Turbocharger impellers undergo extreme cyclic speed conditions and thus fatigue fracture in service. Any kind of defects, even defects with sizes of tens of micrometres, can make significant impact on service life of the impellers. The alloy used for thixocast impellers is the aluminum alloy 319s. T61 heat treatment is used to improve mechanical properties. However, the solution treatment in the standard T61 heat treatment of the 319s alloy can induce incipient melting defects. This paper carried out systematic study of formation of defects caused by the incipient melting during solution treatment in the thixocast and heat treated impellers, using optical and scanning electron microscope. Based on the study, the critical temperature of incipient melting is detected. An optimized two-stage solution treatment is therefore proposed.

This work investigates the effect of rejuvenation heat treatment, with double-step solution treatment at the temperature from 1150 °C to 1200 °C, on the recovered microstructure of IN-738 cast superalloy. The superalloy has been long-term exposed as a turbine blade in a gas turbine prior to this study. After double solution treatment and aging at 845 °C for 12 h and 24 h, the recovered microstructures were examined by using a scanning electron microscope. Coarse γ΄ particles, that have presented in damaged microstructures, could not be observed in the samples after the rejuvenation heat treatment. In addition, the image analysis illustrates that the reprecipitated γ΄ particles in the samples with double-step solution treatments increase significantly in sizes during aging than that in the samples with the single-step solution treatment. Furthermore, the measurement of the samples hardness presents that the as-receive sample hardness is improved after rejuvenation heat treatment studied in this work.

It is the objective of this study to investigate the effect of ECAP processing and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of the UFG 7075 alloy. Also the effect of post ECAP heat treatment is investigated. The alloy is processed by ECAP after annealing as well as solution treatment to produce an UFG structure. Furthermore mechanical properties and their variations during annealing and aging are investigated. The hardness of the pre-ECAP annealed and the pre-ECAP solutionised 7075 aluminum alloy has increased significantly compared with that of the CG sample. Also hardness of ECAPed specimen has not experienced significant changes in post-ECAP heat treatment and indicated that the alloy had approximately good thermal stability.

The purpose of this paper is to present the microstructure and mechanical behavior of 6060 aluminum alloy after intense plastic deformation. Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) was used as a method of severe plastic deformation. Before ECAP part of the samples were heat treated to remove internal stresses in the commercially available aluminium alloy. The evolution of microstructure and tensile strength were tested after 1, 3, 6 and 9 ECAP passes in annealed and non annealed states. It was found that intensely plastically deformed refined grains were present in the tested samples and exhibited increased mechanical properties. Differences were noted between samples without and after heat treatment

The mechanical properties of cellulose nanofiber-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol composite were studied. Neat polyvinyl alcohol films, cellulose nanofiber sheets, and their nanocomposites containing cellulose nanofiber weight ratios of 5, 15, 30, 40, 45, 50 and 80 wt% were fabricated. Heat treatment by hot pressing at 180℃ was conducted on the specimens to study its effect to the mechanical properties and the results were compared with the non heat-treated specimens. Morphology of the composites was studied by scanning electron microscopy and the mechanical properties were evaluated by means of tensile tests. The results showed that increase of cellulose nanofiber content from 5 wt% to 80 wt% has increased the tensile strength of the composites up to 180 MPa, with cellulose nanofiber content higher than 40 wt% yielding higher tensile strength. The heat-treated specimens exhibited higher tensile strength compared to those of untreated specimens.

AbstractBy using the wrought aluminum alloys can be created castings with higher mechanical properties than the castings made of standard foundry aluminum alloys, but it is necessary to handle the process of making sound castings without any defects such as hot tears and shrinkage porosity. In experiments, we have been studied of wrought aluminum alloy EN AW-2024 which has been processed by the casting with crystallization under pressure with forced flow. Castings were heat treated by standard T6 heat treatment.

Heat treatment is widely used to improve the properties of Al–Si–Mg alloys and its outcomes are influenced by the parameters applied during the treatment. This study describes the effect of the solution and artificial aging treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of die-cast Al–Si–Mg alloys. The microstructure of the as-cast Al–Si–Mg alloy was mainly composed of α-Al, complex needle-type eutectic Si particles, Mg2Si, and α-AlFeMn. The complex needle-type eutectic Si particles disintegrated into spheroidal morphologies, while the Mg2Si was dissolved due to the solid solution treatment. The maximum yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) values were 126.06 and 245.90 MPa at 520 °C after 90 min of solution heat treatment, respectively. Although the YS and UTS values of the Al–Si–Mg alloys reduced due to the solution treatment, the elongation (EL) of the solid solution heat-treated Al–Si–Mg alloys was improved in comparison to that of the as-cast Al–Si–Mg alloy. The maximum YS and UTS of 239.50 and 290.93 MPa were obtained after performing artificial aging at 180 °C for 180 min, respectively. However, the EL of the aging heat-treated alloy was reduced by a minimal value.

Shear-clinching has proven to be a suitable technology for joining of high-strength materials. However, the mechanical properties of the upper joining partner are limited due to the high strains, which occur during the process. Therefore, shear-clinching of the high-strength aluminum alloy AA7075 in the T6 temper is not possible. Yet, the mechanical properties of hardenable alloys of the 7000 series can be influenced by a heat treatment. Thus, within the scope of this work, the joinability of the high-strength alloy AA7075 in shear-clinching processes in dependance of its temper is investigated. The as fabricated state F, the artificially aged T6 temper, a paint baked state and the naturally aged T4 temper are compared to the fully solution annealed W temper as well as to a retrogression heat-treated state. For retrogression heat treatment, a laser is used as heat source, heating up the alloy for a short term in order to only partially dissolve precipitations. The resulting mechanical properties are determined with uniaxial tensile tests. Moreover, the influence of the mechanical properties of AA7075 on the shear-clinching process, the joint formation and the resulting joint strength is analyzed.

The influences of cooling rate, hydrogen inflating time, degassing time, inclusion content on the distribution of pores within the ingot , hydrogen content and the mechanical properties of 1050 aluminum alloy were investigated by tensile test, optical microscope(OM), scanning electron microscope(SEM). With the increasing inflating hydrogen time, the hydrogen content increases, while, the strengths and elongation decrease. With the increasing degassing time, the hydrogen content decreases, while, the strengths and the elongation increase. With increasing cast temperature, the hydrogen content remains constant at first and increases obviously from 7200C to 7600C, while the strengths and the elongation decrease gradually. The crack is mainly originated at outcrop of slip step, inclusion and porosity.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate some of physical and mechanical properties of rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) as function of microwave heat treatment process. The specimens were heat treated at three temperature levels of 150 °C, 180 °C, and 220 °C for 20 min in a small microwave oven connected to a computer. Bending characteristics, namely modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR) as well as hardness of the samples were tested. Dimensional stability in the form of swelling and water absorption of the specimens were also determined. Based on the findings in this work it appears that microwave can be used successfully for heat treatment of rubberwood. Overall mechanical properties of the samples were adversely influenced by the treatment. MOE, MOR and hardness values of the samples treated at a temperature of 220 °C had 2.37, 3.69, and 2.12 times reduced than those of control samples, respectively. Dimensional stability of the heat treated samples as a result of 2-h and 24-h water soaking improved. Micrographs take from scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) revealed that certain amount of damage took place in the cellwall of the treated specimens. Overall discoloration on the samples due to microwave heat treatment was found insignificant.

Secondary aluminium alloys are made out of aluminium scrap and aluminium-processable waste by recycling. These alloys contain different alloying elements such as Al, Cu, Fe, Si and Mg that form intermetallic phases in aluminium matrix and influence on the microstructure, basic mechanical properties and microhardness evolution in aluminium cast alloy. As experimental material was used secondary aluminium cast alloy AlSi9Cu3. Material was subjected to heat treatment (age-hardening) consisting of a solution treatment at temperature 515 °C with holding time 4 hours, than water quenching at 40 °C and artificial aging by different temperature 130 °C, 150 °C and 170 °C with different holding time (2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 hours). The age-hardening led to changes in the morphology of structural components, but also leads to precipitation of finer hardening phases in the material substructure. As optimal age-hardening mode for secondary aluminium cast alloy AlSi9Cu3 was determined mode consisting of solution treatment at temperature 515 °C with holding time 4 hours and artificial aging at temperature 170 °C with holding time 16 hours. After this heat treatment cast alloy shows the best changes in microstructure and mechanical properties. These changes are comparable with changes by primary AlSi9Cu3 cast alloy.
