A sound’s unique timbre is based on the various harmonic frequencies present within its waveform. Through Fast Fourier Transform software, waveforms can be easily decomposed into their component frequencies and a spectral analysis of frequency can be conducted as a method of quantitatively describing timbral characteristics of a sound. In this investigation, the range of frequencies present in a spectrum as well as the average intensity of the first 10 overtones in a sound will be used to classify the timbres of various instruments relative to one another. This will be done by generating a Range-Intensity graph of harmonic frequencies present in sound samples of each instrument. The results of this investigation reveal that it is not only possible to quantitatively analyze instrumental timbre by generating and mapping out the harmonic frequency data of a specific sound, but that such a quantitative analysis is also incredibly useful. Unlike the traditional, qualitative method of describing timbre, a quantitative analysis would allow for timbral qualities to be transformed into information that can be understood by computers. Today, timbral classification and the decomposition of waveforms has many applications in science and sound engineering. By refining methods for quantitative timbral analysis, it becomes possible to further enhance timbre recognition software and apply such methods to a wider range of technological developments.

Smartphone is the manifestation of the technological developments that can narrow space and time. Smartphone is not only used as a means of communication but as a means of entertainment for many kinds of applications that is presented by the developers. Android is an operating system that is widely used by several manufacturers of smartphones today. Application is a program which is designed to perform a function with specific goals and purposes. Tanjidor is the musical art of Betawi. Tanjidor did not come originally from Indonesia, but from Portuguese language in a word Tangedor which means “stringed musical instruments”. Tanjidor itselfis played in several musical instruments category, namely wind instruments (in particular instrument it is called as mouthpiece) like clarinet, trombone, tuba, saxophone, and trumpet. In addition, there is also wind instrument musical which played by hit it (in a particular type it is called a percussion), like snare drum, tenor drum, bass drum, cymbals and drums. Android-based Tanjidor equipment learning application is used as the entertainment media and also aims to preserve the Indonesian art heritage by inserting Tanjidor instruments in Android smartphon. Therefore, Tanjidor musical art does not disappear over the time.

In this paper, we attempt musical analysis by measuring fractal dimension (D) of musical pieces played by several musical instruments. We collected solo performances of popular instruments of Western and Eastern origin as samples. We attempted usual spectral analysis of the selected clips to observe peaks of fundamental and harmonics in frequency regime. After appropriate processing, we converted them into time series data sets and computed their fractal dimension. Based on our results, we conclude that instrumental musical sounds may have higher Ds than those computed from vocal performances of different types of Indian songs.

The low frequency (LF) spectral analysis or ‘rhythm spectrum’ approach to the quantitative analysis and comparison of speech rhythms is extended beyond syllable or word rhythms to ‘rhetorical rhythms’ in read-aloud narratives, in a selection of exploratory scenarios, with the aim of developing a unified theory of speech rhythms. Current methodologies in the field are first discussed, then the choice of data is motivated and the modulation-theoretic rhythm spectrum and rhythm spectrogram approach is applied to the amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) of speech. New concepts of rhythm formant, rhythm spectrogram and rhythm formant trajectory are introduced in the Rhythm Formant Theory (RFT) framework with its associated methodology Rhythm Formant Analysis (RFA) in order to capture second order regularities in the temporal variation of rhythms. The interaction of AM and FM rhythm factors is explored, contrasting English with Mandarin Chinese. The LF rhythm spectrogram is introduced in order to recover temporal information about long-term rhythms, and to investigate the configurative function of rhythm. The trajectory of highest magnitude frequencies through the component spectra of the LF spectrogram is extracted and applied in classifying readings in different languages and individual speaking styles using distance-based hierarchical clustering, and the existence of long-term second order ‘rhythms of rhythm’ in long narratives is shown. In the conclusion, pointers are given to the extension of this exploratory RFT rhythm approach for future quantitative confirmatory investigations.
