To properly manage urban forests, it is essential to have data on this important resource. An efficient means to obtain this information is to randomly sample urban areas. To help assess the urban forest structure (e.g., number of trees, species composition, tree sizes, health) and several functions (e.g., air pollution removal, carbon storage and sequestration), the Urban Forest Effects (UFORE) model was developed. Data collection variables and model methods are detailed and urban forest structure results are compared among 14 United States cities with average tree density ranging between 22.5 trees/ha (9.1 trees/ac) in Casper, Wyoming, U.S. to 275.8 trees/ha (111.6 trees/ac) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. Advantages and disadvantages of this ground-based method of assessing urban forest structure, functions, and values are discussed.

Abstract The evaluation of ecosystem services can provide essential help in incorporatating the multifunctionality of urban ecosystems in planning and management processes. Two important regulating services of urban trees, carbon sequestration and air pollution removal, are evaluated in this article for different types of tree stands (streets, parks) in the city centre of Szeged (Hungary). The necessary calculations were carried out by an adaptation of the targeted model (i-Tree Eco), based on a large complete tree inventory dataset. The analyses revealed the main tendencies in differences between tree species considering the tree condition, which affects the service-providing capacity to a high degree. The effects of differences in tree management on the chosen ecosystem services were investigated by comparing two pairs of tree alleys. Based on our observations, clear cuts and complete tree alley changes are not advisable from an ecosystem service point of view.

Urban ecosystem services (ES) contribute to the compensation of negative effects caused by cities by means of, for example, reducing air pollution and providing cooling effects during the summer time. In this study, an approach is described that combines the regional biotope and land use data set, hemeroby and the accessibility of open space in order to assess the provision of urban ES. Hemeroby expresses the degree of naturalness of land use types and, therefore, provides a differentiated assessment of urban ES. Assessment of the local capacity to provide urban ES was conducted with a spatially explicit modeling approach in the city of Halle (Saale) in Germany. The following urban ES were assessed: (a) global climate regulation, (b) local climate regulation, (c) air pollution control, (d) water cycle regulation, (e) food production, (f) nature experience and (g) leisure activities. We identified areas with high and low capacity of ES in the urban context. For instance, the central parts of Halle had very low or no capacity to provide ES due to highly compact building styles and soil sealing. In contrast, peri-urban areas had particularly high capacities. The potential provision of regulating services was spatially limited due to the location of land use types that provide these services.

Air pollution gives negative effects to humans as well as to plants which are exposed all throughout the day in these pollutants. Assessment of plants' response to air pollutants may serve as a fundamental method in terms of environmental monitoring and management. Sensitive group of plants can serve as an indicator of air quality while the tolerant ones can be sinks. TheAir Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI) of selected plant species in Puerto Princesa City, namely: Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spectabilis), Santan (Ixoracoccinea), Fire Tree (Delonixregia), Golden Bush (Durantarepens), and Acacia tree (Samaneasaman)were evaluatedusing relative water content, ascorbic acid content, leaf extract pH, and total leaf chlorophyll content.It was found out that B. spectabiliswas the most tolerant species, followed by S. samanwhile D. regiahas an intermediate index. D. repensand I. coccineaon the other hand were found to be sensitive plant species. Plants with high APTI values are the tolerant ones and are recommended to be planted in urban areas to absorb and off certain harmful gaseous pollutants while the sensitive ones have the potential to serve as bio-indicators for evaluation and monitoring.

The air basin of cities is subjected to considerable pollution, including waste gases generated during the production of thermal and electric energy by power plants. However, power plants are an indispensable element of the life support system on urban areas and they can not be taken out of the city, that means minimizing losses, both material and energy. Therefore, the problem of the correct choice of structural elements and operating characteristics of the process and a system for reducing air pollution is becoming very important. The paper analyzes the most well-known and practical scientific approaches to the selection of optimal measures to reduce air pollution, their advantages and disadvantages are revealed. The authors have singled out the physical and energetic approach as the most acceptable one. The approach is based on the theory of dispersed systems stability, the analysis of the main provisions which allowed us to systematize the parameters of properties, energy parameters and stability of gaseous pollutants formed during the operation of power plants and to construct a scheme for the transformation of gaseous pollutants for the process of reducing air pollution has been performed. At the same time, stability is the resultant criterion characterizing the gaseous pollutants behavior.

Urban forests are one of the most important parts in urban areas. With urban physical development that continues to occur makes it difficult and expensive to add urban forests. Whereas urban forests have important benefits for urban communities, such as providing a balance to ecosystems, as water catchment areas, and being a place of carbondioxide to oxygen cycles. One of the urban forests in Jakarta is Hutan Kota Srengseng. In this research, we want to find out whether Hutan Kota Srengseng meets the criteria so that it is worth mentioning as an urban forest. The method used in this research is qualitative, field observations and literature studies. The results of this study will find out the ecosystem services provided by the Hutan Kota Srengseng and the potential that exists in the Hutan Kota Srengseng so that they can make optimal plans for developing and managing Hutan Kota Srengseng in the future. Keywords: Ecosystem Services; Urban; Urban ForestAbstrak Hutan kota merupakan salah satu bagian terpenting di perkotaan. Pada penelitian kali ini ingin mengetahui apakah Hutan Kota Srengseng telah memenuhi kriteria sehingga layak disebut sebagai sebuah hutan kota. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah kualitatif, observasi lapangan dan studi literatur. Hasil penelitian ini akan mengetahui layanan ekosistem yang diberikan oleh Hutan Kota Srengseng dan potensi yang ada di Hutan Kota Srengseng sehingga dapat membuat rencana pengembangan dan pengelolaan Hutan Kota Srengseng yang optimal kedepannya.
