Background: The present investigation of a mangrove plant, Excoecaria agallocha, which is a popular medicinal substitute for the treatment of microbial ailments, were evaluated for potential antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli and Streptococcus agalactiae in tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Methods: Antibacterial activity was performed using agar diffusion method, disc diffusion method, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and antibiotic susceptibility assays. Experimental fish fed diet containing 0 (control), 5, 25, and 50 mg kg-1 E. agallocha leaf methanol extract for 28 days then challenged individually with E. coli or S. agalactiae and mortalities were recorded over a ten-day post-infection period.  Results: Results indicated that both bacterial species are sensitive to tetracycline, ampicillin, and amoxicillin. E. coli was found to be resistant to neomycin. E. agallocha extract concentration of 50 mg/ml produced a zone of inhibition of 18 mm against E. coli, in contrast to 13 mm against S. agalactiae.  E. agallocha showed bactericidal activity against E. coli and bacteriostatic activity against S. agalactiae. The highest E. agallocha LC50 activity was 83 mg/ml. The highest cumulative mortality was 90.0 ± 10.0% in control as compared to 26.7 ± 11.5% in the group fed with 50 mg kg-1 E. agallocha extract, significant differences (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Hence, E. agallocha showed antibacterial activity against fish pathogens Escherichia coli and Streptococcus agalactiae in tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus; therefore, E. agallocha may be used as an alternative therapeutic agent against fish pathogenic bacteria as an additive to feed at a concentration depend, safe, non-cytotoxic doses.

Dumortiera hirsuta is one of the liverworts that can be used as a medicinal to prevent infection by pathogenic bacteria. The content of secondary metabolites of D. hirsuta has potential as antibacterial properties includes flavonoids, alkaloids and steroids. This research is to analyze the antibacterial activity of moss D. hirsuta against pathogenic bacteria that will be beneficial to humans. Liverworts of D. hirsuta were extracted using ethyl acetate solvent and tested against three types of pathogenic bacteria using the agar well-diffusion method. The results of this study indicated that the ethyl acetate extract of D. hirsuta at 100% concentration could inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhi bacteria. The range of antibacterial activity categories of the ethyl acetate extract of D. hirsuta to E. coli, S. aureus, and S. typhi between weak to moderate.

Starfish is one of the species of the asteroidean class, and is grouped into phylum echinoderms. Echinoderms consist of approximately 6000 species and all live in sea water. Starfish is one source bioactive compounds. Active compounds from starfish have been known to have activities antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and immunostimulatory, there are also blue starfish that are potential as antitumor and antibacterial agents. This study aims to obtain crude extracts from several types of starfish, and testing the antibacterial activity of crude starfish extracts against bacteria Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli and  Staphylococcus aureus. Test the antibacterial activity of crude starfish extracs Protoreaster nodosus, Achaster tipycus, dan Linckia laevigata against bacteria E. coli, S. aureus, dan S. agalactiae use the agar diffusion method by means of a well.  L. l extract  can inhibit bacteria e. coli at an extract concentration of 1000 mg/ml with a diameter of inhibitory zone 11.0 mm, whereas at a concentration of 750 mg/ml the test bacteria can still grow on the bacteria S. agalactiae and S. aureus can still grow even though the extract has be given  L. l Keywords: Potential Starfish, Antibacterial Activity, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus agalactiae Bintang laut merupakan salah satu spesies dari kelas Asteroidea, dan dikelompokkan kedalam filum Echinodermata. Filum Echinodermata  terdiri atas kurang lebih 6000 spesies dan semuanya hidup di air laut. Bintang laut  merupakan salah satu sumber penghasil senyawa bioaktif. Senyawa aktif dari bintang laut telah diketahui memiliki aktivitas antioksidan, antibakteri, antiinflamasi, antifungi dan imunostimulator, ada juga bintang laut biru yang potensial sebagai antitumor dan agen antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan ekstrak kasar dari beberapa jenis bintang laut, dan menguji aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak kasar bintang laut terhadap bakteri Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli dan  Staphylococcus aureus. Uji aktivitas antibakteri dari ekstrak kasar bintang laut Protoreaster nodosus, Achaster tipycus, dan Linckia laevigata terhadap bakteri E. coli, S. aureus, dan S. agalactiae mengggunakan metode difusi agar dengan cara sumur. Ekstrak L. l mampu menghambat bakteri E.coli pada konsentrasi ekstrak 1.000 mg/ml dengan diameter zona hambat 11.0 mm, sedangkan pada konsentrasi 750 mg/ml bakteri uji masih bisa bertumbuh pada bakteri S. agalactiae dan S. aureus masih dapat bertumbuh walaupun telah diberikan ekstrak L. l.Kata Kunci : Potensi Bintang Laut, Aktivitas Antibakteri, Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli and  Staphylococcus aureus

Gut microbiota of termites belonging to the species Coptotermes ceylonicus is known to contain plethora of enzymes of which cellulase is the most important among them. Cellulase was successfully extracted and isolated from the gut of these termites by using standard protocol. Cellulytic index was calculated and found to be 3.25. The extracted crude enzyme was partially purified by Dinitro Salicyclic Acid (DNS) method. Extracted cellulase enzyme was screened for antibacterial activity against two bacterial species, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) using well diffusion method. Partially purified cellulase enzyme showed effective antibacterial activity against E. coli (16 mm of zone of inhibition), however, there was no such effect observed in the B. subtilis. In this study we successfully isolated cellulase enzyme from the gut of Coptotermes ceylonicus and confirm its bactericidal effect against E. coli. Further studies are required to test the bactericidal effect of cellulase against different bacterial species.

Bioenhancers are drug facilitator which do not show the typical drug activity but in combination to enhance the activity of other molecule in several way including increase the bioavailability of drug across the membrane, potentiating the drug molecules by conformational interaction, acting as receptor for drug molecules and making target cell more receptive to drugs and promote and increase the bioactivity or bioavailability or the uptake of drugs in combination therapy. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial and activity of combination in Azadirachta indica extract with cow urine distillate and pepper extract against common pathogenic bacteria, a causative agent of watery diarrhea. It has been found that Indian indigenous cow urine and its distillate also possess bioenhancing ability. Bioenhancing role of cow urine distillate (CUD) and pepper extract was investigated on antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of Azadirachta indica. Antibacterial activity of ethanol extract neem alone and in combination with CUD and pepper extract were determined the ATCC strains against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and E-coli by cup plate diffusion method. Ethanol extract of neem has showed more effect on P. aeruginosa, E-coli than S. aureus and K. pneumonia with combination of CUD and pepper extract. CUD and pepper did not show any inhibition of test bacteria in low concentration. The antibacterial effect of combination of extract and CUD was higher than the inhibition caused by extract alone and is suggestive of the bioenhancing role of cow urine distillate and pepper. Moreover, inhibition of test bacteria was observed with less concentration of extract on combining with CUD

Cow’s milk containing pathogenic bacteria is an important threat to the consumers. The objectives of the present study were to identify the bacterial agents of public health importance in milk samples (n=35) of different locations and to determine their sensitivity to different antibiotics. The milk samples were collected and transported aseptically and subsequently allowed for culture in bacteriological media, Gram’s staining and biochemical tests for the identification of bacterial species. The bacteria identified were Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi, and their prevalence, in case of vendor milk specimens (n=28), were 96.43%, 53.57% and 35.71% respectively, and of brand milk specimens (n=7), were 42.86 %, 28.57% and 0%, respectively. This suggests that cautionary measures should be taken for quality milk production and consumption. The antibiotic sensitivity test was done by disc diffusion method and the average inhibition zones, in case of Staphylococcus aureus, were 32 mm for oxytetracycline, 26 mm for amoxicillin, 35 mm for ciprofloxacin, 27 mm for cefotaxime, 30 mm for ceftriaxone, 30 mm for azithromycin, and 26 mm for erythromycin; in case of Escherichia coli, were 5 mm for oxytetracycline, 9 mm for amoxicillin, 22 mm for ciprofloxacin, 30 mm for cefotaxime, 31 mm for ceftriaxone, 15 mm for azithromycin, and 0 mm for erythromycin; in case of Salmonella typhi., were 25 mm for oxytetracycline, 24 mm for amoxicillin, 38 mm for ciprofloxacin, 31 mm for cefotaxime, 34 mm for ceftriaxone, 24 mm for azithromycin, and 0 mm for erythromycin. Therefore, ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone may be the antibiotics of first choice, and cefotaxime and azithromycin may be the second choice among the test antibiotics for the treatment of illness caused by these bacteria.Asian J. Five compounds containing (2,4,5-triphenyl triphenyl-1H-) and azetidinone (beta-lactam) moiety were synthesized. The physical data and yield of synthesized compounds were recorded, the chemical structure of prepared compounds were characterized using FT-IR, 1H-NMR and elemental analysis. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using disc diffusion method that involve tow Gram positive (staph. aureus, E. Faecalis), two Gram negative (E. coli and ‎K. pneumoniae), and one anaerobic bacteria (streptococcus. Pyogen). Different concentration of the prepared compounds has been used, and the obtained result were compared with standard (ceftazidime). Compound (5c) showed the best antibacterial activity against all bacterial species while 5a and 5e does not. Other compounds showed activity against some species.

This study aimed to determine the effect of concentration ethanol extract from tembelakan leaf (Lantana camara Linn)  on bacteria growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Extraction was done by maceration using ethanol 96% and then separated using rotary evaporator. Antibacterial activity test of the ethanol extract by Well agar diffusion method. Variation in crude extract saponin used in this study was 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and positive controls were used for comparison with Amoxicilin and Chloramphenicole concentration of 25 µg/mL and DMSO as a negative control. The results of antibacterial activity test is indicated by the formation of growth inhibitory region S. aureus and E. coli. The result of growth inhibitory regions was analyzed by One way ANOVA. One way ANOVA test results indicate that there are effects of ethanol extract concentration of tembelekan leaf (L. camara Linn) against S. aureus and E. coli. Effective concentration of ethanol extract tembelekan leaf (L. camara Linn) when compared with positive control to inhibit the growth of S. aureus and E. coli is at 25% with a relatively strong antibacterial activity. Test with phytochemicals screening method which is showed that tembelekan leaf contains the flavanoid, saponins, and tannins compounds as antibacterial

The study was undertaken to investigate the antimicrobial activity both individually and in combination of two Nigerian plants (Azadirachta indica and Dodonea viscosa) against a variety of pathogenic bacteria. Five bacterial species namely; Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were selected for the assays. The powdered plant materials of the two plants were extracted using sohxlet extraction technique with methanol water and petroleum ether as solvents. The crude extracts of the two plants were subjected to phytochemical screening for qualitative detection of plant secondary metabolites. The extracts were further tested for antibacterial activity against the selected pathogens singly and then combined using agar well diffusion method. Antibacterial activity of the two plants singly indicates that the methanolic extract possess the highest antibacterial activity at a concentration of 50mg/ml with an inhibition zone of 23.3±0.5mm compared to aqueous extract with 21.7±0.5mm inhibition zone at a concentration of 50mg/ml. The least activity was observed with the petroleum ether extract with an inhibition zone of 7.3±0.5mm at a concentration of 12.5mg/ml. Combination of the plants extracts exhibited lower antibacterial activity on the test isolates compared to single plants as evidenced by the production of lower inhibition zones. Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the antibacterial effect of endophytic fungi originated from the root of mangrove Rhizophora stylosa growing on Mangrove Plantation Area around DAS Simpang 5 Jl. Piere Tendean Manado. The method of this research was using combination of PDA and NA media. Two species of endophytic fungi were extracted from the root of R. stylosa, black mycelium fungi as isolate A and brown mycelium fungi as isolate B. The activities of both isolates were tested against pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The result showed the same inhibition zone of isolate A and B to S. aureus, while, isolate A showed bigger the inhibition zone in comparison to isolate B against E. coli. As a conclusion, the endophytic fungi taken from the root of R. stylosa have antibacterial activity toward S. aureus and E. coli. Piere Tendean Manado. Metode penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan kombinasi media Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) dan Nutrient Agar (NA). Dari akar bakau R. stylosa diperoleh dua  jenis jamur endofit yaitu isolat A dengan karateristik miselium jamur berwarna hitam dan isolat B yang dengan karakteristik miselium berwarna coklat. Kedua isolat ini selanjutnya diujikan aktivitasnya terhadap bakteri Staphylococcus aureus dan Escherichia coli. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan isolat A dan B memberikan  zona hambat yang sama terhadap bakteri Staphylococcus aureus dan pada bakteri Escherichia coli isolat A menunjukkan diameter zona hambat yang lebih besar dibandingkan isolat B. Kesimpulan, Jamur endofit yang diisolasi dari akar bakau R. Stylosa memiliki efek antibakteri terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri S. aureus dan E. coli. Kata kunci: jamur endofit, Rhizophopra stylosa, antibakteri, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli.

ABSTRACT Sponges are one source of producing bioactive components from the sea. Bacteria Symbiosis with sponges are thought to have the potential to produce bioactive compounds that have been isolated from sponges. One of the potential of bioactive compounds which have been found and developed from sponges was antibacterial. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of bacteria associated with Phyllospongia lamellose sponges against pathogenic bacteria namely Staphylococcus aureus and Esherichia coli and then proceed with identification of biochemistry in isolates which showed the greatest inhibitory activity. Three isolates of sponges symbiont bacteria were obtained through the isolation and purification stage which were then followed by testing of antibacterial activity with paper disk diffusion method. The antibacterial test results showed the diameter of the inhibitory zone against Staphylococcus aureus, were: SL1(8.67 mm), SL2 (9.33 mm) and SL3(9.00 mm) categorized as medium. Whereas the inhibiotion zone shown on Esherichia coli bacteria is also classified as medium, were: SL1(9.67 mm), SL2 (9.00 mm) and SL3 (9.33 mm). The three isolates continued to the identification stage biochemically. Each isolation was assumed as follows: Desulfotomaculum (SL1), Brochothrix (SL2) and Sulfidobacillus (SL3). Keyword         :Phyllospongia lamellose, isolation, biochemically identification ABSTRAK Spons merupakan salah satu sumber penghasil komponen bioaktif yang berasal dari laut. Bakteri yang bersimbiosis dengan spons diduga memiliki potensi dalam menghasilkan senyawa-senyawa bioaktif yang telah diisolasi dari spons. Potensi senyawa bioaktif yang telah ditemukan dan dikembangkan dari spons salah satunya ialah sebagai antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antibakteri dari bakteri yang berasosiasi dengan spons Phyllospongia lamellose terhadap bakteri patogen yakni Staphylococcus aureus dan Escherichia coli dan kemudian dilanjutkan dengan identifikasi secara biokimia pada isolat yang menunjukkan daya hambat terbesar. Diperoleh 3 isolat bakteri simbion spons melalui tahap isolasi dan purifikasi yang kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pengujian aktivitas antibakteri melalui metode difusi kertas cakram. Hasil uji antibakteri menunjukkan diameter zona hambat terhadap bakteri Staphylococcus aureus yaitu: SL1(8.67 mm), SL2(9.33 mm) dan SL3 (9.00 mm) termasuk dalam kategori sedang. Sedangkan zona hambat yang ditunjukkan terhadap bakteri Escherichia coli juga tergolong kategori sedang yaitu: SL1(9.67 mm), SL2(9.00 mm) dan SL3 (9.33 mm). Ketiga isolat dilanjutkan ke tahap identifikasi secara biokimia. Masing-masing isolat diduga sebagai berikut: Desulfotomaculum (SL1), Brochothrix (SL2) dan Sulfidobacillus (SL3). Kata kunci          :Phyllospongia lamellose, isolasi, identifikasi biokimia.
