Infertility is one of the most significant public health-related concerns globally. Both male and female factors can cause it. Male factors include poor sperm quality, idiopathic oligospermia, asthenozoospermia, and isolated asthenozoospermia. Many substances, collectively known as nutraceuticals, have been studied for their capacity to enhance hormonal state and sperm parameters through different mechanisms. Nutraceuticals are components in dietary supplements prescribed to prevent or treat a wide range of diseases. This article aims to highlight certain nutrients that can help improve male fertility based on recent advancements in the management of male infertility.

Abstract Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is a significant public health emergency that impacts all sectors of healthcare. The negative health outcomes for the COVID-19 infection have been most severe in the frail elderly dwelling in Canadian long-term care (LTC) homes.Methods: An online cross-sectional survey of Ontario LTC Clinicians working in LTC homes in Ontario Canada was conducted to provide the LTC clinician perspective on the preparedness and engagement of the LTC sector during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey questionnaire was developed in collaboration with the Ontario Long-Term Care Clinicians organization (OLTCC) and was distributed between March 30, 2020 to May 25, 2020. All registered members of the OLTCC and Nurse-led LTC Outreach Teams were invited to participate. The primary outcomes were: 1) the descriptive report of the screening measures implemented, communication and information received, and the preparation of the respondent’s LTC home to a potential COVID-19 outbreak; and 2) the level of agreement, as reported using a five-point Likert scale), to COVID-19 preparedness statements for the respondent’s LTC home was also assessed.Results: The overall response rate was 54% (160/294). LTC homes implemented a wide range of important interventions (e.g. instituting established respiratory isolation protocols, active screening of new LTC admissions, increasing education on infection control processes, encouraging sick staff to take time off, etc). Ample communications pertinent to the pandemic were received from provincial LTC organizations, the government and public health officials. However, the feasibility of implementing public health recommendations, as well as the engagement of the LTC sector in pandemic planning were identified as areas of concern. Medical director status was associated with an increased knowledge of local implementation of interventions to mitigate COVID-19, as well as endorsing increased access to reliable COVID-19 information and resources to manage a potential COVID-19 outbreak in their LTC home.Conclusions: This study highlights the communication to and implementation of recommendations in the Ontario LTC sector, despite some concerns regarding feasibility. Importantly, LTC clinician respondents clearly indicated that better engagement with LTC leaders is needed to plan a coordinated pandemic response.

Abstract The pervasiveness of lead in drinking water poses a significant public health threat, which can be reduced by implementing preventive measures. However, the causes of elevated lead in water and the benefits of lead in water avoidance strategies are often misunderstood. Based on experiences in the United States, this paper describes an oversimplified ‘lead in water equation’ to explain key variables controlling the presence of lead in drinking water to better inform public health practitioners, government officials, utility personnel, and concerned residents. We illustrate the application of the equation in Flint, Michigan and explore the primary household-level water lead avoidance strategies recommended during the crisis, including flushing, filtration, bottled water use, and lead pipe removal. In addition to lead reduction, strategies are evaluated based on costs and limitations. While these lead avoidance strategies will reduce water lead to some degree, the costs, limitations, and effectiveness of these strategies will be site- and event-specific. This paper presents a simplified approach to communicate key factors which must be considered to effectively reduce waterborne lead exposures for a wide range of decision makers. Abstract This paper examines the role of corporations in the creation and utilisation of think tanks, lobby ventures and front groups, both nationally and internationally. It examines how these were implicated in the introduction of neoliberalism in the 1970s/80s. It briefly tells the story of the development of the Mont Pelerin Society and how its acolytes 'littered the world' with free market think tanks which then did battle in the struggle to introduce neoliberalism. It examines how this led to the 'disembedding' (Polanyi 1944) of political and economic elites from society via the rise and maturation of a wide range of intermediary institutions and organisations including three main kinds of groups: National and transnational policy planning groups; Think tanks and think tank networks; lobbying and public relations consultancies. This part of the paper concludes by examining the role of those industrial sectors that have had the most significant Public Health footprint in the neoliberal revolution, in each of the three kinds of groups mentioned above. The paper then turns to the concrete advantages that these ongoing changes gave specific corporate actors with negative public health effects

Male infertility is one important factor among the multifactorial causes of couple infertility, being oxidative stress one of the main related sources. Sperm is a specialized cell extremely susceptible to stress. To understand and mitigate this event, many studies have used different antioxidants, orally or in vitro supplementation, trying to improve sperm quality and function. Considering the extensive available literature regarding approaches and attempts to solve male fertility issues, the aim of this review is evaluating the effects of antioxidant supplementation on sperm, in both humans and experimental models with animals. This review selected original data from PubMed. The keywords used were: antioxidant, sperm, male fertility, antioxidant supplementation, male infertility; and the term "rodents" was added to the descriptors “antioxidant” and “male fertility”. Only studies published in indexed journals, in English, between 2015 and 2019 were included. This review involves i) human sperm and ii) rodent sperm. For the human approach, the search retrieved 496 articles and 80 were included, among which 28 studies were of in vitro antioxidant supplementation, 19 involved oral antioxidant supplementation and the remaining 33 concerned quantification of oxidants and antioxidants already present in the seminal samples. For the rodent approach, 152 articles were retrieved and 52 were included: 3 of varicocele, 11 of diabetes, 10 of therapeutic drugs, 3 of physical exercise, 10 of environmental exposure and 3 of heat stress. The remaining studies involved oxidative stress status in experimental models. Antioxidants use for reproductive purposes is increasing in an attempt to achieve better gametes and embryos. Vitamins C, B and E, selenium and zinc are the most commonly used antioxidants, with remarkable evidences in improving pathophysiological seminal conditions.

Infertility is defined as a couple’s inability to conceive after at least one year of regular unprotected intercourse. This condition has become a global health problem affecting approximately 187 million couples worldwide and about half of the cases are attributable to male factors. Oxidative stress is a common reason for several conditions associated with male infertility. High levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) impair sperm quality by decreasing motility and increasing the oxidation of DNA, of protein and of lipids. Multi-antioxidant supplementation is considered effective for male fertility parameters due to the synergistic effects of antioxidants. Most of them act by decreasing ROS concentration, thus improving sperm quality. In addition, other natural molecules, myo-inositol (MI) and d-chiro–inositol (DCI), ameliorate sperm quality. In sperm cells, MI is involved in many transduction mechanisms that regulate cytoplasmic calcium levels, capacitation and mitochondrial function. On the other hand, DCI is involved in the downregulation of steroidogenic enzyme aromatase, which produces testosterone. In this review, we analyze the processes involving oxidative stress in male fertility and the mechanisms of action of different molecules.

Abstract Background: Overwhelming evidences now suggest oxidative stress is a major cause of sperm dysfunction and male infertility. Zinc is an important non-enzyme antioxidant with a wide range of biological functions and plays a significant role in preserving male fertility. Notably, zinc trafficking through the cellular and intracellular membrane is endorsed by precise families of zinc transporters, i.e. SLC39s/ZIPs and SLC30s/ZnTs. However, the expression and function of zinc transporters in the male germ cells were rarely reported. The aim of this study is to determine the crucial zinc transporter responsible for the maintenance of spermatogenesis.Methods: In the present study, we investigated the expression of all fourteen ZIP members in mouse testis and further analyzed the characteristic of ZIP12 expression in testis and spermatozoa by qRT-PCR, immunoblot and immunohistochemistry analyses. To explore the antioxidant role of ZIP12 in spermatogenesis, an obese mouse model fed with high-fat-diet was employed to confirm the correlation between ZIP12 expression level and sperm quality. Furthermore, ZIP12 expression in response to oxidative stress in a spermatogonia cell line, C18-4 cells, was determined and its function involved in regulating cell viability and apoptosis was investigated by RNAi experiment. Results: We initially found that ZIP12 expression in mouse testis was significantly high compared to other members of ZIPs and its mRNA and protein were intensively expressed in testis rather than the other tissues. Importantly, ZIP12 was intensively abundant in spermatogonia and spermatozoa, both in mice and humans. Moreover, ZIP12 expression in testis significantly decreased in obese mice, which associated with reduced sperm zinc content, excessive sperm ROS, poor sperm quality and male subfertility. Similarly, its expression in C18-4 cells significantly declined in response to oxidative stress. Additionally, reduced ZIP12 expression by RNAi associated with a decline in zinc level subsequently caused low cell viability and high cell apoptosis in C18-4 cells. Conclusions: The zinc transporter ZIP12 is intensively expressed in testis, especially in spermatogonia and spermatozoa. ZIP12 may play a key role in maintaining intracellular zinc level in spermatogonia and spermatozoa, by which it resists oxidative stress during spermatogenesis and therefore preserves male fertility.

Socio-economic variations in health exist for a wide range of health outcomes, including oral health and oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Less is known regarding how socio-economic trajectories may influence oral health and OHRQoL. This study examined whether social mobility is related to the number of teeth retained by age 50 years and OHRQoL measured at the same time, using data from the Newcastle Thousand Families Study, a birth cohort established in 1947. Women remaining in the non-manual class had the greatest tooth retention. While promotion of a healthier lifestyle and continued improvements in oral hygiene throughout life appear to be the public health interventions most likely to improve oral health into middle age, there may be sub-groups of the population on which different approaches in terms of public health interventions need to be focused.
