The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the burnout levels of music teachers and their personalities. The research consisted of 278 music teachers who were selected from various places throughout Turkey via subjective, convenience sampling method. For data collection, the ‘Personal Information Form’, ‘Adjective Based Personality Test’ and ‘Maslach Burnout Scale’ were used. The research involved both quantitative and qualitative dimensions. The data were analyzed by quantitative t-test, multiple regression analysis and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Data for the qualitative dimension of the research were obtained from semi-structured interviews conducted with 5 music teachers. Negative, significant relationships were determined between extroversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness and general burnout, while a positive, significant relationship was determined between neuroticism and general burnout. The burnout variable was found to have a statistically significant effect on the openness, neuroticism and conscientiousness dimensions of the personality types. The effects of conscientiousness and openness dimensions were not, however, found to be significant. The music teachers who had characteristics of extroversion and conscientiousness were found to have higher levels of burnout if they have the characteristics of neuroticism that reduce their exhaustion. The findings of the research show that the effect of personality types on burnout is important.

This study aims to determine the relationship between the levels of work stress and the democratic perceptions of principals and teachers. The research was conducted in public schools located in Isparta. Correlational research design is followed.Interestingly, participants’ perceptions of accountability for their superiors significantly predict the job stress levels of administrators and teachers positively. This can be interpreted as the perception of accountability increases, job stress increases. The fact that principals and teachers are supervised frequently by their managers, who gives importance to accountability, may cause pressure them. Additionally, it was observed that the perception of justice and equality significantly predicted the stress levels of teachers and administrators negatively. This finding can be interpreted that the increase in the fair attitude of the managers towards the employees and demonstrating equal behaviors cause a lower level of work stress. Moreover, the gender of principals and teachers predicted work stress significantly. It was determined that male participants’ perception of job stress was higher than female participants. However, the seniority of administrators and teachers did not significantly predict the perception of work stress. Finally, the transparency and participation dimension of the organizational democracy did not significantly predict the job stress levels of administrators and teachers. This may be a result of a centralized organizational structure.Based on the research findings, recommendations were given to reduce the work stress experienced by principals and teachers and develop a culture of democracy in educational organizations.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between job insecurity, burnout and organisational commitment of human resource workers (N = 146) in a financial institution. A cross-sectional survey design was used. The Job Insecurity Questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey, Organisational Commitment Questionnaire and a biographical questionnaire were administered. Job insecurity demonstrated a relationship with increased levels of burnout and decreased levels of organisational commitment. Job insecurity was found to hold predictive value with regard to exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy, as well as reduced affective and normative commitment (while controlling for the influence of background variables). Opsomming Die doelstelling van hierdie navorsing was om die verhouding tussen werksonsekerheid, uitbranding en organisasie verbondenheid van menslike hulpbronwerknemers (N = 146) in ’n finansiële instelling te ondersoek. ’n Dwarsneeopname-ontwerp is gebruik.

In 2008, Brazilian legislators approved a law that added music on a mandatory basis to the basic national school curriculum. Despite the possibilities afforded by this legislation, music educators affirm that many questions remain due to its ambiguity. Given the 2012 deadline for the implementation of this law, there is a need to understand how it was enacted across diverse settings. This study considers the implementation from the perspective of music teachers. Thus, in this interview study, we seek to understand the status of music education throughout the country according to the perspectives of music educators from private and public schools. Such perspectives are situated within reviews of educational history, legislation, policy, and research. Findings point toward the need to (a) address a shortage of music teachers; (b) better define the preparation of professional music educators; and (c) identify pedagogies which are likely to have the greatest impact in implementing this new law.

As educator attrition continues to plague public education in the United States, attention turns to teacher burnout as a major component of the problem. Statistics suggest that up to half of new teachers will quit the profession or leave their district within the first five years of their careers. In either case, public schools and students continue to experience negative outcomes associated with ongoing teacher turnover. The burden of the problem in Eastern Kentucky is significant, though little is published regarding the burnout experiences of Eastern Kentucky teachers. Some published research findings suggest that teacher mindfulness practice may be associated with reduced risk of burnout, which could ultimately help retain teachers. This study evaluated the relationship between teacher mindfulness and burnout with a focus on identifying factors that reduce the risk of burnout. Findings from the study indicate that the construct Intrapersonal Mindfulness can predict the level of burnout experienced by teachers in the study population. Further, Odds Ratio and Relative Risk calculations suggest that those with elevated Intrapersonal Mindfulness have reduced risk of “average” or “high” burnout and increased risk of “low” burnout. Consistent with published literature, the results also suggest that Eastern Kentucky teachers experience significantly higher levels of burnout than those in other “helping” professions. Findings from this study can be used to inform intervention studies designed to reduce the burden of burnout on teachers, districts, and students.
