Eco-Translatology, a new eco-translation paradigm, is put forward by Chinese Professor Gengshen Hu and has been gaining popularity in recent years. Guided by the eco-translatology theory, the study analyzes the adaptive strategies that translators used in the English subtitle of Lost in Russia from the following dimensions: language, culture and communication. And the analysis sheds some light on subtitle translation and helps subtitle translators better apply eco-translatology to produce a well-received English version.

ABSTRACTThis article contains a study of film adaptation from a literature media (novel) into audio-visual media(film). This research is a case study of Perempuan Berkalung Sorban film by Hanung Bramantyo, whichwas adapted from a novel with the same title that was written by Abidah el-Khalieqy. By combining a textanalysis method from Thomas Leittch, Mathew T. Jones’ film adaptation theory and the result of interviewto confirm the text analysis, this research produced some interesting findings. The research verified thatthe adaptation’s process does not merely focus on technical issue in media adaptation (from novel tofilm), but also focuses on another aspects that will involve the audience i.e. a fact that text and dialoguebecome references that will be appreciated by audience. As a result, there were excessive distortions anddeviations on the text that were created by the film maker caused a bias interpretation. Audiences nolonger interpreted the film as a visual text objectively. Instead, they would think about certain prejudiceagainst the film maker. In film adaptation, certain tendencies of film maker are easy to be predicted byaudience. Kajian ini berupa studi kasus terhadap film Perempuan Berkalung Sorban karya HanungBramantyo, yang merupakan adaptasi dari novel dengan judul sama karya Abidah el-Khalieqy.Dengan menggunakan metode gabungan, yakni analisis teks yang berdasar pada teori adaptasifilm dari Thomas Leittch, Mathew T. Jones, dan wawancara tertulis untuk mengkonfirmasianalisis teks tadi, kajian ini menemukan hal menarik, yakni alih media bukan sekedar persoalanteknis pemindahan media, melainkan juga pemindahan yang menimbulkan efek-efek tertentubagi penonton. Apresiasi penonton dilandasi kesadaran bahwa terdapat teks lain yang menjadirujukan film bersangkutan. Akibatnya, distorsi dan deviasi yang terlalu jauh yang dilakukansutradara atas teks sumber berpotensi mengakibatkan bias pemahaman. Penonton tidak lagimemaknai film sebagai teks visual secara objektif, tetapi juga dibarengi praduga-pradugatertentu terhadap sutradara. Pada genre film alih media, tendensi tertentu dari sutradara mudahdibaca penonton. Fakta ini mengakibatkan film sangat rentan menimbulkan kontroversi.Kata Kunci: alih media, transformasi, oposisi, kontroversi

Abstract The article presents a case study of how the use of multiple parallel texts may be employed as a useful research method in cognitive poetics, using the English version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and its four published Czech versions as the samples. In the analysis, we examine the language of space in alternative verbalizations of the same literary scene across languages (English and Czech) and within the target language (Czech), and the different mental images invoked by the different ways of verbalizing the same scene. Our analysis shows that the use of multiple parallel texts can be a helpful research method in cognitive poetics, in the sense that the method is capable of providing naturalistic and representative linguistic evidence of how languages systematically differ, even for a domain as basic as space.

Na Plachtě is located at the south-eastern edge of Hradec Králové where over the past 20 years conflicts of interests between environmentalists and local developers have arisen concerning the development and commercial use of the site. This case study is concerned with the importance of public participation in  environmental issues and describes the specific opportunities for influencing environmental decision-making. The author refers to specific events which eventually resulted in the declaration of the Na Plachtě site as a “natural monument”; she also investigates opportunities for changing the landscape plan which would strengthen  protection against any construction on the site. Other possibilities for influencing decision-making about issues of concern to the general public and which have an impact on the work of regional representatives are also discussed.

Abstract: A Walk to Remember is one of the best-selling novels written by Nicholas Spark. The novel has been translated into Indonesian language by Kathleen S.W. This paper is intended to investigate one of the equivalences of the translation: grammatical equivalence. The study used descriptive qualitative method to analyze translation in the novel. The investigation is aimed to identify strategies used to translate three grammatical features: (1) pronoun, (2) number, and (3) voice. The writers take 100 data for each feature as samples of the study. To compare voicing systems in each version of the novel, all sentences in chapter 1 are taken as samples. Based on the findings, the writers conclude that there are five strategies used in translating pronoun: (1) omitting pronoun, (2) translating pronoun as it is, (3) changing pronoun into its reference, (4) making pronoun shift, and (5) adding pronoun. Furthermore, there are two strategies used to translate singular noun with articles: (1) translating articles with lexical addition, (2) translating articles by omission, and (3) changing singular nouns in the English version of the novel into plural nouns in its Indonesian version. In terms of voice, the translator tends to keep the original voice form of the English version of the novel in its Indonesian translation. Keywords: equivalence, pronoun, number, voice Abstrak: A Walk to Remember adalah salah satu novel laris karangan Nicholas Spark. Novel ini diterjemahkan ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia oleh Kathleen S.W. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menganalisa salah satu kesetaraan penerjemahan, yakni kesetaraan tata bahasa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menganalisis penerjemahan dalam novel tersebut. Analisis ini bertujuan untuk menemukan strategi yang digunakan oleh Kathleen dalam menerjemahkan tiga fitur tata bahasa: (1) kata ganti, (2) nomina, dan (3) aktif/pasif. Penulis mengambil 100 data per fitur bahasa yang diteliti sebagai sampel dalam penelitian ini. Berdasarkan hasil analisa, peneliti menemukan bahwa terdapat lima strategi yang digunakan oleh penerjemah dalam menerjemahkan kata ganti: (1) menghilangkan kata ganti, (2) menerjemahkan kata ganti sesuai dengan aslinya, (3) mengubah kata ganti ke dalam kata benda yang digantikan, (4) mengubah kata ganti, dan (5) menambah kata ganti. Lebih lanjut, untuk menerjemahkan kata benda tunggal yang memiliki kata sandang, penerjemah menerapkan tiga strategi: (1) menerjemahkan kata sandang dengan penambahan leksikon, (2) menghilangkan kata sandang, dan (3) mengubah kata benda tunggal dalam novel versi Bahasa Inggris menjadi kata benda jamak pada versi terjemahannya. Terkait sistem aktif/pasif, penerjemah cenderung mempertahankan kalimat asli dari bahasa sumber dalam menerjemahkan novel A Walk to Remember ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia.

The main objective of the current study was to analyze a Persian Translation of a short story from functionalism perspective and Documentary vs. Instrumental Dichotomy. To this end, the Persian translation of the book titled “The Little Prince” was analyzed and compared with its English version (indirect translation from French) to see if the Persian translation was more documentary or instrumental oriented in nature. The theoretical framework of the study was Nord’s dichotomy of instrumental vs. documentary translation. The book was analyzed at the sentence and above sentence level and covered the whole book. As the qualitative analysis showed, the translation of the book was instrumental oriented, and the book reads like an original in the target language.

This essay focuses on a pivotal (if understudied) moment in the history of the translation and reception of Sanskrit erotic poetry in the West – a moment which sees the percolation of this classical poetry from the scholarly sphere to that of non-specialist literature. I argue that a crucial agent in the dissemination and inclusion of Sanskrit erotic poems in the canon of Western lyric poetry was the English poet Edward Powys Mathers (1892–1939), a self-professed second-hand translator of ‘Eastern’ literature, as well as the author of original verses, which he smuggled as translations. Using Black Marigolds (a 1919 English version of the Caurapañcāśikā) as a case study, I show how Powys Mathers’ renderings – which combined the practices of second-hand and pseudo-translation – are intertextually dense poems. On the one hand, Black Marigolds shows in watermark the intermediary French translation; on the other, it functions as a hall of mirrors which reflects, magnifies and distorts the emotional and aesthetic dimensions of both the classical/Eastern and modern/Western literary world. What does the transformation of the Caurapañcāśikā into a successful piece of modern(ist) lyric poetry tell us about the relationship that Western readers wished (and often still wish) to have with ‘Eastern’ poetry? Furthermore, which conceptual tools can we mobilize to ‘make sense’ of these non-scholarly translations of classical Sanskrit poems and ‘take seriously’ their many layers of textual and contextual meaning?
