shows the relationship between the redox background in the lithosphere of the region and subduction processes in the Cretaceous-Paleogene time. The proposed mechanism of formation of the ilmenite and magnetite zones of Sikhote-Alin also explains the differences in redox conditions during the crystallization of Mesozoic magmatites in the orogens of the Eastern and Western Pacific coasts.
