The effects of quantitative feed restriction on broiler growth and monetary returns were investigated using two hundred and forty Cobb broiler chicks. Three levels of restriction namely, 5 10 and 15% of ad libitum intake, were randomly imposed on different groups. Birds that were restricted in the starter phase of growth were later full-fed in the finisher phase, and vice versa. Body weight was depressed by all levels of feed restriction considered. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was however not significantly affected. Although quantitative feed restriction significantly reduced feed cost the highest revenue was realized from control birds. All economic parameters considered did not show feed restriction as having advantage over full feeding.

Hungarian Landrace Guinea Fowls are famous for their excellent meat quality produced by traditional free-range farming. The study aimed to identify the optimal size of a free-range area for keeping Hungarian Landrace Guinea Fowl, and to examine its effect in combination with quantitative feed restriction on growth performance, 486 birds were randomly distributed into 18 cages. Free-range areas of different sizes (either 50 m2 or 15 m2 per bird, or without a running area) were provided from 6 weeks of age, and from 9 to 14 weeks,feed restriction at varying levels of 90%, 80%, 70% or ad libitum feeding was also applied. Body weight, body weight gain and feed conversion ratios were recorded every two weeks. Results showed that differing freerange area sizes and feed restriction had a substantial effect on the body weight of Hungarian Landrace Guinea Fowl, which was evident by the age of 10 weeks and continued until 14 weeks, where feed restriction negatively affected guinea fowl growth in free-range keeping. Guinea fowl provided with 15 m2 of free-range area per bird and fed ad libitum had the highest body weight  (1378.52 ± 43.68 g) with relatively low feedconversion ratio (3.82 ± 0.14 kg feed per kg body weight gain) when compared with other experimental groups at the age of 14 weeks. The lowest body weight and feed conversion ratio was observed in groups with 15 m2 freerange area per bird and 70% feed restriction (1245.93 ± 38.64 g and 3.52 ± 0.12 kg feed per kg body weight gain), while the highest feed conversion ratio was detected in groups fed ad libitum and kept closed, without a free range area (4.34 ± 0.06 kg feed per kg body weight gain).

Considering the inherent attributes of tannia cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagitifolium) its appropriate utilization may enhance performance of starter broiler chicks. This study was therefore carried out to determine the dietary evaluation of starter broiler chicks fed cooked cocoyam tuber meal as energy source in place of maize. The cooked cocoyam tuber meal was used to replace maize at various levels of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% respectively for diets 2, 3, 4 and 5 to determine the best replacement level that would give optimal performance in starter broiler chicks' diets. Result of the proximate composition of cooked cocoyam tuber meal showed that it contained 13.11% moisture, 2.60% ash, 1.85% ether extract, 3.90% crude protein, 9.45% crude fibre, 70.13% nitrogen free extract and 3004.37 Kcal/kgME. 150 day old Anak broiler chicks were used for the experiment. They were divided into 5 treatment groups of 30 broiler chicks each. Each treatment group was subdivided into 3 replicates of 10 broiler chicks each and kept in deep litter. Each starter diet was fed to a group of 30 starter broilers for 4 weeks using completely randomized design. They were given feed and water adlibitum. Parameters measured include initial body weight, final body weight, body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio and economics of production. In the starter broiler feeding trial, the starter broilers on 25% cooked cocoyam meal compared favourably with the control (P> 0.05) in terms of feed intake, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio and significantly (P > 0.05) performed between than those on 100% CCYM. The cost of production (N/Kg broiler) was however cheapest for diet 2 (25% CCYM) N395 versus control diet (N494.28). It was therefore concluded that cooked cocoyam tuber meal (Xanthosoma sagitifolium) could be used in the diets of starter broiler chicks' up to 25% without affecting the body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio as indicated in this study.

An experiment was conducted with 312 day-old male broiler chicks in grower phase(8-28d) to estimate the biological availability of four sources Zinc (Zn), Zinc sulfate(ZnSO4.H2O), two sources of Zinc oxide(ZnO FG1 and ZnO FG2) and Bioplex Zn. Zinc sulfate (ZnSO4.H2O) was used as the standard in the bioavailability assay. Chicks were allotted randomly to 13 dietary treatments with 6 birds per replicate and 4 replicates per treatment, that included an unsupplemented corn-soybean meal basal diet (25.50 mg of Zn/kg of DM), or the basal diet supplemented with 100, 150 or 200 mg/kg of DM as either ZnSO4.H2O (33 % Zn), Zinc oxide FG1(72%Zn), Zinc oxide FG2 (75%Zn) or Bioplex Zn (15% Zn). Dietary Zn level and source had no effect (P>0.05) of feed intake or body weight gain of chicks during first and second weeks of experimental periods, but feed conversion ratio in the first and second week and feed intake, body weight gain or feed conversion ratio in third week and total experimental periods were significant difference between treatments (P<0.05). The relative biological availability values using body weight gain were estimated to be 59, 99 or 45 for three levels of Zinc oxide FG1, 64, 78 or 31 for three levels of Zinc oxide FG2 and 151, 200 or 147 for three levels of Bioplex Zn, respectively. From the standpoint of bioavailability, Bioplex Zn was more available to broiler chicks than Zn from other sources and can be used by the feed industry as sources of supplemental Zn for broiler chickens.

An experiment was conduct in order to investigate the effects of feed restriction level and duration and dietary coenzyme Q10 level on growth performance, organ characteristics and plasma lipoproteins. A factorial arangment based on a completely randomized design was performed using two levels of feed restriction (10 and 20% less than the standard Ross strain 308 guidelines), two levels of restriction duration (7 and 14 days) and three levels of coenzyme Q10 (0, 20 and 40 mg/kg feed). The results of the experiment showed that restriction intensity had significant effect on feed intake in first, second and sixth weeks of age (P<0.05), body weight gain in second and sixth weeks of age (P<0.05), and feed conversion ratio in first week of age (P<0.05). Restriction duration had significant effect on feed intake in third week of age (P<0.05), and feed conversion ratio in third and sixth weeks of age (P<0.05). Coenzyme Q level had significant effect on feed intake in first and sixth weeks of age (P<0.05), body weight gain in second, fifth and sixth weeks of age (P<0.05), and feed conversion ratio in second and sixth weeks of age (P<0.05).  In conclusion, considering the positive effects of feed restriction and coenzyme Q10 on broiler yield, the simaltaneous use of feed restriction strategy and dietary coenzyme Q10 can be considered as a management program in order to improvement of broiler productivity.

Two trials were conducted to evaluate the inclusion of glycerine, glucose, or sucrose in broiler starter diets to overcome negative effects of delayed feed access. In trial 1, 2160 newly hatched chicks (mixed sexed) were randomly assigned to two feeding programs (immediate vs. 36 h delayed feed access). Nine starter diets prepared with crude glycerine, glucose, or sucrose fed at 0%, 4%, or 8% levels were fed during the first 14 d post hatch (PH). In trial 2, 720 male and 720 female newly hatched chicks were randomly assigned to two feeding programs (immediate vs. 48 h delayed feed access). Starter diets fed during the first 14 d of feed access, consisted of a control, 8% glycerine, or 8% glucose. In both trials, a common grower and finisher diet were fed during days 14–24 and 25–35, respectively. Body weight and feed consumed were measured on 7, 14, 24, and 35 d. In trial 1, all 8% diet-fed birds were heavier compared with the control on day 35 PH (2259 vs. 2198 g, P < 0.01). Birds fed glycerine starter diets had improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) during 22–35 d (P < 0.01). In trial 2, glycerine diet resulted in heavier birds after 35 d of feed access, compared with birds fed control and glucose diets immediately after hatch (2373 vs. 2276 g, P < 0.01). Dietary inclusion of 8% glycerine can assist newly hatched broiler chicks to overcome delayed feed access induced growth suppression.

One method of reducing feed cost is to restrict the feed in the early life of broilers. In this regard, Fontana et al. (1992) reported that early feed restriction programs in their experiments proportionally reduced the consumption of the starter diets by an average of 22% in restricted broilers when compared with controls. Energy restriction has also been shown to result in a reduction in metabolic energy loss leading to a reduced requirement for maintenance. If during refeeding, this low requirement is maintained and if growth resumed at a normal or above normal rate (compensatory growth), feed efficiency would be substantially improved, leading to an economical advantage. This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of severity of diet dilution (energy and protein) and duration of early feed restriction on feed intake (FI), body weight gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of male broiler chickens.

A feeding trial of 42 days was conducted to discern the effect of dietary incorporation of giloe and cinnamon powder on growth performance in commercial broilers .One hundred and twenty, day old Vencobb broiler chicks were procured and divided randomly into 6 treatment groups with 2 replicates of 10 chicks each viz., T1 (control) were fed basal diet whereas in treatment group T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6, basal diet was incorporated with 1% giloe, 2% giloe, 1% cinnamon, 2% cinnamon and combination of 1% giloe and 1% cinnamon, respectively. During starter phase (0-21 days), the body weight gain was significantly (P£0.05) higher in T3incorporated with 2% giloe. The feed conversion ratio was significantly (P£0.05) improved in broiler chicks fed diet incorporated with 1% giloe (T2). The performance index was significantly better in T2 and T3 compared to other groups. During finisher phase (22-42 days), the feed conversion ratio was significantly better in T2 and T6 compared to other groups. Performance index was significantly higher in T2 incorporated with 1% giloe. During the whole experimental period (0-42 days), incorporation of 1 % giloe improved broiler performance in terms of body weight, weight gain, feed conversion ratio and performance index. The average body weight gain of T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 were 1408.8, 1580.2, 1540.3, 1517.2, 1474.4 and 1551.0g, respectively. It can be concluded that giloe and/or cinnamon in combination can be fed to broilers to improve growth performance.

Twenty-eight day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the performance of broiler finisher fed soybean hull based diets supplemented with “Safzyme®”, an exogenous cellulolytic enzyme. Soybean hull also referred to as soyhull, soybean millrun or soybean flakes are by-products of the soybean milling industry. Five broiler finisher diets were formulated such that the diets contained soybean hull meal at 0%, 10% and 20% dietary levels (without enzyme supplementation) and 10%, and 20% dietary levels (with 1.0% enzyme supplementation) respectively. One-hundred and fifty (150) four-week-old Hubbard broiler chicks were divided into five groups of thirty (30) birds each and randomly assigned to five treatment diets in a completely randomized design (CRD). Data were collected on feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and economics of production was also computed. Feed intake increased progressively as dietary inclusion of soybean hull was increased with or without enzyme supplementation. This increase became significant (P<0.05) at 20% dietary level of soybean hull. Daily body weight gains of birds on soybean hull meal diets with enzyme supplementation did not significantly differ (P<0.05) from birds on soybean hull meal diets without enzyme supplementation. Feed conversion ratio and feed efficiency were both significant (P<0.05) at 20% dietary levels of soybean hulls with or without enzyme supplementation. Dietary inclusion of soybean hull without enzyme supplementation reduced cost of feed and production of 1kg of meat while enzyme supplementation negatively affected percent feed cost savings. The results of this trial suggest that supplementation of diets containing soybean hull meal at 20% dietary levels with Safztme®, an exogenous cellulolytic enzyme, at 10% dietary level could not improve the nutritive value of the hulls for broiler finisher birds and also affected negatively percent feed cost saving.

The experiment was carried out to determine the overall performance and economic analysis of broiler chickens fed different commercial diets marketed in Kano metropolis. A total of 112 day-old Zertek strain of broiler chicks were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments coded as A, B, C and Din a completely randomized design. Each group was replicated 4 times with seven birds per replicate. Birds were weighed at the onset of the experiment and weekly thereafter. Feed intake and live weight gain were measured, recorded and used to determine the feed conversion ratio. The chicks were managed on a deep litter system and the experiment lasted for six weeks. Feed and water were supplied ad libitum throughout the feeding trial. Results revealed that feed intake of birds ranged from 78.5-87.3 (g/b/d), live weight gain ranged from 49.3 – 53.9 (g/b/d) while feed conversion ratio ranged between 1.59 and 1.64. There were no significant (P > 0.05) differences in feed intake and feed conversion ratio. However, significant (P < 0.05) difference was observed in live weight gain where birds on treatments B, C, and D were superior to birds on treatment A. The market costs of the feeds at the time of the experiment were used to calculate the feed cost (₦ / kg), total feed cost (₦), feed cost (₦ /kg gain). Feed cost ₦/kg gain was best in treatment A. This study was conducted with Thai broiler chicken (KKU 1) to investigate the effect of citric acid by-products from rice (CABR) on growth performance and villi histology. A total of 192 broiler chicks were subject to three dietary treatments, including 0% CABR, 3% and 6% of dry matter. Body weight gains, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, survival rate, and production index (body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, survival rates, and productive index, respectively) were considered for growth performance evaluation. Villi height (µm), crypt depth (µm), and villi: crypt ratio were recorded for the villi histological measurement. The performance did not show a significant effect when compared with the control group during at ages ranging from 1 to 56 days. Villi histology indicate a significant effect on villi height (µm), crypt depth (µm), and villi: crypt of broiler chicks compared with the control group. Also, the use of 3% CABR caused a reduction microbial contamination in chicken fecal matter. In conclusion, supplementation of CABR had no negative effects on growth performance of Thai broiler chicken (KKU 1). Also, the addition of 3% CABR to the feed might help reduce fecal microbial contamination and affect the villi histology of Thai broiler chickens (KKU 1).
