An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of different organic acids (OAs on carcass yield and internal organ characteristics of broiler chickens. The OAs were acetic acid (AA) butyric acid (BA), citric acid (CA) and formic acid (FA). One hundred and fifty (150) day old AborAcre - plus chicks were used. There were five dietary treatments. Diet 1 which served as control (CON) contained no OA, while diets 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively contained 0.25% AA, BA, CA and FA which replaced palm kernel cake in which each treatment was replicated three times with 10 birds per replicate and arranged in completely randomized design (CRD). Diets were both isoenergetic and isonitrogenous. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks. Feed and water were given ad libitum. At the end of the 8 weeks of feeding, 3 birds from each replicate giving a total of 9 birds per treatment were slaughtered for carcass and internal organ evaluation. Result from the carcass evaluation showed that there were no significant differences (P>0.05) in dressed carcass weight, thigh, wing and drumstick. All the OAs except BA produced bigger breast meat compared to the birds fed control diet. The weight of the backcut was significantly (P<0.05) reduced by FA compared to the birds on control diet. Birds that consumed FA treated diet deposited more abdominal fat and AA produced the least (P<0.05). Internal organ result indicated that both the liver and the kidney were not negatively affected by OA treated diets. Caecum and the large intestine were significantly larger in than those obtained from birds fed the control diet. Therefore, addition of the OAs except BA to broiler diets could be a good practice considering their positive effect on the breast meat which is a premium cut part.

The liver weight was significantly (P<0.05) reduced by BA and FA while the weight of spleen was reduced (P<0.05) by all the OAs. The caecum and the large intestine were significantly (P<0.05) enlarged in the control. There was non effect (P>0.05) on other internal organs.

Betaine is a methyl group donor that can increase protein synthesis since it has a similar role as methionine. The study was performed to determine the supplementation effect of betaine in the diet containing adequate methionine on growth performance and feed efficiency of female broilers. In total, 200 of day-old chicks of female broiler chickens were allotted to 4 treatments with 5 replicationsof 10 birds. This experiment was designed as completely randomized design. Control diet was formulated to contain adequate methionine (0.50% for starter and 0.38% for finisher period). The other dietary treatments were obtained by supplementing 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% betaine. The variables observed consisted of feed, protein and energy consumption, average daily weight gain, feed efficiency, protein and energy efficiency ratio. Supplementation of 0.1% betaine generated a higheraverage daily weight gain (P&lt;0.05), but supplementation at higher levels (0.2 and 0.3%) had no effect on weight gain. However, betaine did not affect feed, energy and protein consumption, as well as feed efficiency and energy and protein efficiency ratio. Thus, betaine can be applied in the diet containing adequate methionine at the level of 0.1% to produce higherdaily weight gain without affecting feed efficiency. Supplementation of betaine at higher levels than 0.1% did not show positive effect on weight gain and feed efficiency in female broiler chickens.

A total of 200 Cobb 500 male broilers were randomly allocated to 4 treatments consisting of 5 replications with 10 chicks each in order to evaluate the effect of dietary garlic and thyme seed supplementation on the production performance, carcass yield and gut microbial population. Treatments were control diet (T1), control diet with 1% thyme seed powder (T2), control diet with 1% garlic powder (T3) and control diet with 0.5% thyme seed and 0.5% garlic powder (T4). Feed intake, body weight, weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), carcass yield was not significantly (p>0.05) improved by dietary treatments compared to control. Escherichia coli (E. coli) count in the gut of broilers did not show significant difference among dietary treatments. However, Lactobacilli count in the gut of broilers significantly (p<0.05) increased in T2 compared to that of T1. Lactobacilli count in the gut of broilers received T1, T3 and T4 did not differ significantly (p>0.05) with each other. It was concluded that thyme seed was reliable as feed additive in the broiler diet and could provide positive advantages to the colonization and proliferation of Lactobacilli.

Abstract Background: Compared to the corresponding source of inorganic trace minerals (TM), chelated supplements are characterized by better physical heterogeneity and chemical stability and appear to be better absorbed in the gut due to possibly decreased interaction with other feed components. This study was designed in broiler chickens to determine the effects of replacing inorganic trace minerals (TM) with an advanced chelate technology based supplement (Bonzachicken) on growth performance, mineral digestibility, tibia bone quality, and antioxidant status. A total of 625 male 1-d-old broiler chickens were allocated to 25 pens and assigned to 5 dietary treatments in a completely randomized design. Chelated TM (CTM) supplement was compared at 3 levels to no TM (NTM) or inorganic TM. A corn–soy-based control diet was supplemented with inorganic TM at the commercially recommended levels (ITM), i.e., iron, zinc, manganese, copper, selenium, iodine, and chromium at 80, 92, 100, 16, 0.3, 1.2, and 0.1 mg/kg, respectively, and varying concentration of CTM, i.e., match to 25, 50, and 100 % of the ITM (diets CTM25, CTM50, and CTM100, respectively). Results: All diets, except diet CTM25, increased average daily gain (ADG), European performance index (EPI), and serum total antioxidant capacity compared to the NTM diet (P < 0.05). Broilers fed the CTM100 diet had lowest overall FCR and highest BWG, EPI, tibia ash, zinc, and manganese contents (P < 0.05). The tibia phosphorus content and apparent ileal digestibilities of phosphorus, zinc, and manganese were lower in the ITM group compared with the CTM50 and CTM100 groups (P < 0.05). Broiler chickens fed any of the diets exhibited higher serum glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities and lower malondialdehyde level than those fed the NTM diet, where the best values were found for CTM100 treatment (P < 0.05). Conclusions: These results indicate that while CTM supplementation to 25 and 50% of the commercially recommended levels could support growth performance, a totally replacing ITM by equivalent levels of CTM could also improve growth performance, bone mineralization and antioxidant status of broiler chickens under the conditions of this study.

Abstract The feed quality have direct/indirect impact on the blood profiles of animal and determines health status. Hence, this study was carried out to investigate the dietary effect of T. nilotica seed meal (TNSM) on haematology and serum biochemical indices of goats. 15 West African Dwarf goats with a similar age range of 12-18 months old and body/live-weight of 6.88±0.26 kg were randomly allocated to 5 dietary treatments with 3 goats per replicate in a Completely Randomized Design arrangement for 12 weeks. Unprocessed TNSM were collected, screened and milled and were used to replace palm kernel cake at 20% (diet B), 30% (diet C), 40% (diet D) and 50% (diet E) replacement levels in a complete concentrate diets while diet A (control diet) had no T. nilotica. Nutrient composition, intake and animals' blood samples were assessed. Results revealed that all parameters observed were significantly (p<0.05) different. At 20%, DWG, FGR were best. PCV, RBC, Hb values of the goats decreased with increased with replacement level of PKC with TNSM. It could be concluded that TNSM could serve as protein source in place of PKC in goat diet up to 20% without any adverse effects on growth and health status.

Cake of shea nut is an agroforestry by-product and residue after fat extraction from shea nuts for fat with no economic value and its increasing output has become an environmental issue lately. A 30-day study was conducted to investigate the apparent nutrient digestibility and carcass yield of broiler chicken fed cooked cake of shea nut diets of different fermentation periods. A total of 144 unsexed Arbor Acres Plus day-old broiler chickens were divided into four dietary treatments with four replicates of nine birds each in a completely randomized design. The results showed that fermentation enhanced the nutrient profile of cake of shea nut meal especially concerning crude protein and crude fiber as compared to raw cake of shea nut meal. The treatment values for crude protein and crude fiber digestibility showed significant (p < 0.05) differences amongst the dietary treatments while other nutrient parameters measured were not significantly (p > 0.05) different. There was no significant (p > 0.05) difference amid the treatment means for the control (carcass, breast and liver yield) and the carcass, breast and liver yield of broiler chickens fed diets containing different periods of fermented-cooked cake of shea nut meal.

One hundred and fifty one day old Arbor-Acre - plus chicks were used. There were five dietary treatments. Basal diet which served as control contained no organic acid was formulated, while diets 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively contained 0.25% acetic, butyric, citric and formic acids formed by adding 0.25% of each acid to the basal diet. Each treatment was replicated three times with 10 birds per replicate, arranged in completely randomized design (CRD). Diets were both isocaloric and isonitrogenous. The experiment lasted for 4 from the fourth to the eight week. Feed and water were given ad libitum. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in live weight, daily gain, feed intake, feed: gain ratio and protein efficiency ratio. Acetic acid significantly (P<0.05) increased water intake. Fecal moisture was significantly reduced by citric and butyric acids. Higher crude protein digestibility was achieved by butyric acid (69.98%) citric (69.67%) and formic acid (71.33%) than the control (63.75%). Digestibility of CF, EE and ash was significantly (P<0.05) higher in all the organic acid groups. Feeding of diets treated with 0.25% of the test organic acids at the finisher phase, in that despite improved digestibility of nutrients the practice should not be encouraged for reasons of insignificant growth performance.

Deficit of conventional feed ingredients in meeting increased demand has led to an alarming hike in their prices culminating in sky rocketing cost of livestock feed. This has necessitated an urgent search for low cost and more readily available alternatives. This study was conducted to investigate the performance of broiler chicks fed diets containing graded levels of soaked and boiled Bambara nut seed meal (BNSM). One hundred and five (105), 2 week old broiler starter chicks were used for the experiment. The birds were randomly allotted into four dietary treatments with each treatments replicated thrice at seven birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. Five experimental diets were formulated containing processed BNSM designated as T1 (control diet with 0 % BNSM), while T2, T3, T4 and T5 had 5 % soaked BNSM, 10 % soaked BNSM, 5 % boiled BNSM and 10 % boiled BNSM, respectively. The experiment lasted for four (4) weeks. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. The results showed that birds fed processed BNSM diets had significantly (P<0.05) higher final weight and weight gain comparable to 702.38g and 19.99 g/bird/day in the control group. The values obtained from feed intake showed that T2 (64.74 g) had significantly (P<0.05) least value compared to other dietary treatments. Feed conversion ratio and feed cost per kg gain (N) were significantly (P<0.05) better in birds fed processed BNSM diets compared to 3.39 and N215.85 respectively in the control group. It was therefore concluded that processed BNSM improved performance of broiler chickens.     Le déficit d'ingrédients alimentaires conventionnels pour répondre à la demande accrue a conduit à une hausse alarmante de leurs prix, aboutissant à une flambée du coût des aliments pour le bétail. Cela a nécessité une recherche urgente d'alternatives peu coûteuses et plus facilement disponibles. Cette étude a été menée pour étudier la performance des poussins de départ de pouletsde chair nourris avec des régimes contenant des niveaux échelonnés de farine de graines de noix de Bambara trempées et bouillies. Cent cinq (105) poussins de départ âgés de 2 semaines ont été utilisés pour l'expérience. Les oiseaux ont été répartis au hasard en quatre traitements diététiques, chaque traitement étant répliqué trois fois à raison de sept oiseaux par réplique dans une conception complètement aléatoire. Cinq régimes expérimentaux ont été formulés contenant du 'BNSM'-Bambara nutseedmeal(Aliment de farine de graines de noix de bambara)- traité désigné comme T1 (régime témoin avec 0% de BNSM), tandis que T2, T3, T4 et T5 contenaient 5% de 'BNSM' imbibé, 10% de 'BNSM' imbibé, 5% de 'BNSM' bouilli et 10% de 'BNSM' bouilli, respectivement. L'expérience a duré quatre (4) semaines. L'alimentation et l'eau étaient fournies ad libitum. Les resultants ontmontré que les oiseaux nourris avec des régimes 'BNSM' transformés avaient un poids final et un gain de poids significativement plus élevés (P <0.05) comparables à 702.38 g et 19.99 g / oiseau / jour dans le groupe témoin. Les valeurs obtenues à partir de la consommation alimentaire ont montré que T2 (64.74 g) avait une valeur significativement moindre (P <0.05) par rapport aux autres traitements diététiques. Le taux de conversion alimentaire et le coût alimentaire par kg de gain (N) étaient significativement meilleurs (P <0.05) chez les oiseaux nourris avec des régimes 'BNSM' transformés par rapport à 3.39 et N215.85 respectivement dans le groupe témoin. Il a donc été conclu que le 'BNSM' transformé améliorait les performances despoussins de départ de poulets de chair.

This study aimed at investigating the effect of by-products of palm kernel extraction; palm kernel extraction residue (PKER) and palm kernel sludge (PKS) based diets as replacement for maize in broiler diets. A total of 198 one-day old Marshal Broiler chickens were randomly assigned to six dietary treatments. Each dietary treatment had 33 birds with 11 birds per replicate. Maize in the diets was partly replaced by PKER and PKS each at three levels (0, 10 and 20%). The experiment was conducted in both starter and finisher phases. Growth responses, carcass evaluation and nutrient utilization were estimated. Data obtained were subjected to 2x3 factorial arrangement within the completely randomized design (CRD). Feed: Gain was influenced by the level of the palm kernel by-products during 1-28days of study. The weight gained during the 56 days period were not significantly higher (P>0.05) across the treatments All the carcass parameters measured were not significantly (P>0.05) affected by either PKER or PKS. However birds on PKER diets showed superior (P<0.05) nutrients use. In conclusion, the inclusion of palm kernel extraction by-products (between 10-20% PKER and 20% PKS) in the diets of broiler chickens is thereby encouraged for better growth and efficient feed utilization.
