The article reviews the use of audiovisual tools in the framework of foreign language classes. Such tools should, on the one hand, simplify the understanding and grasping of the subject, and, on the other, serve as an additional source of gaining extralinguistic skills. The authors consider a wide range of possibilities for the use of audiovisual tools while teaching Spanish to students of non-language higher education institutions of humanitarian profile. An educational film “Español extra” and a documentary devoted to the San Fermín holiday (Pamplona, Spain) are taken as an example.

The Origin and Early Years of the Slavic Institute of the Jagiellonian UniversityIn 1925, the Slavic Institute was opened at the Jagiellonian University with a view to educate experts in Slavic studies. The intention was for the studies to be interdisciplinary, it was planned to create departments not only in literary studies and linguistics, but covering a possibly wide range of disciplines. The idea of the Study was born not in the academic milieu, but among politicians. The intention was to create an institution which, on the one hand, would educate Poles about Slavdom, and on the other, would win Poland sympathizers in other countries by inviting young people from Slavic countries and making it possible for them to study in Cracow. It was also planned that Polish graduates of the Institute would be given scholarships to various Slavic countries. Another goal of the Institute was to prevent Czechoslovakia from dominating Slavdom. Due to the economic situation of Poland in late 1920s and early 1930s, the project was implemented only partially. The contribution of the Institute to the development of Slavic studies in Poland, however, is unqestionable, especially in the field of personnel education. The Institute was closed in 1951, as part of the reform of higher education that was undertaken by the communist government and destroyed the academic milieu in Poland.

In France, English has a hegemonic position in many domains, including education, despite European policy promoting linguistic and cultural diversity to better integrate citizens in democratic processes. In 2013, the Fioraso law modified the Toubon law by allowing French universities to teach in a foreign language. Under the law, the choice of English at the expense of any other foreign language seems to have become practice. However, this practice clashes with long-standing criticism of Englishization in France. In this chapter an ambivalent picture of Englishization in French higher education arises, revealing tensions between criticism and official language policy on the one hand and language practice on the other. Translingual practices in France generate a different view of Englishization in higher education

Since the introduction of the "Mammoth", the law that has reorganized our secondary school system, every elementary school pupil gets some forro of higher education. On the one hand this has in a certain sense decreased the importance of the elementary school, which used to be all the formal education the majority of Dutchman received, but on the other hand the elementary school has gained in importance as nowadays it has to prepare students for an educational system, which before long will require pupils to spend nine to ten years at school. In spite of differences of openion as to what consequences this change might have, thereis aggerment on a certain number of points, among which the position thai one has to determine for each of the different school subjects, what subject or parts of subjects belong in the elementary school programme and which ones in secondary education. Among the new subjects that for different reasons stand a good chance of being introduced in the "new style" elementary school is the teaching of a first foreign language. The reason for this is that it is felt that in the near future every Dutchman will need communicative knowledge of at least one foreign language. As attaining this goal requires time, it has been proposed to distribute the time needed for learning a foreign language over elementary and secondary schools. The bill that will be introduced to Parlement later this year will contain a paragraph on English in the elementary school. This paper gives some arguments for and against the introduction of English in the elementary school.

Although cannabis has been used for thousands of years for medical and recreational purposes, the debate on its introduction as a medical product has only recently begun. That discussion was preceded by the discovery and explanation of the active components in cannabis on the one hand, and the discovery of the endocannabinoid system in mammals on the other. Numerous studies over the past thirty years have focused on their further examination, and scarce clinical studies show the beneficial effects of cannabis on the wide spectrum of diseases. The question is why, thirty years after the discovery of the endocannabinoid system and the CB1 and CB2 receptors, as well as the positive results in cannabis administration in a wide range of diseases, extensive clinical studies and relevant explanations are still lacking. On the other hand, one may wonder if something important is being denied to patients who might find cannabis use beneficial? Therefore, it is important to analyze several different problems. What is the subject of the dispute, and which cannabis derivatives are allowed? Why do we not have relevant clinical studies, that is, all of those are of a very limited extent? How are clinical studies conducted? To whom are these derivatives intended and are there ethical dilemmas regarding their use?

Although assuming new role nowadays, the internationalization of higher education is one of the integral aspects of the organization of the university in its origin. As a complex phenomenon (MOROSINI, 2006), it has demanded an explanation of its conception and planning from the Higher Education Institutions (HEI). Moreover, it demands consistent goals and strategies that meet the institutional particularities with the purpose of promoting and valuing the development of students, teachers, researchers and administrative staff. If, on the one hand, we currently see the presence of internationalization in a large number of universities, on the other, we see the need to reflect on its meaning, assumptions, policies, actions and impacts, be it in the HEI, or at the national and international level. Considering this scenario, the objective of this special issue entitled “Internationalization in higher education: assumptions, meanings and impacts”, was to provide space for analysis and dissemination of the views on internationalization that are being processed, in contemporary times, at the institutional, national and international levels. This special issue is composed of a set of nine articles and one interview, with a wide range of reflections on the topic at hand. The variety of analyses of the texts can also be observed in the diversity of institutions and regions in which the authors work both in Brazil and abroad. In this sense, the articles in this special issue represent an important contribution to the field of Higher Education and, especially, to the scholars of internationalization.

ESP lessons in higher education develop foreign language competences of university students and prepare them for their professional lives. This paper brings views of university students on using projects in the classroom within their ESP lessons. As a part of the research through methods of focus groups, their analyses, the results and interpretations uncover positive and negative sides of using projects in ESP classroom from students’ points of views. The results show that project work on the one hand strengthens and builds responsibility for learning and thus leads towards autonomous learning as one of the educational objectives of 21st century schooling. On the other hand, the research shows that the students see themselves as they are still not ready to take over responsibility for their own learning, they do not feel competent to give presentations, feel anxious to speak a foreign language in public and do not see themselves competent enough to develop their own projects in foreign languages within the topics of their future professions even though their language level reaches B1 level according to CEFR. Interpretation of these findings show insufficient or ineffective use of projects in earlier educational level, not enough attention given to development of productive skills and confidence in a foreign language use.

The subject of this research is the current practice of the Russian evangelical congregations and associations in the area of realization of tasks on preparation of ministers and clergy members. Such activity is held within the congregations, jointly with secular universities, as well as on the premises of theological educational establishments. Wide range of options on the one hand opens opportunities for decision-making for the leaders of congregations, but on the other, substantiates restrictions and risks with regards to the quality of preparation, as well as from the perspective of applicability of particular legislative norms to the corresponding practice. As the basic approach towards solution of research tasks, the author selected the so-called methodology of soft system, which is one of the varieties of systemic analysis. This methodological direction allows reconstructing and comparing normative statutes and relevant practice within the area under consideration. The scientific novelty consists in examination of the variety of practices of preparation of ministers and clergy members within the framework of Russian evangelical churches using the resources of systemic analysis. The author was able to systematize the indicated practices, as well as determine their key characteristics necessary for making efficient administrative decisions by the leaders of congregations and educational establishments. The acquired results are also important for the development of Russian legislation in part of regulation of state-confessional relations.

Starting with the controversial esoteric employment of audio recordings by followers of the charismatic Muslim preacher Sharif Haidara in Mali, the article explores the dynamics emerging at the interface of different technologies and techniques employed by those engaging the realm of the Divine. I focus attention on the “border zone” between, on the one hand, techniques for appropriating scriptures based on long-standing religious conventions, and, on the other, audio recording technologies, whose adoption not yet established authoritative and standardized forms of practice, thereby generating insecurities and becoming the subject of heated debate. I argue that “recyclage” aptly describes the dynamics of this “border zone” because it captures the ways conventional techniques of accessing the Divine are reassessed and reemployed, by integrating new materials and rituals. Historically, appropriations of the Qur’an for esoteric purposes have been widespread in Muslim West Africa. These esoteric appropriations are at the basis of the considerable continuities, overlaps and crossovers, between scripture-related esoteric practices on one side, and the treatment by Sharif Haidara’s followers of audio taped sermons as vessels of his spiritual power, on the other.
