Species delimitation is the process of determining whether a group of sampled individuals belong to the same species or to different species. The criteria used to delimit species differ across taxonomic groups, and the methods for delimiting species have changed over time, with a dramatic rise in the popularity of genomic approaches recently. Because inferred species boundaries have ramifications that extend beyond systematics, affecting all fields that rely upon species as a foundational unit, controversy has unsurprisingly surrounded not only the practices used to delimit species boundaries, but also the idea of what species are, which varies across taxa (e.g., the use of subspecies varies across the tree of life). This lack of consensus has no doubt contributed to the appeal of genetic-based delimitation. Specifically, genomic data can be collected from any taxon. Moreover, it can be analyzed in a common statistical framework (as popularized by the multispecies coalescent as a model for species delimitation). With the ease of collecting genetic data, the power of genomics, and the purported standardization for diagnosing species limits, genetic-based species delimitation is displacing traditional time-honored (albeit time-consuming) taxonomic practices of species diagnosis. It has also become an invaluable tool for discovering species in understudied groups, and genetic-based approaches are the foundation of international endeavors to generate a catalogue of DNA barcodes to illuminate biodiversity for all of life on the planet. Yet, genomic applications, and especially the sole reliance upon genetic data for inferring species boundaries, are not without their own set of challenges.

Proficiency in English politeness is an invaluable tool in maintaining effective communication. Differences in beliefs, culture and customs, values and norms exist between English and other languages. Non-native English speakers encounter difficulties when making apologies and greetings in the language. The research examined politeness of English and Tshivenda apologies and greetings. The research paper adopted a qualitative research approach designed to build a holistic narrative description concerning social or cultural phenomenon. Formal and informal interviews were carried out ethnographically to collect data from selected 15 historical experts at Phawe, Zoutpansberg in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Data were quantified, simplified, organised, and interpreted using an 'emic' approach because they were interpreted from the perspective of the population under study. The research found that some Vhavenda people could narrate stories around politeness in their society. The research recommends the continuous practice of apologies and greetings to preserve the Vhavenda culture and custom.

The article examines the controversial procedure of analyzing the learner’s professional needs. Needs analysis is generally regarded as an invaluable tool for constructing a course syllabus. It might be really informative if the target situation analysis and present situation analysis are combined. Speaking about academic writing teaching for Russian non-academic students at the Bachelor Degree level, one should admit that students have no or limited experience of functioning in an academic area in English. Consequently, their responses to the questionnaires as one of the frequently used methods of target situation analysis are merely assumptions; and the answers could not be taken as objective and valid. The author presents a system of analyzing students’ needs within the framework of Academic Writing course: namely, distinguishes the stages that precede or follow teacher-student talks about their expectations, provides more objective practice of examining learners’ needs, and discusses ways of improving question-answer sessions/ interviews. Needs analysis practice that develops learners’ professional needs involves task-based learning, reflexive activities, and teaching to ask good questions. Bringing into life the analogy between customer development theory in management and needs analysis practice in education, it is possible to work out a fruitful strategy. Conducting needs analysis pertains equally to specifying and developing students’ needs in academic communication.

In world practice, a business plan has long become a generally accepted way of providing commercial information and the basis for business negotiations. With the development of market relations and the expansion of international economic relations, business planning becomes one of the important elements of ensuring the competitiveness and successful production and financial activities of an enterprise. On the basis of the business plan, the calculation of the economic efficiency of business ideas and investment decisions, the assessment of the commercial feasibility of investing in their implementation is carried out. A well thought out business plan can be a key step in building a successful and sustainable agricultural enterprise. Business plans, as objects that reflect the characteristics of the field of activity, must be developed not in a template, but based, first of all, on the intended purpose. In this case, the number of sections is regulated. It is one thing when a business plan is developed with the aim of introducing a highly effective innovation, and quite another when it is created for the financial recovery of an organization. A business plan is a document that defines the future goals of a business and a strategy for achieving them. Description can take two forms: narrative and financial. A business plan includes the following documents: resume, business introduction, market analysis, competitor analysis, products and services, marketing and sales strategies, organizational structure, and financial projections. Thus, a business plan is an invaluable tool that helps a grower to be on track to achieve the goals of an agricultural business. Regardless of whether you are a cattle farmer, raising products or processing, it is an agricultural business.

Our understanding of plant–microbe interactions in soil is limited by the difficulty of observing processes at the microscopic scale throughout plants’ large volume of influence. Here, we present the development of three-dimensional live microscopy for resolving plant–microbe interactions across the environment of an entire seedling growing in a transparent soil in tailor-made mesocosms, maintaining physical conditions for the culture of both plants and microorganisms. A tailor-made, dual-illumination light sheet system acquired photons scattered from the plant while fluorescence emissions were simultaneously captured from transparent soil particles and labeled microorganisms, allowing the generation of quantitative data on samples ∼3,600 mm3 in size, with as good as 5 µm resolution at a rate of up to one scan every 30 min. The system tracked the movement of Bacillus subtilis populations in the rhizosphere of lettuce plants in real time, revealing previously unseen patterns of activity. Motile bacteria favored small pore spaces over the surface of soil particles, colonizing the root in a pulsatile manner. Migrations appeared to be directed toward the root cap, the point of “first contact,” before the subsequent colonization of mature epidermis cells. Our findings show that microscopes dedicated to live environmental studies present an invaluable tool to understand plant–microbe interactions.

IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic has reduced the accessibility to hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) tests required for virtual diabetes clinics. The aim was to develop and validate a user-friendly postal system for remote HbA1c monitoring.Research design and methodsValidation: A total of 123 capillary blood samples from people with diabetes (PWD) needing face-to-face consultations along with healthy volunteers were measured on a point-of-care (POC) Siemens DCA Vantage Analyzer. Another sample of 5–10 drops was simultaneously collected in a K2EDTA tube (BD Microtainer) and stored for up to 12 days at room temperature for subsequent retesting. Feasibility: During October to December 2020, a total of 286 postal HbA1c kits were sent to PWD prior to their virtual consultation. These contained sample collection guidance, the necessary equipment and a feedback form. As per Packing Instruction 650 regulations, these were posted back to the diabetes center for HbA1c testing on the POC analyzer.ResultsThere was a strong correlation between the first and the stored sample (R2=0.978). There was a small clinically insignificant negative bias −1.53 mmol/mol (2 SD = 3.10 mmol/mol). Bland-Altman plots showed 93% of results within 2 SD. Of the 87% of returned kits, only one sample failed to be analyzed. 94% of PWD who provided feedback were happy to use the postal HbA1c system again.ConclusionsA robust user-friendly postal HbA1c system has been created and successfully integrated into clinical practice using the existing POC equipment at the diabetes center. It provides accurate HbA1c results and is an invaluable tool for remote monitoring of HbA1c in PWD—both during and after the pandemic.

Animal models represent an invaluable tool, which must be judiciously used to provide the greatest benefit to human kind, due to their cost and time effectiveness. The CCN2 null mouse model described in this paper represents a new murine model of craniofacial development. This model is notable for its remarkably consistent phenotype and ease of colony care and propagation. The interaction of CCN2 with the TGF-β, BMP, FGF, EGF, Integrin, and WNT proteins is currently under investigated and signifies a plethora of research opportunities that may help elucidate novel therapeutic options for future patients. This paper presents a descriptive overview of the known craniofacial developmental abnormalities of this model as well as the known molecular signaling aberrances that provide clues to direct future investigative endeavors.

Abstract Molecular dynamics simulations are an invaluable tool in numerous scientific fields. However, the ubiquitous classical force fields cannot describe reactive systems, and quantum molecular dynamics are too computationally demanding to treat large systems or long timescales. Reactive force fields based on physics or machine learning can be used to bridge the gap in time and length scales, but these force fields require substantial effort to construct and are highly specific to a given chemical composition and application. A significant limitation of machine learning models is the use of element-specific features, leading to models that scale poorly with the number of elements. This work introduces the Gaussian multipole (GMP) featurization scheme that utilizes physically-relevant multipole expansions of the electron density around atoms to yield feature vectors that interpolate between element types and have a fixed dimension regardless of the number of elements present. We combine GMP with neural networks to directly compare it to the widely used Behler-Parinello symmetry functions for the MD17 dataset, revealing that it exhibits improved accuracy and computational efficiency. Further, we demonstrate that GMP-based models can achieve chemical accuracy for the QM9 dataset, and their accuracy remains reasonable even when extrapolating to new elements. Finally, we test GMP-based models for the Open Catalysis Project (OCP) dataset, revealing comparable performance to graph convolutional deep learning models. The results indicate that this featurization scheme fills a critical gap in the construction of efficient and transferable machine-learned force fields.
