Influence of Socioeconomic Status on Risky Sexual Behaviours among Undergraduate Students from selected Universities in Nakuru County, Kenya

This study's purpose was to establish the influence of socioeconomic status on risky sexual behaviours on risky sexual behaviours among undergraduate students of main campuses in Nakuru County. Social Learning Theory by Albert Bandura and Person-Centred Theory by Carl Rogers guided the study. The study was carried out among 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th-year undergraduate students from main campuses in Nakuru County. The study adopted a correlational research design. The target population was 18570 undergraduate students. The accessible population was 8456 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th-year undergraduate students whose sample was 367. Respondents were selected by applying the simple random sampling technique. The study included a sample of 10 peer counsellors and 2 student counsellors from the Egerton University and Kabarak University main campuses who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were obtained using a questionnaire for undergraduate students, focus group discussions guide for peer counsellors and interview schedule for student counsellors. Validation of research instruments was done through peer and expert review and also through pilot testing, which was done in Mount Kenya University (MKU) - Nakuru Campus. Quantitative data was analysed by both inferential and descriptive statistics using SPSS Version 25, whereas the qualitative data was analysed thematically. The analysed data was presented in tables, graphs, and narratives. The findings indicated that the majority of the respondents were of the view that socioeconomic status influences risky sexual behaviours among undergraduate students.

Young adults including university students are at high risk of acquiring HIV due to their risky sexual practices. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of risky sexual behaviours amongst regular undergraduate students in Jigjiga University. The researcher used a quantitative, univariate cross-sectional descriptive study. Two hundred and thirty six (236) students were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a standardised structured questionnaire. The study revealed that 70.53% of respondents were sexually experienced. Majority (54.8%) of the sexually experienced respondents were sexually active within 3 months of the study. Up to 30.14% of sexually experienced respondents have had sex with a person other than their currentpartner in the past 12 months. Only 59.6% of the sexually experienced respondents used condom in their most recent sexual engagement. The findings of this study showed that university students are involved in sexual behaviours that may increase their risk of contracting HIV infection. Based on the above results, researchers recommended the designing of interventions which are contextually relevant to Jigjiga University to mitigate risky sexual practices amongst university students.

This chapter examines the use of social media in the training and education of undergraduates of Library and Information Science. The target population of the study comprises of Library and Information Science (LIS) undergraduate students selected from two tertiary education institutions in Kwara State, Nigeria. From this population, 260 LIS undergraduates selected through a simple random sampling technique represent the sample for the study. A self-developed questionnaire was used to gather data from the respondents. Descriptive statistical data analysis method was use to analyse the collected data. The results of the study are presented using frequency tables, percentages, and charts. The major findings from the study are that LIS undergraduates and lecturers from the participating tertiary institutions in Kwara State perceive social media as mainly for chatting with friends and relatives. The findings also indicate that making use of social media contributes to undergraduates' grades and thereby improves their academic performance.

Introduction: Information Communication Technology (ICT) is the use of computers, mobile phones and internet to access, process, receive, send, and use various kinds of data and information. With the expansion of mobile phone users and availability of internet services, teenagers are now using ICT to create awareness and use contraceptives, an area considered to be the preserved of married couple. Purpose: The paper examines how the application of ICT by teenagers broken traditional and religious barriers to accessing and utilizing contraceptive information in the Sunyani East Municipality. Methodology: The research design was a mixed method combining qualitative and quantitative approaches. The target population was teenagers between the ages of 11 and 19 years in Senior High and Junior High Schools. Out of 87 schools, 16 schools were randomly selected using simple random sampling technique. The total sample size was 212 teenagers.  Data was collected from the respondents, using interviews, questionnaires and focus group discussions. The paper found that ICT is a major means of accessing, sharing and using information about contraceptives by the teenagers, information is hard to access because of societal perceptions, sociocultural and psycho-religious barriers. Findings: The paper found that ICT has impact on their perceptions, utilization or otherwise, because they now the effects of various kinds of contraceptives. Recommendation: The paper recommends that teenagers should be given proper ICT education to enable them use credible websites on the internet to get contraceptive information. Education should be intensified through the mass media, free lectures, radio and television discussions to augment the use of ICT to expand the number of teenagers using contraceptive.

Aims: The study determined strategies for handling restiveness among undergraduates in universities in Nigeria Study Design: Descriptive survey research design was adopted. Place and Duration of Study: The target population for the study is all undergraduates in universities in Nigeria. The duration is between March 2018 and October 2018. Methodology: Simple random sampling was used to select eight faculties from the total of fourteen (14) faculties in Nnamdi Azikiwe University (that is, the accessible population). Thus, a disproportionate stratified random sampling technique was employed to select forty (40) students each from the eight faculties selected. A self-developed instrument by the researcher was used for this study titled “strategies for handling undergraduate restiveness Questionnaire (SHURQ)”. Cronbach alpha formula which yielded correlation coefficient of 0.70. Total of three hundred and ten (310) was recovered out of the three hundred and twenty (320) questionnaire administered. Data collected from the respondents through the questionnaire were used to answer the research questions using weighted mean. The criterion mean was set at 2.50 and above as agree and below 2.49 as disagree. Results: The result indicates that undergraduates in universities in Nigeria have positive attitude towards strategies for handling undergraduate restiveness (Mean = 3.22, N = 310). The result further shows that undergraduates’ in universities have positive attitude towards ICT facility strategies for handling undergraduate students (Mean =3.32). More so, undergraduates in tertiary institutions was rated to have positive attitude towards recreation facilities strategy for handling undergraduate restiveness (Mean = 3.02). Conclusion: Based on the findings it was concluded that governments, school administrators, lecturers, and counsellors should aid in facilitating ways to curb restiveness among undergraduates as it has a multiplying effect on the general wellbeing of an individual and students in general. Restiveness among undergraduates will be reduced to the barest minimum if all the strategies found effective are been put to use.

Background and Study Aim: The main purpose behind the study was to establish the challenges in relation to the acquisition of life skills among university student-athletes of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The study assessed the extent to which the concern existing resources, facilitators, and trainer attitude influences life skills acquisition among student-athletes. Material and Methods: Descriptive survey research design was followed to obtain desirable results. The target population of this study consisted of all those who participated in different sport at the university level of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan. Amongst them, we selected a representative sample (n=389 fifty 50% of the total population) with the help of a simple random sampling technique. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version, 24 was used to code and analyse the data. The hypotheses were tested by applying statistical tests like Step-wise regression and independents sample t-test. The significance level of 0.05 was fixed to accept or reject the set hypotheses. Results: Findings of the study indicated that existing resources, facilitators, and trainer/coach attitude significantly influences life skills acquisition among student-athletes (.001, .001 & .000 < .05). The analysed data revealed no significantly difference regarding extent to which specific challenges such as existing resources, facilitators, and trainer attitude influences the acquisition of life skills (.500, .133 & .149 > .05). Conclusions: The findings of the study revealed that all participants have agreed upon the importance of life skills. Therefore, the life skills course might be considered as an integral part of every educational curriculum of Pakistan. It is suggested that a minimum of 2 hours per week may be included in the educational curriculum of each discipline.

Abstract Background Misconceptions about the usefulness of condoms and other contraceptives still expose many unmarried adolescents to the risk of unwanted teenage pregnancies and sexually-transmitted infections (STIs). This study explored beliefs and misconceptions about condoms and other contraceptives among adolescents in Ebonyi state, south-east Nigeria. Method A qualitative study was undertaken in six local government areas in Ebonyi state, southeast Nigeria. Data were collected within a period of one month from in and out-of-school adolescents aged 13–18 years using twelve focus group discussions (FGD). The data were analyzed using the thematic framework approach. Result Majority of the adolescents were knowledgeable about methods of contraception, how they are used and their modes of action. They were also knowledgeable about the dual effects of condoms in prevention of pregnancy and STIs. However, some misconceptions that were expressed by some adolescents were that pregnancy could be prevented by the use of (i) hard drugs, (ii) laxatives, (iii) white chlorine, and (iv) boiled alcoholic beverages. Condoms were described by some adolescent boys as reusable. Condoms were also perceived by some adolescents to reduce sexual pleasure, and this opinion was mostly held by boys. Coitus interruptus (withdrawal method) was therefore considered more preferable than condoms for prevention of pregnancy. Conclusion Although majority adolescents have knowledge about contraception and condom use, some misconceptions still persist. These misconceptions put many adolescents at increased risk for pregnancy and STIs which are detrimental to their health and wellbeing. Concerted efforts should be made through educational and behaviour change interventions in schools and within communities to debunk persisting misconceptions about contraception including the use of condom, and properly educate adolescents on safe sex practices. Plain English summary Adolescents engage in unprotected sexual intercourse and other risky sexual behaviours because of some mistaken beliefs and wrong impressions about how to prevent unwanted pregnancy. These risky sexual behaviours predispose adolescents to sexually transmitted infections, unsafe abortion and other reproductive health problems. In this qualitative study, we explored some of these mistaken beliefs about condoms and other methods of preventing pregnancy. During focus group discussions, adolescents identified modern contraceptive methods, and described their modes of action and how they are used. They also discussed their contraceptive preferences and perceived effects of condoms on sexual pleasure. Although some of these adolescents were able to correctly mention various types of contraceptives and their modes of action, there were numerous wrong impressions. Hard drugs, laxatives, white chlorine and boiled alcoholic beverage were listed as emergency contraceptive methods. Emergency pills were perceived to work by flushing away spermatozoa from a girl’s system after sexual intercourse. Male condoms were perceived to be potentially dangerous because they could break and enter into the body of the female sexual partner. Some adolescent boys had the notion that particular brands of male condoms could be washed and reused. Notions about condom use and sexual pleasure varied for girls and boys. Some adolescent girls perceived that condom use during sex increases sexual pleasure because of the assurance of being protected from STIs and pregnancy. Adolescent boys were of the opinion that condoms interfere with the pleasure of direct ‘flesh to flesh’ contact during sex. There was a general belief that contraceptive use in early age reduces fertility prospects for boys and girls. Mistaken beliefs about methods of preventing pregnancy persist among adolescents, and this raises concerns about the quality of information they receive. Concerted efforts should be made to debunk these wrong beliefs and properly educate adolescents on safe sex practices.

The tourism business is one of the mainstays of West Bandung Regency. One of them is the Cihideung agro-tourism area. This potential agro-tourism area requires cooperation from various related parties in order to develop better. This study aims to determine and analyze the factors that affect the partnership effectiveness in developing the Cihideung agro-tourism area. This research method uses a quantitative approach to the type of survey research. The target population in this study are the parties who partner in the development of the Cihideung agro-tourism area, West Bandung Regency. The sample size in this study was 45 people obtained by the simple random sampling technique. Data collection techniques by means of field studies, interviews and literature studies. The data were processed using Exploratory Analysis Factor (EFA). The results showed that the factors that affect the partnership effectiveness in developing the agro-tourism area of Cihideung, West Bandung Regency are Vision and Communication, Commitment and Partners, Vision of Partnership, Data Integration, Incentives and Information, Results and Progress, Joint Ownership and Outcome Accountability. A total of 2 factor points from which must be reduced from 26 factor points so as to produce 24 factor points that are truly dominant and form the effectiveness of the partnership. Overall, the partnership effectiveness was in the high category with an average score of 3.95. Vision and Communication factor is the most dominant factor, which is equal to 40.142%. Bisnis pariwisata merupakan salah satu andalan Kabupaten Bandung Barat. Salah satunya adalah kawasan agrowisata Cihideung. Kawasan agrowisata potensial ini memerlukan kerjasama dari berbagai pihak terkait agar berkembang lebih baik. Penelitian ini bertujuanuntuk mengetahui dan menganalisis faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi efektivitas kemitraan pengembangan kawasan agrowisata Cihideung. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan jenis penelitian survei. Target populasi dalam penelitian ini ialah para pihak yang bermitra dalam pengembangan kawasan agrowisata Cihideung Kabupaten Bandung Barat. Ukuran sampel pada penelitian ini adalah 45 orang yang didapatkan dengan teknik Simple Random Sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data dengan cara studi lapangan, wawancara dan studi literatur. Data diolah menggunakan Exploratory Analysis Factor (EFA). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi efektivitas kemitraan pengembangan kawasan agrowisata Cihideung Kabupaten Bandung Barat adalah Visi dan Komunikasi, Komitmen dan Mitra, Visi Kemitraan, Integrasi Data, Insentif dan Informasi, Hasil dan Kemajuan, Kepemilikan Bersama dan Akuntabilitas Hasil. Sebanyak 2 butir faktor dari yang harus direduksi dari 26 butir faktor sehingga menghasilkan 24 butir faktor yang benar-benar dominan dan mempengaruhi efektivitas kemitraan. Secara keseluruhan, efektivitas kemitraan berada dalam kategori tinggi dengan nilai rata-rata sebesar 3,95. Faktor Visi dan Komunikasi merupakan faktor yang paling dominan yaitu sebesar 40,142%.

AbstractEvidence from literature shows that deviant behavior is on high side among undergraduates in Nigeria whereas some certain psychosocial factors causing this phenomenon have not been fully explored. This study examined whether age, gender, socio-economic status and attitude towards drug abuse determine deviant behavior among the undergraduate students. It adopted ex-post facto design. Simple random sampling technique was used to sample 269 participants. The Prescription Drug Attitudes Questionnaire (PDAQ) and Deviant Behavior Variety Scale (DBVS) were used to gather data from the participants. T-test analysis and multiple regression were used to test the formulated hypotheses. The results revealed that age, monthly allowance and attitude towards drug abuse have significant joint prediction of deviant behavior (R=.358 R2 =.128, F=10.594, p<.05) while only attitude towards drug abuse independently predicted deviant behavior (R=.236, R2 =.056 F = 17.112; p<.01). Also, there was a significant gender difference on deviant behavior [t (293) = 4.196, p<.01], where male respondents scored high significantly (M=4.09, SD=3.44) compared to female respondents (M=2.53, SD=2.31) on deviant behavior. It is therefore recommended that policy makers in educational sector and the governing council of tertiary institutions need to create awareness on the debilitating effects of drugs on students’ behavior, especially among males.

The contributions of fire disaster to the varying degrees of students’, staff and schools’ property and/or lives lost in secondary schools in Nigeria is recently alarming. The study assessed causes of fire disaster in public and private secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis, Nigeria. The objectives were to identify latent causes of fire disaster, use the fishbone diagram to illustrate and analyze the root-causes of fire disaster in secondary schools. The exploratory research strategy was used. The target population was 18 senior public and private secondary schools, Ilorin having 18 principals, 965 teachers and 3765 senior secondary 2 students. From the target population, simple random sampling technique through a pick and not-return balloting was employed to sample 72.22% of the principals, 14.8% each of the teachers and students. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, questionnaire, participatory observation, and were analyzed using cause-and-effects-analysis. The findings reveal fire disasters in public and private secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis are primarily caused by bush/waste burning, electrical fault/wiring, arson,  carelessness, and alcohol, smoking. Results also showed that the root-causes of fire phenomenon from the classic categories were setting undergrowth on fire, non-insulated wiring system and sparks from wrong connections, emotional induced from cultism rivalry among male teachers and students over a girl and superiority within and outside the school, mishandling of chemicals in various laboratories during experimentation, and lack of proper fencing of school compound. The study recommends that schools in the metropolis should prepare and anticipate future fire tragedy. Consequently, since there are several factors responsible for fire incidents, further studies could be conducted to clarify the sequence or magnitude of each cause of the fire outbreak.
