It is argued that there are currently two separate research approaches to behaviour in organizations; the qualitative approach and the quantitative approach, each with their own framework, criteria of proof, and accepted procedures. Reasons for the dominance of the quantitative approach and the renewed interest in the qualitative approach are presented. Implications for future research in organizational behaviour are developed. There is a need for more multi-approach research efforts and for a conceptual scheme that will locate the two approaches in relation to one another.

This study aims to determine the position and function of DPS in contract making, supervision of contract implementation, and the effectiveness of contract supervision at Bank BRI Syariah Binjai Branch. In this research, the researcher conducted research using qualitative methods. Research that uses a qualitative approach aims to explore or build a proportion or explain the meaning behind reality. Researchers are based on reality or events that take place in the field. Qualitative research methods can be interpreted as research that produces descriptive data, regarding spoken and written words, and observable behavior of the people being studied. Qualitative research is also research that produces descriptions in the form of words or verbally from the phenomenon under study or from people who are competent in their fields. The results of this study are that the position and function of the DPS in drafting the BRI Syariah Bank contract is appropriate. In general, what is being done is to supervise all forms of activities related to existing contracts in the bank. This supervision also takes the form of standardizing and ratifying contract standards that apply nationally in the sense that it applies to all BRI Syariah branches, as well as assisting parties in disseminating information to BRI Syariah branches in the regions.

The use of theory in science is an ongoing debate in the production of knowledge. Related to qualitative research methods, a variety of approaches have been set forth in the literature using the terms conceptual framework, theoretical framework, paradigm, and epistemology. While these approaches are helpful in their own context, we summarize and distill them in order to build upon the case that a balanced and centered use of the theoretical framework can bolster the qualitative approach. Our project builds on the arguments that epistemology and methodological rigor are essential by adding the notion that the influence of theory permeates almost every aspect of the study—even if the author does not recognize this influence. Compilers of methodological approaches have referred to the use of theory as analogous to a coat closet in which different items can be housed or a lens through which the literature and data in the study are viewed. In this article, we offer an evaluative quadrant for determining the appropriate use of theory in qualitative research and a diagram of the qualitative project that points to the central role of a theoretical framework. We also caution against the overreliance on theory in the event that it begins to limit the ability to see emergent findings in the data.

There are several theories in qualitative research including Grounded Theory (GT). It is a theory discovered, developed, and achieved by collecting and analyzing data systematically about specific phenomena. it is the result of a study called grounded Research (GR). The purpose of this study is to present the role of Strauss's Grounded research in Arabic research (PBA) and the types of GT produced. This study uses qualitative-descriptive research, with primary data sources from PBA that have been published in the last five years, namely 15 topics. The results of this study indicate that the roles of GR in PBA as a type of qualitative research are 5 topics, as a qualitative approach are 8 topics, as a qualitative method is 1 topic, and as a qualitative technique is 1 topic. In general, the role of GR is as an approach in qualitative research. The types of GT are 10 topics in the form of theory, 2 topics in the form of hypothesis, and 3 topics are in the form of assumptions. In general, the result of GR is GT in the form of theory.

Despite their importance as the largest contributor to the economic growth of a country, many SMEs fall behind in attaining customer satisfaction. This can be as a result of the gap that exists between expectations of customers and the deliverables by the SME providers. In the previous chapter, the authors explained the role of service quality via SERVQUAL and the GAP model. This chapter will, therefore, extend the argument by providing insights into the importance of qualitative research to enhance the services provided by SMEs in order to minimize this “GAP.” The chapter first illustrates the service blueprint to highlight the importance of service design to carry out the business. Later, various qualitative studies undertaken in service marketing discipline are highlighted. Using a qualitative approach, two separate studies (i.e., focus group studies) were conducted involving 10 SME providers and 10 SME consumers in the automotive industry (i.e., used car sales showroom). The FGDs provided insights into identifying the critical incidents of success (and or failure) of these SMEs.

AbstractHow can gift and gift-giving studies be relevant to the study of institutions and vice versa? This is the question we broadly address in the introduction to this symposium while drawing on the contributing articles and sketching out a possible future research in a perspective of integration between these two fields of study. Is the gift an institution? What types of methodological approaches would be most suitable in view of such integration? We define the gift as transfers underpinned by institutions, including customs and norms. We contend that the institutional thought can employ empirical and qualitative research methods used by anthropology and that there are important and fruitful lines of tension between gift-giving and institutions – from the relationship between freedom and obligation to the role of third sector between state and market – worthy of further research in the future.

AbstractThis study aims to explain the role of Usif in environmental management to maintain ecological balance, preserve natural resources and no less important is to prevent all forms of disasters due to natural damage. This research uses a case study method with a qualitative approach. In qualitative research, this is possible to do, namely by using the perspective of pragmatism in which researchers focus on the problem or problem to be solved. The results showed that usif's position in the traditional governance structure of the Boti community as the supreme leader and role model of the community, usif played an important role in developing and implementing customary rules based on hereditary traditions. One of the cultural values implanted by usif in the community is about the cosmological understanding that mountains, rocks and trees are analogous to bones, water as blood, land as meat which must be protected by everyone. Prohibitions concerning water, forests and animals are a very important part of life. These cultural values are then believed to be the most effective ways of managing nature.

Understanding and meeting consumer’s needs, wants and desires is of the key importance for success in the market. While market orientation is well researched, the role of design within marketing has been neglected. Therefore the main purpose of this study is to develop the initial conceptual model researching relationships between design and market orientation. The initial conceptual model based on theory is proposed as the starting point for future research. The preliminary qualitative research about the potentials of design orientation from the managers’, as well as the designers’ perspectives has been executed at this stage of the research. Results show that differences between the two groups of examinees exist, mostly in their perception of design. The proposed design orientation-market orientation model contributes to both marketing and design scholars, as well as marketers, designers, and managers in practice. The results of this study may provide a basis for future research on the topic.
