The article aims to identify some of the peculiarities of the XIXth century outlaw novel in relation to the conventions and the stereotypes of the adventure novel, focusing on George Baronzi’s novel, Mina the Outlaw. The Girl of the Forests, an agreeable novel in spite of several narrative clumsiness. The novelty comes from the fact that the novel proposes a female character in the role of the hero, somehow accumulating the conventions and some narrative invariants specific to the outlaw novel, but also to the sentimental novel, the plot having as a starting point a love story. The novel is, therefore, chracterized by a certain naivity specific to the subgenre and to the literary period to which it belongs, but the author cannot be blamed for the lack of a certain sense of suspense and proliferation of adventures, by moving from one conflict to another, by changing the setting of the action thus activating its narrative potential.

The relevance of the article is determined by the researcher of the semantic poetics of Platonov’s story “Potudan River”. We carry out an analytical review of the lifetime criticism and articles of modern researchers about the story, on the basis of which we formulate the purpose of the study, due to the need for a new approach to the interpretation of the work and the identification of the principles of its poetics. The novelty of the article is determined by the identification of the multilayered symbolism of the title of the story, which allows to establish the insufficiency of the conclusions that the content of the “Potudan River” is limited to the family theme. At the level of micropoetics we reveal symbolic details that connect the content of the story with the motive of love for the distant, medical and construction subjects and revealing the planetary scale of the author’s thinking. For the first time, it was established that Platonov’s story “Potudan River” was written based on part of the plot of the novel “Chevengur” – the love story of Alexander Dvanov and Sonya Mandrova. We show that the heroes of the story “Potudan River” Nikita Firsov, Lyuba Kuznetsova and Nikita’s father are doubles of the characters in the novel “Chevengur” by Sasha Dvanov, Sonya Mandrova, and Zakhar Pavlovich. The connection of the image of Lyuba with the archetype of the bride is considered. The paper reveals for the first time the intertextual connections of the story “Potudan River” with the poem “The Bronze Horseman” and the novel in verse “Eugene Onegin” by A. Pushkin, in the texts of which the writer found material for modeling the ordinary fate of the hero. Multi-level connections of the content of the story “Potudan River” with Platonov’s artistic world, which is a complete metatext, are found, which opens up new opportunities for determining the role of the editing technique and the principles of returning to the plots and motives of the works of the 1920s, as well as their transformation in the writer’s work of the 1930s.

The transformation of literary realism in the late nineteenth century took place within the context of a categorical shift in American social epistemologies. The first chapter presents an interdisciplinary, generational portrait of this shift by examining a set of key texts from the years 1896–98 as summaries of the reconstruction of law, literature, and philosophy since the Civil War. Two important works by the James brothers, philosopher William James’s “The Sentiment of Rationality” and Henry James’s What Maisie Knew, demonstrate how the relationship between “sentiment” and “rationality” had been transformed. By attacking the nineteenth century’s trust in the emotions alongside its belief in a transcendent concept of reason, William and Henry James made a case for a new kind of moral imagination grounded in the uncertainty of the emotions and the unknowability of other selves. While the James brothers greeted the collapse of the sentimental paradigm as an emancipatory moment for individuals and for the novel itself, the lawyer and novelist Albion Tourgée saw it as imperiling the ability of Americans to speak, write, or think about freedom. Best known as Homer Plessy’s lawyer in Plessy v. Ferguson, Tourgée was also the most passionate defender of the emancipatory role of the sentimental novel. Exploring Tourgée’s opposition to pluralistic relativism in his brief on behalf of Homer Plessy and his literary analysis of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, this chapter explores the opposition between the Jameses’ celebratory vision of epistemological perspectivalism and Tourgée’s defense of sentimental reason.

"El ángel descuidado" by Eduardo Mendicutti as a Tool to Address the Issue of Homosexuality and Religion in the Literature Class at a Polish University According to the new edition of ILGA-Europe’s annual review, Poland ranks second in the list of most homophobic countries in the European Union. Among the causes of this situation are reasons like ignorance, fear of the Other, multiple stereotypes based on the Polish collective imagination and religious motives. The last factor is of great significance in a country as religiously homogeneous as Poland, in which Catholic morals penetrate all spheres of life of its citizens. During my teaching career I have noticed a strong need among my students for an honest and thorough debate about homoerotic attraction, which in many of them provokes rejection or even repulsion. As a starting point for the discussion, I propose the reading of the novel El ángel descuidado by the Spanish writer Eduardo Mendicutti. The book tells the story of two young seminarians who live their first love in the bosom of a religious institution. The main objective of my text is to present the current situation of gays and lesbians in Poland along with the attitude of Polish society and politicians towards the LGBTQ community, to deliberate on a supposed conflict between Catholic morality and homosexuality, to analyze possible reactions of students of Hispanic Philology to the novel of Mendicutti and to meditate on the role of literature in the construction of a just and egalitarian society.

The article considers literary self-definition of Fyodor Dostoevsky at the starting point of his career as a writer. Its purpose is to reveal connections of the young author with contemporary writers and his place in the literary process on the basis of specific texts. The article continues the research presented in two articles published in 2013 and examines a wider range of texts related to Dostoevsky’s first novel, Poor Folk. By applying the principles of comparative analysis to the repeated narrative elements, the author of the article shows that Mikhail Voskresensky’s story “Zamoskvoretskie Tereza i Faldoni” (1843), which is considered to be parodied in Poor Folk, has just one common feature with Dostoevsky's novel: names of one main and one secondary character. The names refer to a popular sentimental novel by Nicolas Germain Léonard (1783), retold with disapproval by N. M. Karamzin, while Voskresensky’s story was unworthy even of caricature for the insignificance of its content and its poetics. It should also be noted that not a single motif that exclusively belongs to this story was reproduced by Dostoevsky at any time later. The situation is quite different in the case of Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Conspirators (Le Chevalier d’Harmental), published in a newspaper in 1841–1842 and as a separate edition in 1843. The novel’s plot twists, main characters, some features of their personalities and some details regarding what happens to them are reflected in Poor Folk. But this was not done for reasons of parody. Dostoevsky chose the novel by the famous Frenchman only to promote his own world view and the new principles of art – the nascent realism with its unadorned “truth of life”, harsh and often tragic reality in contrast to the benevolent romanticism

The intellectual prose of Vladimir Nabokov is not easy to be filmed. Thus, filmmakers have made a lot of changes in the original text. The goal of The Luzhin Defence creators’ was to show a completely new interpretation of Nabokov’s novel and present it to the public. This is why they simplified the plot, added some dynamism, made it more epic and attractive (love triangle, Luzhin’s mother’ suicide, erotic scenes, conspiracy, kidnapping, failed wedding). Luzhin’s childhood has been presented as a series of flashbacks. The hierarchy of characters has been changed: two equivalent characters are in the center (Luzhin and Natalia). All other characters have been given their first names and their biography. The film is spiced with feminism: the female character is stronger than in the novel and the story of a chess player (Luzhin) is presented from the feminist director’s point of view. Love story is placed in the center of the plot and it covers the topic of the game of chess. The motif of chess is connected with an extra independent character providing comments about chess to a viewer. Nabokov’s idea about the transcendental nature of arts, madness as the price for being a genius, is not presented in the film. The conflict in the film is not about metaphysics, but about intrigues and envy. Additionally, the plot has been complemented with an epilog to Nabokov’s story. After Luzhin’s suicide Natalia finishes the championship chess match by following his notes about the game and takes a revenge.

In certain conversational settings, silence does not only represent the absence of speech, but it is used as a means of communication conveying different meanings. The objective of this paper is to analyze the pragmatic role of silence in Orhan Pamuk's novel Kafamda Bir Tuhaflık. Examples of silence are registered in the original text of the novel Kafamda Bir Tuhaflık and contrastive analysis was used to compare them with the types of silence presented in the translations to Bosnian language. This was used to try to establish whether certain types of silence have an identical pragmatic value in Turkish and Bosnian language. The analysis compares syntactic structures expressing different types of silence in the original text of the novel and its translations to Bosnian language. Turkish language is the initial language of the analysis. Therefore, syntactic structures expressing different examples of silence in the original text of the novel are compared to the translational equivalents in Bosnian language. The analysis of specific contextual examples shows that the success of interpersonal communication depends to a great extent on accurate knowledge and understanding of different types of silence. The results obtained from the analysis contribute to better knowledge and understanding of different types of silence in different conversational settings and they can serve as a good basis and a good starting point for further research regarding different types of silence.

  Al-Ajanihah Al-Mutakasirroh’s novel was written by Gibran Kahlil Gibran ( 1883 – 1931 ) a Lebanese-born literary writer. Various works have been published in various countries. One of them is the Al-Ajnihah Al-Mutakasirroh novel as an autobiograpical novel. This novel takes theme of a love story that fails when there is love for two human beings. Novel Memang  Jodoh, by Marah Rusli ( 1889 – 1968  ) he is an Indonesian literary force at Balai Pustaka. Novel Memang Jodoh a match as an autobiographical novel of the author. This novel tells the story of love that happily interwoven. The method used is comparative descriptive method. Through this method teh date is first described and then compared. The approach used is the heuristic and hermeneutic approach, Michael Riffaterre to describe the role of moral values contained in the novel Al-Ajnihah Al-Mutakasiroh and Memang Jodoh. This study aims to determine the comparison of moral values contained in the novel. The results showed a dfiference between the characters who encourage the creation of moral values, the end of the love story in the novel and the causes of conflict in the novel.   Novel Al-Ajnihah Al-Mutakasirroh dikarang oleh Gibran Kahlil Gibran ( 1883-1931 ), seorang penulis karya sastra kelahiran Lebanon. Beragam karya nya telah diterbitkan kedalam berbagai negara. Salah satunya yakni novel Al-Ajnihah Al-Mutakasirroh  sebagai novel otobiografi. Novel ini mengangkat tema kisah percintaan yang kandas dikala tumbuhnya cinta pada dua insani. Novel Memang Jodoh karya Marah Rusli ( 1889 – 1968 ) ia seorang sastrawan Indonesia angkatan Balai Pustaka. Novel Memang jodoh sebagai novel otobiografi dari pengarang. Novel ini bercerita tentang kisah cinta yang terjalin bahagia. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deksriptif komparatif. Melalui metode ini terlebih dahulu data dideskripsikan kemudian dibandingkan. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan heuristik dan hermeneutik, Michael Riffater untuk mendeskripsikan peranan nilai moral yang terdapat dalam novel Al-Ajnihah Al-Mutakasirroh  dan Memang Jodoh. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui perbandingan Nilai Moral  yang terdapat dalam novel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya perbedaan antara karakter tokoh yang mendorong terciptanya nilai moral, akhir dari kisah cinta dalam novel dan penyebab pertentangan dalam novel.

Abstract Torgrim Eggen’s Hilal (1995) is an early example of literature on the subject of Islam in Norway in its global contexts. As a romantic love story with elements of an action thriller and science fiction in form of future technological inventions, the novel combines an intense reading experience with thought provoking reflections on the role of religion and religious conflicts in secular societies. Based on Almuth Hammer’s ideas on the relationship between religion and literature as well as Jan Assmann’s theses on functions of oral and written language in religions, my essay analyzes the representation of Islam in Hilal and shows parallels between the structure of love and faith in the novel.
