Children’s ministry leaders who evaluate which curriculum to use for their Sunday school quickly discern vast differences in curriculum design philosophy. In spite of calls for integration, the debate between content-centered and learner-centered children’s Sunday school curricula has not been settled. This article examines a foundational doctrine of the Reformation, the doctrine of Sola Scriptura, in order to apply it to the design and evaluation of children’s Sunday school curricula. After briefly describing the meaning of Sola Scriptura, the article details the implications of Sola Scriptura for children’s Sunday school curriculum design. It then offers an evaluative grid for children’s ministry leaders to use when evaluating curriculum.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus has posed different kinds of challenges to society and churches over the past months. With various ‘normal ministry practices’ not permitted under lockdown regulations, as well as people starting to fear the effect of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a sense of crisis can easily prevail. However, a small congregation in Bloemfontein, South Africa, responded by engaging their children and teenagers through reflection, content and outreach. Various methods, including virtual and face to face, were utilised to minister to and with children and teenagers. This response can now be analysed to find answers to the following questions: How did the pandemic influence specific methods chosen for faith formation? What made it different from ‘ministry as usual’? What role did the Bible play in the methods and content used? Within the framework of the qualitative research, reflective practice from a hermeneutic perspective was utilised as theoretical approach to analyse the response of the pastors and Sunday school teachers. Reflection occurs on three levels, namely, technical (efficiency and effectiveness), practical (goals and consequences) and critical (analysis of one’s practice within wider contexts). A literature study was also conducted on the influence of a pandemic on faith formation. Recommendations were made regarding different ways to engage with children and teenagers and involving them in ministry.Contribution: This research contributes to knowledge as to how and why pastors and congregations react the way they do in a pandemic and how this impacts upon faith formation among children and youth in the faith community.

This chapter puts theory and research in curriculum, leadership, and early childhood teaching in dialogue to consider possibilities for early childhood curriculum leadership. Structures of macro-curriculum design and micro-curricular approaches to curriculum implementation elucidated conceptual orientations, political interests, and processes involved in curriculum leadership. By building off of the strengths, while also recognizing the limitations of disparate factions of curriculum studies, the chapter concludes with a vision for democratic curriculum leadership. Democratic curriculum leadership simultaneously embraces critical awareness and pragmatic artistry to elevate the professional integrity of early childhood teachers. For these reasons, early childhood curriculum leadership has the potential to democratize early education, elevating teachers to the status of lead professionals who balance various and sometimes competing obligations of teaching young children.

Chapter 6 is a detailed study of Sunday schools as sites of pedagogical practice in India. Guided by “tact” as a principle of conducting their work, Anglo-American Protestant missionaries, in order to secure and retain enrollment in their Sunday schools, jettisoned or substantially modified a number of clearly held Christian principles. They denounced racism, but closely allied themselves with a colonial militarist power that would not brook racial integration, and correspondingly instituted racial segregation in their Sunday schools. A second manifestation of “tact” was their borrowing of a number of schooling and cultural practices of the “idolatrous” Hindus, resulting in a type of Christian institution that began to look casteized even to Christian observers. Highly Sanskritized Sunday school hymns, Hindu religious musical forms, visual arts, and festive observances were made a part of the Christian Sunday school. All this benefited a number of Christian converts from the “lower castes” of Hindu society, inasmuch as they were able to acquire those symbolic resources traditionally denied them by the “upper castes.” But at the same time, the mimicking of such practices by Christian institutions underscored the prestige that certain Hindu traditions enjoyed. Also, and worryingly for missionaries, the “upper castes” began to organize their own Sunday schools without Christian doctrine, but mimicking elements of Anglicized, Christian Sunday schools that had seemed attractive to them to begin with. Further, to counter competition, missionaries expanded the Sunday school curriculum, but in the process mimicked secular institutions and undermined the evangelical thrust of their program. And finally, to solicit funds back home, missionaries sensationalized accounts of their work in India. Instrumental reasoning pervaded all aspects of their management of Sunday schools.
