Dissimilar welding between low carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel using both Tungsten inert gas and metal inert gas welding has been reported. However, the combination of SS304 and mild steel has less tensile strength in both TIG and MIG welding. Therefore, this study is undertaken with the objective of finding the weld strength of EN19 and SS304L using TIG and MIG welding with different parameters. Tensile strength and hardness of the welded region is found to be higher than that of the base material. The comparison of microstructure near the weld pool and the base material revealed the changes in composition of materials besides the formation of marten site in the welded region. The main application of this material thus prepared by welding processes could be in automobile industries, food industries and nuclear pressure vessels.

Abstract: Welding is an enormously essential manufacturing technique which allows the users to create permanent joints efficiently, due to its durability this process is extensively used in various industries like automotive, construction as well as in the aviation industry. The present study focuses on the optimization of the Metal Arc Welding using VIKOR method. Four input variables Current, Voltage, Wire Feed Rate and Gas Flow Rate are considered to study their effect on three responses tensile, bending and hardness on the weldments of AISI 1008 low carbon steel material. Experiments were planned as per Taguchi‘s L9 OA. As traditional Taguchi method is not adequate to solve multi responses problem, to overcome this limitation MCDM approach VIKOR analysis has been carried out for obtaining optimal parameters setting for multi-response optimization. Three specimens (for tensile, bending, and hardness) for each experimental run are fabricated for the measurement of respective strength and hardness. Investigation is done by following the steps of VIKOR method, and optimal parameter setting for multi quality response is obtained corresponding to the lower VIKOR index value. Keywords: Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Welding, VIKOR, S/N ratio, ANOVA

The purpose of the numerical method consideration was to obtain detailed data allowing evaluating the performance of the welding process: changing the volume of the weld, the radius of the weld, the radius of the weld-affected zone. During the simulation the authors have derived dependencies of the parameters of spot welding of low-carbon steel up to 3.2 mm thick. These dependencies will determine the quality of the welds. The correct combination of spot welding parameters will ensure a firm joint and good welding quality.

Several rotating rates and welding speeds were chosen to joint 6063/3A21 dissimilar aluminum alloys, tensile strength of the welds were measured to analyze effect of welding parameters on weld performance. Results show that tensile strength of the weld is better than the base material. Weld tensile strength will decrease under a too high or too low welding speed while effect of rotating rate on weld strength is relatively small. The weakest position is at heat affected zone at 3A21 side after T6 post weld heat treatment.

Low-carbon steel Q235B was widely used in low or middle pressure equipments, which were not only withstanding the corrosive effect of the environment or medium, but also the high stress in service processes. In this paper, acetic acid accelerated corrosion test of low-carbon steel Q235B under the action of various stress levels was conducted, and its pitting corrosion behavior was studied by corrosion morphology, pitting corrosion parameters, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that, the degree of pitting corrosion of low carbon steel Q235B with stress was more serious than that of non-stress. And the corrosion started from grain boundary, which was corroded before grain itself, and then grains fell off or dissolved. Furthermore, it would have the tendency of deep hole corrosion with stress, which was more of a threat to the structural safety of pressure vessels.

A Nb alloyed low carbon steel was processed by hot equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) and following transformation. The workpieces were heated up to the 960°C in the furnace for 10 min within the container block. Before extrusion, the die was preheated to 400oC. The workpiece was cooled in the die after ECAE process. 1 pass and 2 pass via route C were conducted at a speed of 32mm/s, the inter-pass time is about 2 sec. The sample of average ferrite grain size of about 2μm, a tensile strength of 800MPa, a total elongation about 20% is produced after 2 pass ECAE processed and subsequent cooling.

Abstract In this study, the effects of austempering on the microstructure, mechanical properties (micro hardness, impact energy and tensile strength) and corrosion behaviours of AISI 1018 low carbon steel were evaluated. The steel specimens were subjected to heat treatment by austenitizing at 830°C, maintained in this condition for 90 min before rapid cooling in a NaNO3 salt bath sustained at 300°C for isothermal transformation for additional 50 min and finally allowed to air cool to room temperature. The as-received and the austempered samples were tested for corrosion in both 0.5M aqueous acidic (HCl) and 0. 5M alkaline (NaOH) media. Microstructural investigation using scanning electron microscope (SEM) reveals transformation from ferrite/pearlite phases to bainite over the austempering process. Interestingly, significant improvements of 15.7% to 95.7% in the various mechanical properties (micro hardness, impact energy and tensile strength) and corrosion resistance in both media were observed.

The thermography is an attractive technique to record the real-time temperature during the continuous welding processes. The temperature distribution during the weld zone is essential for understanding and evaluating the metallurgical properties of the joints. The knowledge of the material emissivity curve is necessary for the precise acquisition of thermography data. This emissivity value is usually assumed constant in the thermography software data acquisition, resulting in inaccurate thermographic data. The surface emissivity usually depends on the temperature. Thus, the values obtained in the literature may not be valid for materials of interest under the process’s conditions. Especially in the case of the low carbon steels, the emissivity data available are scarce and frequently obtained at low temperatures (below 200oC). Therefore, we proposed a methodological procedure to measure the effective surface emissivity, which considers the effect of temperatures and surface conditions. This research was focused on the development of an experimental methodology for determining the emissivity curve, using as the sample, a low carbon steel (0.07% C) with 0.21 mm thickness obtained from the productive stock of a continuous annealing line in the steel plant of the Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN). The normal sample emissivity was evaluated in the temperature range from 100ºC to 800ºC. It was proposed a model based on a sigmoid function to represent the effective emissivity during temperature rise. The sigmoid model parameters were obtained by a fitting procedure using temperature measurements obtained by thermocouples. The results showed an effective emissivity variation as a function of temperature, where emissivity values raged in the interval of 0.09 to 0.83. Thus, the useful emissivity curve was used to correct the thermography data obtained in electrical resistance seam welding (RSEW) with three levels of heats inputs. The correlation for the emissivity curve incorporated in the thermography software was applied to the thermal profiles of the welds analyzed from 441ºC to 713ºC. These values are consistent with the welding process used. The developed methodology can be applied, in a similar way, in the correction of profiles in other types of welding processes.
