Information and communications technologies (ICTs) are an invaluable tool to facilitate meaningful learning. In this work, a webinar program (‘Electrónica enREDada’) is presented that complements the teaching-learning process in selected courses of electronics in degree and master studies in Physics. These webinars allow an innovative approach to the study of specialized topics, improving the training of the student and promoting his/her scientific knowledge in the field of electronics by means of specific and informative modules. This learning activity is part of a comprehensive strategy towards the implementation of e-learning activities in all courses taught at the Electronics area. This learning activity consists of two webinar modules: one being of a synchronous nature and specialized contents, and the other one of an asynchronous nature and featuring distributed learning, which is intended not only for students of physics but also of other related degrees.

Information and communications technologies (ICTs) are an invaluable tool to facilitate and promote meaningful learning. Numerous higher education institutions have already adopted the use of virtual learning environments, incorporating e-learning along with traditional teaching methodologies as part of a mixed learning. M-learning maintains all the advantages of e-learning while adding the possibility of learning anywhere and anytime. This work presents an enhanced book in Electronics that contains a set of multimedia resources (images, videos, and apps) that have been specifically created to stimulate an adapted and interactive learning. The material presented in this work has been designed to be downloadable to mobile devices (smartphones and tables) running iOS and Android.

<p>Preventive confinement against COVID-19 changed the teaching-learning process of the Phytopathology course at the Faculty of Agronomy of the UCR. Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) were integrated into a program called ‘Phytopathology 2020, at the distance but together’. Each student received at her home a box of materials, including culture media and a paper microscope, that allowed her to set up and carry out different phytopathological techniques. The result obtained exceeded expectations and previous results in 16 years of teaching experience. The integration of the family into the educational project was surprising, fostering values of mutual commitment in education and prevention of COVID-19.</p>

Using open software in e-learning application is one of the most popular ways of improving effectiveness of e-learning-based processes without thinking about additional costs and even focusing on modifying the software according to needs. Because of that, it is important to have an idea about what is needed while using an e-learning-oriented open software system and how to deal with its source codes. At this point, it is a good option to add some additional features and functions to make the open source software more intelligent and practical to make both teaching-learning experiences during e-learning processes. In this context, the objective of this chapter is to discuss some possible applications of artificial intelligence to include optimization processes within open source software systems used in e-learning activities. In detail, the chapter focuses more on using swarm intelligence and machine learning techniques for this aim and expresses some theoretical views for improving the effectiveness of such software for a better e-learning experience.

This article presents research findings from a study conducted at Telenor, a Norwegian telecom operator. The company distributed home Personal Computers (PCs) to their employees in an effort to encourage professional development outside working hours and mainly on an individual basis. The report includes results from a systematic survey of 2500 employees of the approximately 11,000 home-PC users concerning their use of home-PCs for learning. Findings suggest that home-PCs can contribute positively to increasing employees' knowledge about information and communications technology (ICT), and improve specific user skills. While the use of home PCs can also enable employees to learn while using information and communications technologies, the number of employees who actually do so is modest.

This paper reports the findings of a research using marks of students in learning activities of an online module to build a predictive model of performance for the final assessment of the module. The objectives were (1) to compare the performances of students of two cohorts in terms of continuous learning assessment marks and final learning activity marks and (2) to model their final performances from their learning activities forming the continuous assessment using predictive analytics and regression analysis. The findings of this study combined with other findings as reported in the literature demonstrate that the learning design is an important factor to consider with respect to application of learning analytics to improve teaching interventions and students' experiences. Furthermore, to maximise the efficiency of learning analytics in eLearning environments, there is a need to review the way offline activities are to be pedagogically conceived so as to ensure that the engagement of the learner throughout the duration of the activity is effectively monitored.

Background and Objectives: Due to Covid-19 lockdown period undergraduate medical institutions across the country are moving towards e-learning for continuity of education. The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions of students towards e-learning and to analyze medical students’ perception on e-learning vs. conventional learning. Materials and Method: This was a descriptive cross sectional study conducted by distributing an online semi-structured questionnaire consisting Likert scale to undergraduate medical students of Kathmandu Medical College. Data assembled from the survey were analyzed and Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) 24 version software was used for data analysis. Result: A total of 273 students were enrolled in this study. Most of the students, 83.9% (229) had the perception that conventional teaching method was the best method for learning as compared to e-learning method 16.1% (44). The students mentioned that conventional method of learning is more effective to increase knowledge than e -learning (M= 3.87, M= 2.80) which was statistically significant (p=0.000). Conclusion: E-learning was the only option for students to study during lockdown period. But students preferred conventional method of learning as compared to e-learning. It might be due to some disadvantages of e-learning, eg. Technical difficulties, lack of interaction with teacher  and patients, etc. So, these measures have to be addressed for improving e-learning for betterment of teaching-learning activity during these types of circumstances in future.

English for Specific Purposes (IFE) textbooks are an important tool in the teaching-learning process of English. The purpose of this study was to identify the preferences of the learning activities included in an IFE textbook that the students of Hospitality and Tourism. The sample was 97 students. The survey was structured by abilities in listening comprehension, reading, writing, among others, for the analysis the LT-Lab software was applied divided into six groups according to their abilities. The results showed: group 1 the preferred learning activities: videos, web sources and songs; group 2, use of grammar, vocabulary, games, reading comprehension; group 3, role-playing games, dialogues, vocabulary and description; group 4, in the videos; group 5, readings and web sources, group 6, read, complete the sentences and crossword puzzles. In conclusion, the learning activity included in an ESP textbook preferred by the students were videos, web sources, songs, use of grammar, vocabulary, among others.

Abstract The paper focuses on the analysis of the organizations in the tourism sector, in particular, the travel agencies in the state of Queretaro, México, through a modern and flexible perspective that comes from the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) and it reviews how these agencies have expanded as organizations and what have been the effects on their processes. The investigation is based on a qualitative study that allows to realize the lack of awareness of the owners and companies’ managers on the influence of technology in their businesses. They are aware of the two main advantages that they have in order to compete with online businesses: first, the information they provide first hand to their customers and secondly, the safety it gives to their clients by purchasing at an established agency. On the other hand, they are not aware of the low financial investment (such as in the use of social networking) and the high acceptance of technology by consumers. As a result it is of extreme importance to provide training that allows the opportunity for change, which is increasingly necessary due to the overwhelming competition from online agencies.

<span>This article analyses how journalism professors at Colombian universities use information and communications technologies (ICT) in their teaching. Survey data was obtained during the first trimester of 2009 from 63 professors in journalism departments and from a total of 865 professors who are affiliated with journalism departments at 29 universities that belong to the Colombian Association of Journalism Departments and University Programs. These professors have, until now, replicated traditional teaching methods when employing currently available technological resources. The article discusses the factors that influence the teaching uses of ICT and the implementing of pedagogical strategies in the classroom. The results help define the profiles of professors in academic programs in which ICT use is limited, and factors such as investment of time and resources which determine the productive use of ICTs, as well as the implementation of pedagogical models related to new teaching-learning opportunities in the classrooms at Colombian universities.</span>

This chapter focuses on a specific field of e-learning: the relationship between general didactical patterns to design teaching/learning processes on the one hand and empirical behavioral patterns of users (navigational paths) on the other hand. It is based on empirical research on the usage of a hypertextual on-line learning environment. The analyzed dataset consists of about 1500 paths containing about 4700 pages. These empirical navigational paths are analyzed in order to identify similar paths (patterns, structures and regularities), following a heuristic and inductive approach. This approach is based on the method of sequence analysis (optimal matching). The aggregation of similar paths into homogeneous groups will be discussed, as well as the identification of patterns within these aggregated groups. The inductively identified empirical patterns will be compared to deductive, theory-driven patterns. Empirical results will be presented which show the variety and complexity of empirical navigational paths and their relation to theory-driven patterns. These results will be located and discussed in a pedagogical-didactical context.
