Inverse effect and receptor dynamics – Coffee, Opium and Wine's secondary pharmacology

A homeopathic widespread belief is that the inversion of effect of the drugs in homeopathic medical practice is due to dilution or very low doses, but there are many homeopathic incoherencies. For example the first conception of the similia principle was obtained through planned, small sample, clinical experiments with ponderal/pharmacological doses in healthy and diseased subjects1. Furthermore the classical foundations of the similia principle in Organon2, the primary and secondary actions of drugs, were thought to be connected with opposite, time-dependent reactions of the body to high doses and the inversion of effect was seen in temporal sequence after a strong dose and not after changes of doses, so the idea that dilutions are responsible for inversion of effects is not suitable to the classical theory. And lastly homeopathic provings or pathogenetic trials have frequently mixed, unregarded to the doses, occasional toxicological symptoms and symptoms obtained through diluted substances3, reinforcing the idea that, on healthy subjects, in several cases many substances produce the same symptoms in pharmacological or infinitesimal doses. So at least the dose-dependent inversion of effect is not generalized in a great part of the collected symptoms. Biological foundations to similia principle have to be searched in other directions4, as in different sensitivity to drugs between health and disease, or in different time-dependent effect of drugs on specific, but different, cell sensitivity set point. In the vision described here both these possibilities represent the same phenomenon of altered cell sensitivity. It is aim of this article to show that the original hahnemannian idea to explain homeopathic similia principle starting from a pharmacological and biological point of view with ponderal doses, seems correct, rationally comprehensible and based on modern knowledges. The three pharmacologic examples that best illustrate this reasoning, coffe, opium and wine, will be discussed.

39 original articles were analyzed. 8 of them were excluded due to the small sample of patients. The effectiveness of the intravenous Ig, systemic glucocorticosteroids, cyclosporin A, biological agents (etranecept, infliximab, thalidomide) on the basis of the SCORTEN scale and the number of lethal outcomes was evaluated. Information was searched for the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley Online Library, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library. The systemic glucocorticosteroid (GCs) pulse therapy using only in the phase of disease progression was the most appropriate. Some authors showed a high risk of sepsis development in patients treated with GCs. In patients who received high doses of IVIg (2 g/ kg), mortality was 2.5 times lower compared to the lower one. The number of lethal outcomes in the Cyclosporin A (3 mg/kg/day) group was 3.3 times lower. A high mortality rate was observed in patients receiving thalidomide. The effectiveness of a particular method of therapy, as well as the prognosis of the disease, largely depends on the process severity, the presence and type of concomitant pathology (for example, severe course and negative outcome in patients with cancer). There is no a single point of view regarding the therapy of SSJ and TEN. Thus, a large multicenter randomized studies are crucial.

Nothing is known about the possible effect of thymol or other compounds of essential oils against the adult worms of cestodes. The aim of the present work was to determinein vitrocestodicidal activity of thymol againstMesocestoides cortiadult worms. Moreover, thein vitroeffect on tetrathyridia was also demonstrated. Tetrathyridia exposed to different concentrations of thymol showed a concentration and time-dependent effect. At lower concentrations, the main change observed was mainly in morphology, with larvae exhibiting an elongation of the body. When tetrathyridia were exposed to higher concentrations, increased surface alterations and damage were detected. The body appeared elongated and flattened, and a complete loss of morphology and microtriches was observed. Thymol was able to killM. cortitetrathyridia, since following inoculation of treated parasites in mice no parasites could be recovered. The effect onM. cortiadult worms was dose and time-dependent. Changes in motility coincide with the tissue damage were observed at the structural and ultrastructural level. Thymol caused severe damages to both developmental stages analyzed. Damages were more significant in fully segmented worms. The data reported in this paper demonstrate a clearin vitroeffect of thymol againstM. cortitetrathyridia and adult worms.

I argue that we are entering an automated era of border control that I label a border-biosecurity industrial complex. Funded in great part by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), scientific research and automated surveillance technologies promise the state innovative and supposedly unbiased solutions to the challenge of border control and security. This article spotlights a border surveillance technology called AVATAR (Automated Virtual Agent for Truth Assessment in Real-Time). Analyzing this technology, which was funded by the DHS and developed by faculty at the University of Arizona’s National Center for Border Security and Immigration (BORDERS), allows me to assess how the emphasis on novel technologies to detect terrorists unleashes the search for ubiquitous surveillance devices programmed to detect deviant behavioral and physiological movements. I offer a wider view of this technology-in-the-making by analyzing how university research in aerial defense, the psychology of deception, the life sciences, and computer engineering influences the development of surveillance devices and techniques. I explore how, during a posthuman era, automated technologies detect and racialize “suspect life” under the guise of scientific neutrality and supposedly free from human interference. Suspect life refers to the racial bias preprogrammed into algorithms that compute danger or risk into certain human movements and regions such as border zones. As these technologies turn the body into matter, they present biological life as a more scientifically verifiable truth than human verbal testimony, moving border control from the adjudication of law through the subjective interview to the automated body that speaks a truth more powerful than a complex story can tell.

Continuing the workshop I've given in the WPC Paris (2017), this article elaborates my discussion of the way I interlace Focusing with Differentiation Based Couples Therapy (Megged, 2017) under the systemic view, in order to facilitate processes of change and healing in working with intimate couples. This article presents the theory and rationale of integrating Differentiation (Bowen, 1978; Schnarch, 2009; Megged, 2017) and Focusing (Gendlin, 1981) approaches, and its therapeutic potential in couple's therapy. It is written from the point of view of a practicing professional in order to illustrate the experiential nature and dynamics of the suggested therapeutic path. Differentiation is a key to mutuality. It offers a solution to the central struggle of any long term intimate relationship: balancing two basic life forces - the drive for individuality and the drive for togetherness (Schnarch, 2009). Focusing is a body-oriented process of self-awareness and emotional healing, in which one learns to pay attention to the body and the ‘Felt Sense’, in order to unfold the implicit, keep it in motion at the precise pace it needs for carrying the next step forward (Gendlin, 1996). Combining Focusing and Differentiation perspectives can cultivate the kind of relationship where a conflict can be constructively and successfully held in the inner world of each partner, while taking into consideration the others' well-being. This creates the possibility for two people to build a mutual emotional field, open to changes, permeable and resilient.

Abstract Advertising helps to establish a set of assumptions that the consumer will bring to all other aspects of their engagement with a given brand. Advertising provides tangible evidence of the financial credibility and competitive presence of an organization. Persuasion is becoming more important in advertising. In marketing, persuasive advertising acts to establish wants/motivations and beliefs/attitudes by helping to formulate a conception of the brand as being one which people like those in the target audience would or should prefer. Considering the changes in lifestyle and eating habits of a significant part of the population in urban areas in Romania, the paper aims to analyse how brands manage to differentiate themselves from competitors, to reposition themselves on the market and influence consumers, meeting their increasingly varied needs. Food brands on the Romanian market are trying, lately, to identify new methods of differentiation and new benefits for their buyers. Given that more and more consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about what they eat and the products’ health effects, brands struggle to highlight the fact that their products offer real benefits for the body. The advertisements have become more diversified and underline the positive effects, from the health and well - being point of view, that those foods offer (no additives and preservatives, use of natural ingredients, various vitamins and minerals or the fact that they are dietary). Advertising messages’ diversification is obvious on the Romanian market, in the context of an increasing concern of the population for the growing level of information of some major consumer segments.

The ingredients of an antipyretic (acetaminophen, AAP) and their metabolites excreted into fingerprint were detected by surface-assisted laser desorption ionization (SALDI) mass spectrometry using zeolite. In the fingerprint taken 4 h after AAP ingestion, not only AAP but also the glucuronic acid conjugate of AAP (GAAP), caffeine (Caf), ethenzamide (Eth), salicylamide (Sala; a metabolite of Eth), and urea were detected. Fingerprints were collected over time to determine how the amounts of AAP and its metabolite changed with time, and the time dependence of the peak intensities of protonated AAP and GAAP was measured. It was found that the increase of [GAAP+H]+ peak started later than that of [AAP+H]+ peak, reflecting the metabolism of AAP. Both AAP and GAAP reached maximum concentrations approximately 3 h after ingestion, and were excreted from the body with a half-life of approximately 3.3 h. In addition, fingerprint preservation was confirmed by optical microscopy, and fingerprint shape was retained even after laser irradiation of the fingerprint. Our method may be used in fingerprint analysis.

The following paper is a study of the surface waves caused by a doublet in a uniform stream, and in particular the variation in the pattern with the velocity of the stream or the depth of the doublet. In most recent work on this subject attention has been directed more to the wave resistance, which can be evaluated with less difficulty than is involved in a detailed study of the waves; in fact, it would seem that it is not necessary for that purpose to know the surface elevation completely, but only certain significant terms at large distances from the disturbance. Recent experimental work has shown con­siderable agreement between theoretical expressions for wave resistance and results for ship models of simple form, and attempts have been made at a similar comparison for the surface elevation in the neighbourhood of the ship. In the latter respect it may be necessary to examine expressions for the surface elevation with more care, as they are not quite determinate; any suitable free disturbance may be superposed upon the forced waves. For instance, it is well known that in a frictionless liquid a possible solution is one which gives waves in advance as well as in the rear of the ship, and the practical solution is obtained by superposing free waves which annul those in advance, or by some equivalent artifice. This process is simple and definite for an ideal point disturbance, but for a body of finite size or a distributed disturbance the complete surface elevation in the neighbourhood of the body requires more careful specification as regards the local part due to each element. It had been intended to consider some expressions specially from this point of view, but as the matter stands at present it would entail a very great amount of numerical calculation, and the present paper is limited to a much simpler problem although also involving considerable computation. A horizontal doublet of given moment is at a depth f below the surface of a stream of velocity c ; the surface effect may be described as a local disturbance symmetrical fore and aft of the doublet together with waves to the rear. Two points are made in the following work.
