Background: Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent that affect millions of people worldwide. Homeopathic system is gaining popularity due to its efficacy in chronic diseases. Ultra-diluted Aconitum napellus is a homeopathic medicine used by clinicians for treatment of acute anxiety. Aim: Objective of this study is to test the efficacy of Aconite on experimental anxiety models of Wistar rats. Methodology: 18 Female Wistar rats were divided into Control, Anxiety, and Anxiety + Aconite (ANX+ACO) groups. Acute stress was induced by restraining the rats for six hours daily for five days in Anxiety and ANX + ACO groups. After five days of stress, a single dose of Aconite 200cH was given to ANX + ACO group through oral gavage, whereas control and anxiety group rats were maintained with a normal diet. Following this, behavioral assessment was done. Results: It was observed that the Aconite treated group had more number of entries and also the percentage of time spent in the open arm was higher than the stressed anxiety group. Histological study of the brain tissue procured from all three groups was analyzed. Conclusion: It was inferred that ultra-diluted homeopathic Aconite has decreased anxiety in Wistar rats which were subjected to acute restrain stress.

Mercury affects several organs and disrupts their functioning, and cinnamonis known for its antioxidant properties so in this study we evaluate the effectof cinnamon extract against the effect of mercury in ovary and brain. 20 female wistar rats were subdivided into four groups (01):received gavage andintraperitonial injection of physiological serum, (02): received gavage withphysiological serum and intraperitonial injection of HgCl2at dose of 0.25mg/Kg/BW/7days, (03): received gavage with hydroalcoholic extract of cinnamonat dose of 100mg/Kg/BW/7days and intraperitonial injection of physiologicalserum, (04): received gavage with hydroalcoholic extract of cinnamon atdose of 100mg/Kg/BW/7days and intraperitonial injection of HgCl2 at dose of0.25mg/Kg/BW/7days. Ovaries and brains were removed to weigh and prepared for histological study and blood were collected for hormonal study. The body weight increased significantly in the mercury-treated group (p =0.001) compared to the control group, a significant increase of left ovaries (p= 0.011) in the treated group with mercury compared to the other groups. The histological section on the brain of the mercury-treated group showsdiffuse cerebral fibrosis. Histological study shows an irregular developmentof ovarian follicles and an increase of atretic follicles in mercury treatedgroup, and cinnamon protect the ovary from the oxidative damage ofmercury. Cinnamon has protective effects against inflammation and oxidative stress in ovarian tissue and brain.

Background: kefir is a fermented milk product that demonstrates numerous health benefits including antioxidant and immunomodulatory. Aim: to study the protective effect kefir on the expression of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) in endometrial stromal cells and endometrial thickness on female rats that were exposed to arsenic. Methods: twenty-five female Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into five groups (CRL, As, T1, T2, T3). Control group (given a normal diet), As group (given the normal diet and exposed to arsenic trioxide 2 mg/kgBW/day). The T1; T2; T3 were exposed to arsenic trioxide 2 mg/kgBW/day and treated with different doses of kefir (1.25; 2.5; and 5 mL/kgBW/day, respectively) for 35 days. The rats of group As treated with arsenic trioxide only and group CRL served as control with normal feed in water. Cytological samples were taken after 35 days of treatment and examined every day to see the rat oestrus phase, and the proestrus phase of the oestrous cycle was chosen for termination. Uterine tissue fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for tissue preparation. ERα expression in endometrial stromal cells was analized using immunohistochemistry method, endometrial thickness was observed using histopathological methods. Results: significant reduction of ERα expression in endometrial stromal cells and endometrial thickness in female rats exposed to arsenic were observed in groups on treated rats (p ≤ 0.000; 0.009, respectively). Conclusion: the administration of kefir in female Wistar rats exposed to arsenic had shown significantly differences on ERα expressions and endometrial thickness. The smallest dose of kefir (1.25 mL/kgBW/day) could increase ERα expression and endometrial thickness in female Wistar rats with arsenic exposure. Therefore kefir has protective effect related to female reproductive system.

ABSTRACT Background and objective Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can be induced in Wistar rats by over production of nitric oxide (NO). This study evaluated the efficacy of naloxone on the breeding characteristics of rats suffering from nitric oxide induced PCOS. Materials and methods Twenty-four female Wistar rats(200–250 gm) were kept as virgin under standard conditions. They were divided into four groups (n = 6). One group of the animals received L-arginine (50 mg/kg) intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 9 days/once a day. Another group was administered naloxone hydrochloride (0.4 mg/kg, i.p.) prior to injection of L-arginine. The third group was injected solely naloxone. Control group received saline solution (1 ml/kg, i.p.). After the treatments, all female rats were coupled with the intact males. They were then separated by observation of vaginal plaques; it was considered as day 0 of pregnancy. Eventually, they were operated on days 18 to 19 of the gestation to collect the animals’ ovaries. The samples were studied for pathological evidence. The fetal number and weight along with the fetal crown-rump length (CRL) were measured. Results The ovaries obtained from the L-arginine treated group had large cysts with thickened granulosa cell layer in contrast to those of the control or naloxone treated rats (p < 0.0001). The number of fetus though showed a decrease in the L-arginine treated rats (3 ± 1), but the fetal weight or fetal CRL did not change (p > 0.05). Conclusion This study may clearly illustrate the polycystic characteristics in the L-arginine treated group. It may particularly display the breeding efficacy of naloxone in rats with PCOS. Adult female Wistar rats (90 days old; weight 180 to 220 grams) were submitted to different zinc deficient diets (Zn; severe = 2.6 ppm; mild = 9.0 ppm and normal diet = 81.6 ppm), during 6 weeks. After this time they were coupled with normal male Wistar rats. No differences regarding fecundity and sterility were observed between the groups. During pregnancy, part of the animals from severe and mild Zn deficient groups received the same diet and the others received normal diet. The animals from the group receiving normal diet, were divided into other 3: the first received severe, the second mild Zn deficient diet and the third normal diet. During the study we observed that animals submitted to a Zn deficient diet (acute or chronic) had tendency to lower weight gain, lower weight of the offspring, lower serum levels of Zn in maternal and newborn (pool) blood. A significant reduction in the number of alive newborns was observed in the group of animals submitted to severe Zn deficiency. These data reinforces that Zn is a very important trace element overall during pregnancy.

Aim: To study antitumor activity of triptorelin — agonist of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and exemestane — inhibitor of aromatase in combination with cisplatin on the model of receptor-positive for estrogens and progesterone malignant transplantable ascites ova rian tumor (OT); to assess tumor response to treatment and VEGF expression in tumor cells under different combinations of cytostatic and hormonal drugs. Materials and Methods: 36 female Wistar rats, which underwent intraperitoneal transplantation of ascites OT (5×106 cells per animal), have been involved in the study. Rats were distributed into 4 groups (9 rats in each group): group 1 — animals, which received combination of cisplatin and triptorelin; group 2 — rats treated with combination of cisplatin and exemestane; group 3 — animals, which were administered with combination of cisplatin, triptorelin and exemestane; group 4 — rats, which received combination of triptorelin and exemestane. Histological study with assessment of treatment pathomorphosis in OT and immunohistochemical study have been carried out to analyze VEGF expression in OT cells. Survival of animals has been evaluated. Results: Combination of cytostatic agent with triptorelin or exemestane has demonstrated significantly higher rates of treatment pathomorphosis (10.1 ± 0.1% and 16.2 ± 0.3%, respectively) and antiangiogenic activity in OT (21.4 ± 1.4% and 15.0 ± 1.3%, respectively), as well as the highest survival of animals (100.0 and 85.7%, respectively) as compared with the same in rats treated in regimen of monotherapy with cisplatin, triptorelin, exemestane or by combination of hormonal drugs. Among animals treated by combination of cytostatic drug with triptorelin, two were cured (22.2%), and among rats, which received cisplatin and exemestane, one animal (11.1%) was cured. Conclusions: Triptorelin and exemestane increase antitumor activity of cisplatin in respect to the transplantable malignant ascites OT and significantly increase survival of animals, especially when triptorelin and cisplatin are used in combination.

The influence of caffeine, administered to rats, on the somatic and sensory-motor development of the offspring was investigated. Female Wistar rats were divided into a control group and a treated group and received drinking water and a 0.1% solution of caffeine orally, respectively. The offspring, also divided into a control group and a treated group, received daily monitoring until the 20th day of life to verify alterations in somatic neural development. The offspring of the treated group had reduced weight on the day of birth and on the 1st, 5th, 15th and 20th days of life; shorter snout-anus length (evaluation done daily); shorter snout-tail length on the day of birth and on the 1st, 5th and 10th days of life, and signs of retardation of somatic and sensory-motor maturation. These results allowed the conclusion that administration of caffeine to rats affects somatic and sensory-motor development of offspring.

The present study has been carried out at the College of Veterinary Medicine ,AL-Qadisiya University to determine the effect of obesity on serum Estrogen concentration in mature female Wistar rats.Fifty immature female rats (14-20 days age,30-40g.) were housed at the animal house during the period extended from 25th March,2011 to 10th June,2011.Animals were randomly divided into two equal groups. Control fed on standard feed and treated fed on high fat feed ( 32.3%fat by weight and 4828 k cal/kg energy). Daily body weights were recorded during the experiment period extended to the 100th day of age .At 60 days of age ,eight of mature female Wistar rats from each group were anesthetized, dissected and blood samples were obtained from abdominal vein for assessment of Estrogen concentration in serum. Ovaries and uteri were also obtained, weighted and fixed in formalin 10% for histopathological study.Ovarian and uterine weights of treated group recorded significant decrement in comparison with that of control.Hormonal assay in sera showed significant decrement of estrogen in treated mature female rats in comparison with that of control female rats. Ovarian sections of treated female rats revealed lower level of proliferation in the follicular tissue and predominance of Graffian follicles compared with control. Similarly uterine sections of treated female rats showed filtration of adipose tissue with less proliferated changes and less uterine glands compared with that in control.

ABSTRACT The mechanisms involved in the prolongation of the oestrous cycle following LH administration were studied in 4-day cyclic female Wistar rats. In females injected with LH on the morning of dioestrus I there was an increase in ovarian venous blood progesterone as compared with non-injected animals. In both LH-treated females, and those injected with progesterone on the morning of dioestrus I, a slowing up in follicular growth was observed from the afternoon of dioestrus I. The size of follicles greater than 400 urn present in LH or progesterone injected animals on the third day of cycle was similar to the size reached by the same range of follicles in non-injected animals on the second day of the cycle. Hence, the increase in endogenous ovarian progesterone elicited by LH was considered as the cause of the slowing up of follicular growth and therefore of the lengthening of the oestrous cycle duration in female rats injected with LH at the beginning of 4-day cycle.
