A natural compound of marine herbal origin has been used in Persian Traditional Medicine to relieve some symptoms of multiple sclerosis. The present study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of a patented extracts of the traditional receipt (MS14). In this preliminary experiment, we used seven groups of six rats: the control group received vehicle, the two positive control groups were treated with either sodium salicylate (300 mg/kg) intraperitoneal (i.p.) or methyl prednisolon (MPN 10 mg/kg) i.p., while the test groups were treated with a solution centrifuged MS14 (SANT 100 mg/kg) and suspension of MS14 (SUSP 100, 150, 300 mg/kg) i.p. After thirty minutes, paw volume was measured by plethysmometer and immediately formalin solution was injected subcutaneously into the hind paw and after an hour, inflamed paw volume was measured. In days 2-8, the inflamed paw volume was measured and immediately drugs were injected i.p. The anti-inflammatory effect of MPN was significant only on days 5 and 6. The anti-inflammatory effect of SS was significant only on the 6th day, while the anti-inflammatory effect of SANT MS14 (100 mg/kg) was also significant only on the 6th day. SUSP MS14 (150 mg/kg) significantly reduced edema from second to 6th day. Intra-peritoneal injection of SUSP MS14 with 300 mg/kg was toxic, so excluded from the study. This research indicates that the MS14 possesses an anti-inflammatory effect after intra-peritoneal administration. Comparative anti-inflammatory effects of MS14 with Glucocorticoids in this study, may justify a possible mechanism for its action in multiple sclerosis, if further studies will provid strong statistically confirmatory effects in animals and safety human trials.

Abstract The study aimed to investigate the possible anti-inflammatory activity of larch sawdust as feed supplement in lactating sows’ diet and its possible effect on the prevalence of Postpartum Dysgalactia Syndrome under field conditions. In a Greek farrow-to-finish pig farm, fifteen sows were randomly and equally allocated to a negative control group (NC group), a positive control group (PC group), and a treatment group (LT group). The animals of the first two groups received 99% basic diet and 1% corn starch, while LT group animals received 99% basic diet and 1% larch sawdust. The whole trial period lasted 35 days (7 days prior to farrow – day of weaning). At parturition day, animals of the PC group received 2 ml of an anti-inflammatory drug intramuscularly (meloxicam, Metacam®, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica), while the animals of both other groups, received 2 ml of normal saline. Results showed insignificant differences among experimental groups for parameters such as post-partum rectal temperature and piglets performance. On the contrary, a significant increase of mean milk lactation index was observed in LT and PC groups on the 4th day of lactation period, when compared with NC group (p=0.014). Additionally, mean IL-6 concentrations in blood in the LT group showed a tendency for reduction when compared with those found in NC, and insignificant difference (p>0.05) when compared with those observed in PC group 24 hours postpartum. Moreover, the respective TNFα mean level in the LT group at 24 and 72 hours after parturition was similar to that found in PC group, respectively) and significantly lower than that determined in the NC group (p=0.003, p=0.024. The results suggest a possible anti-inflammatory effect of larch sawdust in sows.

Marine omega-3 from fish contains high EPA dan DHA which may have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. The objective of study is to analyze the anti-inflammatory effect of marine omega-3 in rats. The method of this study is pre-post control experimental. The acute anti-inflammatory effect of marine omega-3 were investigated through carrageenan induced paw edema in rats. Thirty minutes before the procedure, the experimental groups were treated with fish oil 40 and 60 mg/kg; sodium diclofenac (5 mg/kg) as positive control groups and span 80-tween 80 as negative control groups. The degree of paw edema was measured by caliper. The marine omega-3 showed anti-inflammatory effect in a dose-dependent manner. The results of 60 mg/kg of marine omega-3 was significantly different compared with the negative. Overall, the marine omega-3 has acute anti-inflammatory activity in rats.

Sea cucumber, Holothuria scabra, can be found abundantly in Indonesian seas, which is also known to possess several medicinal properties. Spirulina platensis is another marine resources that has recently been extensively researched for its medicinal ability, such as anti-inflammatory effect. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of H. scabra extract combined with S. platensis extract in reducing inflammation. This study uses male Wistar rats as the study animal. Inflammation was induced by injecting carrageenan solution into the mice paw. Combination of H. scabra and S. platensis extract with various combination ratio (1:1; 1:2; and 2:1) was applied to the mice paw. Diclofenac sodium was used as the standard control therapy. Edema inhibition rate and anti-inflammatory efficacy were measured by analyzing the edema size and calculating the edema difference. Combination of H. scabra and S. platensis with 1:1 ratio has the largest edema inhibition volume compared to the other treatments. H. scabra and S. platensis combination outperforms the positive diclofenac sodium control group in terms of edema inhibition. The highest anti-inflammatory effect is obtained in the combination of H. scabra and S. platensis with 1:2 ratio, however, the anti-inflammatory efficacy is not as potent as the positive control. The effectivity of Holothuria scabra and Spirulina platensis extract in reducing the edema might be caused by their ability to reduce the levels of several inflammatory markers, including IL-6, NO, MMP9, and COX-2. This result suggests that H. scabra and S. platensis combination has anti-inflammatory effect shown in mice paw edema model.

 Abstract: One phase of wound healing is the inflammatory phase. Haruan fish extract has shown to accelerate the healing process up because it has anti-inflammatory effects. Toman fish originates from the same genus as the Haruan fish, but its anti-inflammatory effect remains unknown. It was done to analyzed anti-inflammatory effects of Toman fish extract. This study was true experimental design with posttest-only control design. Twenty-seven male mice of Balb-C strain were divided into 3 groups. Incision wound of 1 cm was made along the back of the mice. Nine mice in each group were sacrificed on 3rd days, then histopathology examination was conducted with Haematoxylin eosin. There were significant differences between treatment group given Toman fish extract and positive control group given Haruan fish extract, and also compared to the negative control group in PMN cell examination. There were significant differences between treatment group given Toman fish extract and positive control group given Haruan fish extract compared to negative controls on the number of macrophage cells. Toman fish extract could lower the number of PMN cells and was able to increase the number of macrophages on the 3rd days. The focus of our study is to compare the anti-inflammatory effect of extracts prepared from Algerian mollusk called Helix ,on induced lung inflammation in rats: aqueous AE, HE and organic OE extracts. Animals were classified into six groups: control group T was instilled with NaCl (0.9%) in the trachea, negative control group was instilled with in trachea (5mg//Kg), positive control group was instilled with and treated with an anti-inflammatory drug, groups SAE, SHE and SOE were instilled with and treated with aqueous, and organic extracts respectively (4mg//Kg). 24h after instillation, we sacrificed animals, blood samples and fluid lavage (BALF) were collected. Lungs were for investigation. We measured activity (MPO) in BALF. Results showed induces a massive in lungs. HE and OE decreased leukocyte count in BALF and blood. AE increased leukocyte count in blood and decreased it in BALF. The three extracts decreased MPO activity in BALF, reduced number of inflammatory cells in the and protected lung from beads injuries. Both AE and HE reduced edema in lung. We conclude that treatment with Helix had an anti-inflammatory effect on inflammation.

Background: Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that can lead to some serious disabilities. Despite using various immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory drugs that have therapeutic effects, they cannot reduce its progression completely, and have some unwanted side effects too. The immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects of the β-D-Mannuronic acid [M2000] have been proven in several surveys, and the present research was designed to determine its toxicity and therapeutic effects in MS patients. Methods: This study was performed on 15 MS patients who took 25 mg/kg/day the oral form of the β-D-Mannuronic acid for six months, and 15 healthy people as a control group. Serum levels of Urea, Creatinine, GGT, Vitamin D3, Uric acid, and Anti-Phospholipids were compared to evaluate the therapeutic and possible toxic effects of this drug after this period. Results: Non- toxic effects through the study of Urea, Creatinine, GGT, and non-significant changes in Uric acid and AntiPhospholipids levels, besides a significant rise in Vitamin, D3 levels in the M2000 treated cases were found. Conclusions: Our results suggested that β-D-Mannuronic acid is a safe drug and has no toxicity when administered orally and also has some therapeutic effects in MS patients.

Abstract Objectives Several cultivars of Allium cepa L. have been studied for anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities but there is inadequate information on such biological activities of the concentrated extracts of the Nigerian grown red cultivar A. cepa bulb. Methods The anti-inflammatory models used in this study were Carrageenan-induced paw oedema and formalin-induced paw lick in rats, while acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing, hot plate reaction, hot water tail flick tests in mice were the analgesic models. Results At 30 min post-induction (pi), the inhibition of paw oedema (62.50%) by 200 mg/kg of methanol extract of red cultivar A. cepa bulb (MERCACB) was significantly (p<0.001) higher than that of indomethacin (15.63%) at 10 mg/kg. The paw oedema inhibition at 60 min pi by MERCACB (76.92%) was significantly higher than that of indomethacin (41.03%). At the early phase of formalin paw-lick test, the pain reaction time (PRT) of rat treated with MERCACB (400 mg/kg) was significantly lower than that of indomethacin and the control groups. The hotplate test revealed that PRT of mice treated with 800 mg/kg of MERCACB were significantly (p<0.01) longer in comparism to indomethacin and control groups. The PRT of mice subjected to thermal pain due to hot water and treated with 800 mg/kg of MERCACB was significantly (p<0.05) longer than that of the control group. Conclusions These findings indicate that MERCACB possesses potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties which confirm the traditional use of the plant for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and may be useful as a future therapeutic agent.

<p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p><strong>Background</strong>; In Indonesia, most diarrhea disease in 1995 to 2001 are caused by Shigella spp. Shigella spp infection can cause various symptom dan complication. Generally, the treatment by using antibiotic can cause antibiotic resistance. Sea cucumber (Holoturia scabra) is an herb that known, available, and easy to consume by society and has an antibacterial effect. Therefore, further research to study the effect of Holoturia Scabra on <em>Shigella Dysentriae</em> growth in vitro is needed.</p><p><strong>Objectives</strong>: The goal of this research is demonstrate the effect of sea cucumber (Holoturia scabra) to the growth of the <em>Shigella dysentriae</em> bacteria in vitro.</p><p><strong>Method</strong>: The method in this research is Posttest Only Control Group. There are 6 groups, 4 types of and 2 control groups. The concentration of the treatment group is 100%,50%, 25%, and, 12.5% while for positive control tests using chloramphenicol and aquadest as a negative control.</p><p><strong>Result</strong>: The result showed there is an influence on the intake of sand cucumber to the growth of the Shigella dysenteriae.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: Sea cucumber (<em>Holoturia scabra</em>) inhibit the growth of <em>Shigella dysenteriae</em>.</p><p><strong>Key words</strong>: <em>Shigella dysenteriae</em>, sea cucumber (<em>Holoturia scabra</em>), antibacterial</p>
