The current article is a continuation of a previous article (Leaf, Uys Louw 1997) suggesting that alternatives to the current traditional perceptions of learning and therapeutic methods are essential if learning institutions are to enable learners to move successfully into the next millenium. The need for the speech-language therapist to adopt a non-traditional approach to learning and to change from a language instructor to a learning facilitator within a consultative-collaborative role in the unique South African situation is discussed. Research results, specifically relating to how the speech-language therapist can assist teachers in changing to a non-traditional facilitative role, are presented.

The current article suggests that alternatives to the current traditional learning methods are essentials if learning institutions are to provide people with effective life skills that enable them to be autonomous learners. This suggestion is based on a body of literature on alternative learning which stresses the need for fundamental change and hence, a paradigm shift in perception of learning in order to cope with the world-wide information explosion. The alternative non-traditional approach proposed in geodesic learning which stresses learning how to learn and self-directed inquiry as essential life skills which enable systems as well as the people in the systems to bring about their own transformation in response to changing situations and requirements. The current article discusses an alternative service delivery model, the geodesic information processing model, which falls within the realms of the geodesic philosophy. The implications of this alternative approach for the speech-language therapist are discussed.

Abstract The sanitation regulatory milestone in Brazil was established in 2007; regulatory agencies are responsible for assuring that service providers work in compliance with sanitation plans. The Water Supply and Sanitation Services (WS&SS) provided to subnormal clusters present peculiar features that require regulatory agencies to have appropriate tools to perform such monitoring. The aim of the current article is to build and present a system of indicators used for this purpose. A combination of traditional and participatory approaches was used to collect the indicators. Eleven indicators were proposed in the participatory approach and twelve were inserted in the traditional approach. These indicators were assessed by experts and applied to Cubatão County. Thus, a system comprising twenty-three indicators is herein presented to help monitoring the contractual and planning goals of WS&SS provided to subnormal clusters. The model is innovative and can be used in Incentive-based or in Sunshine regulations.

South Africa is experiencing an exceptionally high crime rate and many people, across the various ethnic groups, are beset by poverty. The question is whether the prevalence of violence in South Africa is the result of neocolonialism or postcolonialism, among other complicated sociological factors. The current article suggests how postcolonial hermeneutics can provide access to the diverse complexities of Africa. Postcolonial consciousness means that the experience of the Other is taken seriously from their own perspective. From the perspective of anti-societal language in the Gospel of Matthew, postcolonial theory is presented as a tool for biblical interpretation that assists in identifying colonial intentions that informed and influenced the South African context. Such theory calls for a constructive reading of concerns relating to justice. The article focuses on the Jesus saying, as influenced by Roman imperial policy. It deals with the comparison between the fate of beasts and that of the son of man, who has nowhere to lay his head (Mt 8:20).

A profound thinker like Calvin basically has to answer the following two questions: What “is” and what “ought” to be? The first question deals with what reality looks like, its ontological structure or one’s type of thought. The second question con- cerns one’s view of the norms valid for created reality, the direction which one’s life takes or the spiritual trend of one’s thinking.  In a previous article in the same issue of this journal, Calvin’s answer to the second question was already investigated. Among all the spiritual trends of his time, his main motive was to be obedient to God, his Word and his will. We now turn to the answer to the first question: What types of philosophies and theologies emerged within these various spiritual trends which could have influenced Calvin’s thinking?   The investigation develops through the following steps. Firstly, the question is posed whether Calvin really succeeded in the direction of his thinking, viz. to be a radical-biblical reformational thinker. This question is divided into three sub-questions: was Calvin influenced by extra-biblical ideas? If so, to what extent? How did he employ pre-Christian insights? The second and main section tries to answer these difficult questions by reviewing seven most prominent philosophical and theological types of thinking. The third section indicates the contribution of a Christian philosophical analysis of his worldview. The con-cluding section draws the last lines of Calvin’s “intellectual portrait”.

AbstractWe examine the manner in which South African-owned multinationals devolve power to their international subsidiaries in Africa, and the resulting effects of the interaction between strategy and structure. The research suggests that a dynamic process of power distribution may develop, in terms of the following: (1) the performance of the subsidiary, its expertise and experience to adapt to local market demands; and (2) the multinational’s need to manage the risks propagated by the African operating environment in which it operates. There is a dual facet to power devolvement, one in which South African multinationals opt for risk mitigation through long-standing control, often at the expense of operational adaptation. In contrast with the literature, which sees multinational corporations as differentiated networks, in the South African case we find a more traditional approach with clear headquarters and ‘miniature replica’ subsidiaries. This suggests that South African multinational corporations are still emerging and that it will take time to develop differentiated networks.

Nowadays, learning a Pharmaceutical Profession is an increasing challenge. Apart from traditional texts, lectures and self-guided individual learning, pharmaceutical educators are encouraged to find and implement ways to promote higher order thinking, collaborative learning and to increase students' motivation. One way of achieving these objectives is to complement traditional learning methods with the development and implementation of Case Based Learning (CBL), supported in real life situations. Methods regarding real problems stand in contrast to a more traditional approach to learning and instruction. They promote learner-centered, small group, interactive learning experiences, instead of large group, didactic, teacher-centered instruction. Developing such a learning approach can be a challenge. In this sense, it becomes relevant to promote and share experiences already underway and by doing so, disseminate knowledge in this field. It is our goal with this text to share our experience in the design and implementation of a Case Based Approach to Therapeutics.   Type: Idea Paper

The traditional approach to strategic management is an essentially rational approach. Present-day realities, however, are characterized by great uncertainty in the environment ('chaos'), making it difficult to achieve relatively stable strategic fit or organizational alignment in the longer term. The dilemma is one of a new paradigm or, will a more contemporary approach within the traditional framework suffice? The Miles and Snow strategic typology represents a case in point for the traditional approach. A comprehensive literature analysis of this approach suggests that the originally postulated framework still applies, even given today's change and uncertainty in the external environment. An empirical analysis of an integrated, and somewhat extended model of Miles and Snow was applied to the South African situation. It confirmed the Miles and Snow requirement for internal consistency but findings with regard to external fit proved inconclusive. South African organizations were found to have an internal and thus short-term focus, making them extremely vulnerable to global competition. The article concludes that strategy today should perhaps better be seen as an extention or redirection of conventional strategy into the realm of a more dynamic, flexible and adaptive approach to strategy, rather than as a total paradigm shift.

The article deals with the problem of dating Plato’s dialogue «Euthyphro». Since the very concept of «early Socratic dialogue» is questionable - neither in the genre, nor in content, nor in methodological terms, the dialogues usually included in this group cannot be considered a single corpus - insofar as their authorship is questionable, that is why the traditional approach needs to be revised. Having shown in a previous article that the «Protagoras» refers to Plato’s early dialogues, while the «Euthyphro» is probably the late dialogue of Corpus Platonicum, the author distinguishes the group of school dialogues in direct dramatic form and demonstrates their mutual closeness. After having shown the examples of the dependence of «Minos», «First Alcibiades» and «Crito» on Plato’s late dialogues, the author concentrates on finding parallels between the «Euthyphro» and the «Laws». The proximity in addressing controversial topics, direct parallels between the definitions of piety in the «Euthyphro» and the «Laws», and an assessment of the significance of piety and obedience to the state in the two dialogues lead to the conclusion that the «Euthyphro» is an example of the Academy’s discussion of a certain topic from the «Laws»: the relationship between justice and piety.
