Attention is focused, in this article, on the dilemmas of the supervisory role and the shift from a bureaucratic to a collegial culture. This article, based on practitioner reflection, provides anecdotal evidence to support the move from a bureaucratic culture to a collegial one. The author documents a basic conflict he has experienced which hindered his ability to function effectively. Specifically, the article explores an unresolved dilemma between the necessity to evaluate and the desire to genuinely assist teachers in the instructional process. This problem, although seemingly intractable, can, in fact be mitigated through more collaborative efforts which strive to foster participatory democratic leadership. These efforts are discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of emotional intelligence (EI) and achievement motivation (AM) on elementary school principals’ leadership styles. This study investigates the contribution of EI and AM on the two major leadership categories: the task-oriented and relationship-oriented leadership. Design/methodology/approach This paper is a quantitative study with the implementation of correlation and hierarchical regression analysis. The surveys (i.e. EI scale, AM scale, leadership style questionnaire) were sent randomly to 280 elementary school principals in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and 90 of them completed the survey (mostly male=77.78 percent). Findings Principals’ EI significantly predicted both task-oriented and relationship-oriented leadership. In contrast, the principals’ AM yielded non-significant results in predicting both task-oriented and relationship-oriented leadership style. The results also suggested that the effect of EI on two major leadership styles (i.e. task- and relationship-orientation) outperformed the leader’s AM. Research limitations/implications This study did not consider the principals’ performance in the analysis. Future studies should also address this issue by considering leadership performance as well as different culture and context. On the other hand, the authors developed new measures rather than using preexisting measures. Although the measures have been constructed according to the scale construction principles and reached an acceptable standard, future research should advance the psychometric property of the scales. Originality/value This study discusses the effect of EI and AM on task- and relationship-orientation leadership. In addition, this study has also brought a new insight into understanding leadership styles in collective culture such as Indonesia.

The chapter discusses the relevance of individual differences in personality traits for the study of school leadership, especially with regard to leadership success. Findings from psychological leadership research have shown that, amongst others, personality, cognitive and emotional intelligence, as well as creativity predict leadership outcome variables. The authors investigate how far these traits have been able to predict leadership success across different occupations and also across different situational and methodological conditions. In addition, studies on the relationship of individual trait differences and school principals' effectiveness are discussed. The chapter shows that individual differences research holds potential for educational leadership, but further studies are needed to draw conclusions about the potential cognitive ability, personality traits, emotional intelligence, as well as creativity hold for predicting leadership success of school principals.

The charitable endeavors of Muhammadiyah in the Bangka Belitung Region in the field of education from the levels of Elementary Schools, Junior High Schools, and High Schools and Vocational High Schools are spread to all districts/cities. However, the discussion about Muhammadiyah education in Bangka Belitung is very minimal. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. This study took the sample of the oldest and best senior high school as an illustration of Muhammadiyah education management in Bangka Belitung. The results showed that Muhammadiyah Education experienced various obstacles to the threat of closure, however, they were able to rise from adversity. Muhammadiyah Pangkalpinang High School as the oldest school departed from a school that boarded at Muhammadiyah Middle School and later became one of the most popular schools in the era of the 1990s to accommodate students up to 18 classes, but later it fell free and was almost closed due to the lack of students. Several times the change of school principals has not improved, a new hope is obtained when the management of this school is submitted to the STKIP Muhammadiyah Bangka Belitung to become its lab school. Now with new facilities and management, the number of students is increasing, slowly but surely this school is starting to improve itself. Meanwhile, Muhammadiyah Toboali High School, South Bangka Regency, which was established in 1994, almost lost public confidence, due to a large number of students who failed the National Examination for the 2006/2007 school year. The situation changed along with Supiandi's leadership, his persistence in managing the school, and finally, the trust in the community returned. Now the number of students has reached nearly 500 students

The purpose of this study was to test the mediating effects of coping on relationships of psychological distress and stress with anxiety, depression, and quality of life. A cross-sectional and correlational research study was used to recruit a sample of 440 patients with advanced cancer in Indonesia. A bootstrap resampling procedure was used to test the significance of the total and specific indirect effects of coping. Data analysis showed that problem-focused coping (PFC) mediated relationships of psychological distress and stress on depression, anxiety and functional well-being. PFC also mediated the relationship between stress and social well-being. Emotional-focused coping (EFC) mediated the relationship of stress with physical and emotional well-being. EFC also mediated the relationships between psychological distress and physical well-being. Thus, proper assessments and interventions should be tailored and implemented for patients in order to facilitate their use of coping strategies when needed in stressful situations.
