Radars demand low profile and light weight antenna subsystems. Microstrip antennas possess these characteristics and serve as an alternative to the bulky and heavy weight reflector/slotted waveguide array antennas, thus an ideal choice for radars. Here, a single line fed microstrip antenna with pierced corners is designed. This antenna has improved parameters compared to the conventional square microstrip antenna. The main problem encountered is in designing the patch antenna with optimum values for various antenna parameters. In order to solve this problem, an alternative solution used is Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The antenna is also optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The parameters considered in all the cases are return loss (S11) and VSWR which was designed using FEKO software. The designed antennas are found to radiate in the C-band, which covers frequencies in the range 5-8GHz, applicable in most of the modern radars. The simulation design is carried out using CADFEKO suite.

A microstrip patch antenna is low profile antenna mounted over a high impedance electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) substrate is proposed. In this paper, Microstrip patch antenna with rectangular EBG structure is proposed and studied. The proposed antenna has compact structure with a total size of 29.44x38.036mm2 . The designed antenna resonates at Particular Single frequency with improved return loss, VSWR and gain. The resonant frequency of the antenna 2.4GHz without and with EBG and improved return loss of -17.61dB and -18.30dB. With rectangular EBG the antenna gives improved gain of 2.09 dB. The Proposed antenna is simulated by using Simulation software ie.(IE3D) and simulated results are in good with practical antenna characteristics.

A novel butterfly-shaped patch antenna for wireless communication is introduced in this paper. The antenna is designed for wideband wireless communications and radio-frequency identification (RFID) systems. Two symmetrical quasi-circular arms and two symmetrical round holes are incorporated into the patch of a microstrip antenna to expand its bandwidth. The diameter and position of the circular slots are optimized to achieve a wide bandwidth. The validity of the design concept is demonstrated by means of a prototype having a bandwidth of about 40.1%. The return loss of the butterfly-shaped antenna is greater than 10 dB between 4.15 and 6.36 GHz. The antenna can serve simultaneously most of the modern wireless communication standards.

The microstrip antenna required for higher frequency application is to be light in weight, easy to fabricate and small in size. As the applications in S-band and Ku-band are increasing with the increase in technology the requirement for higher data rate so the proposed work is to design a 24GHz (ka band) rectangular microstrip antenna with stripline feeding, return loss to be less than -20dB and VSWR less than 0.5. The substrate is chosen to be RT/duroid 5880 with relative permeability 2.2. it is capable of covering satellite application, telemetry. HFSS software tool is used to design the antenna.

Background: Modern communication devices are very much dependent on the operation of low profile antennas. The objective of this paper is to perform the design and simulation of a rectangular microstrip patch antenna at a resonant frequency of 9.5 GHz. Methods: Design of the antenna is given with various substrates like FR4, Teflon and Ceramic substrates at the desired frequency. For each substrate, the performance of the antenna is measured in terms of its return loss and Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR). Results: Ansoft High-Frequency Structure Simulator is used to simulate the antenna characteristics. Conclusion: Performance characteristics of the antenna with three different substrates are compared to identify the substrate that provides the accurate return loss and VSWR.

A microstrip patch antenna is designed for a wearable antenna. The performance of microstrip patch antenna loaded with reactive impedance surface (RIS) is described in terms of gain, bandwidth and return loss. The antenna is investigated in two conditions which are conventional microstrip antenna with RIS and without RIS. The designed antenna is also aimed at size reduction therefore it will be suitable for a wearable application. This antenna which is made fully using textile and it is designed for operation in the 2.45 GHz band. The performance of microstrip patch antenna loaded with RIS is described in terms of gain, bandwidth, return loss and radiation pattern. The antenna designed with RIS operates at 2.45 GHz. Bandwidth enhancement is achieved with RIS where the designed antenna can cater frequency from 2.4 GHz to 3 GHz. A gain enhancement is achieved of 20% is achieved compared with the conventional patch antenna. Although the size of the patch is reduced with the introduction of RIS, the overall size of the antenna with the substrate is almost similar to the conventional patch antenna. However, the performance of the antenna is greatly enhanced with the use of RIS.

This paper designed circular ring microstrip patch antenna using aperture coupling feeding techniques with rectangular slots on the patch for LTE. The use of aperture coupling feeding techniques were expected to optimize antenna parameters performance. The addition of rectangular slots on the patch produced multi resonant frequencies than the original characteristics. The simulated optimized design generated 1.8 GHz, 2.1 GHz, and 2.72 GHz with Return Loss value -22.3683 dB, -18.8133 dB, -24.3451 dB and VSWR value 1.1648, 1.259, 1.1291. Meanwhile, the measurement results of fabricated antenna showed the frequency produced by the antenna was 1.8 GHz with value of Return Loss and VSWR -18.257 dB and 1.278 in a reference value of VSWR < 2 and Return Loss < -10 dB.

With the ever-increasing need for wireless communication and the emergence of many systems, it is important to design broadband antennas to cover a wide frequency range. The aim of this paper is to design a broadband patch antenna, employing the three techniques of slotting, adding directly coupled parasitic elements and fractal electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures. The bandwidth is improved from 9.3 to 23.7%. A wideband ranging from 4.15 to 5.27 GHz is obtained. Also, a comparative analysis of embedding EBG structures at different heights is also done. The composite effect of integrating these techniques in the design provides a simple and efficient method for obtaining low-profile, broadband, and high-gain antenna. By the addition of parasitic elements the bandwidth was increased to 18%. Later on by embedding EBG structures the bandwidth was increased up to 23.7%. The design is suitable for a variety of wireless applications like WLAN and radar applications.

Microstrip patch antenna is mostly used in modern communication devices over conventional antennas mainly because of their size. In this review paper a survey is conducted on commonly used techniques and design used in microstrip antenna papers which has been used by authors for designing of an efficient, low profile, small, compatible, affordable microstrip antenna, mainly used to designed reconfigurable, multiband and wideband antennas, after that a initiator patch design is given with dimensions on which technique will be applied for the analysis of different parameter of antenna.

The objective of the paper is to design and investigate a rectangular microstrip antenna that covers the band from 2.4 to 3.6 GHz. The proposition consolidates investigation of fundamentals of microstrip patch antenna. A progression of simulation in Ansoft HFSS (High Frequency System Simulation) has been carried out to discover the dual operating frequency. The qualities of the patch antenna rely on its different geometrical parameters. The investigation is carried in terms of two prime factors: Return loss and radiation pattern.
