Abstract Deuber (2006) investigated variation in spoken Nigerian Pidgin data by educated speakers and found no evidence for a continuum of lects between Nigerian Pidgin and English. Many speakers, however, speak both languages, and both are in close contact with each other, which keeps the question of the nature of their relationship on the agenda. This paper investigates 67 conversations in Nigerian English by educated speakers as they occur in the International Corpus of English, Nigeria (ice-Nigeria, Wunder et al., 2010), using the variability in copula usage as a test bed. Implicational scaling, network analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis reveal that the use of variants is not randomly distributed over speakers. Particular clusters of speakers use particular constellations of variants. A qualitative investigation reveals this complex situation as a continuum of style, with code-switching as one of the stylistic devices, motivated by such social factors as formality, setting, participants and interpersonal relationships.

This article presents a general overview of philosophical issues undertaken in the work of Richard Otowicz (1953–2003), Jesuit and Professor of Moral Theology at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Warsaw. Within the set of views developed by him, the theological perspective undoubtedly assumes pride of place. Often, however, he refers to philosophical issues from which, in his opinion, one cannot escape—issues that bear directly on human life. What is especially striking is Otowicz’s hypothesis that bioethics is a kind of self-defense reflex of mankind, who are attempting by means of it to intellectually grasp the issues relating to the unlimited expansion of technology. Developments and changes observed in the world are forcing humanity to rethink very fundamental issues, such as interpersonal relationships or the relationship of man to nature.

A review is presented of empirical research on the effects of gender and power on the use of influence strategies in interpersonal relationships. Several variables are considered, including gender, power, status, relationship of agent to target, and the goal of the influence attempt. Although gender appears to account for some of the findings, power and status are more critical variables in choice of power strategies. Because gender is inextricably linked to power and status, the relationship of gender to influence strategy usage can only be understood in terms of its relationship to power and status.

The article deals with the problem of alienation from academic work among students with disabilities, as well as the relationship of alienation from study and personal characteristics. The relevance lies in the need to study the alienation from study of students with disabilities due to the fact that they are at risk for academic failure due to the difficulties that arise during training in conditions of the need for inpatient treatment and the need for special equipment. The purpose of the article is to determine the relationship of personal characteristics and alienation of students with HIA. The sample consisted of students of the Moscow State Psychological and Pedagogical University (N=75; respondents aged 20 to 25 years (M=22.6, SD=2.5), of which 88% of respondents were female). All students have the status of "limited health opportunities" (cerebral palsy, visually impaired, hearing impaired, having chronic kidney diseases and autoimmune system). Data collection was carried out using Kettell's personal 16-factor questionnaire and the test questionnaire «Subjective alienation of educational work» (V.N. Kosyrev). The obtained results demonstrate the existence of a relationship between the alienation of students with disabilities from educational activities and such character traits as adequate self-esteem, intelligence, emotional instability, courage, sensitivity, dreaminess, conformity, tension. The results can be used in the development of psychocorrective programs aimed at overcoming the alienation of students with the status of disabilities from educational activities.
