Citation and credit: The role of researchers, journals, and repositories to ensure data, software and samples are linked to publications with proper attribution.

<p>The Earth, space, and environmental sciences have made significant progress in awareness and implementation of policy and practice around the sharing of data, software, and samples.  In specific, the Coalition for Publishing Data in the Earth and Space Sciences (https://copdess.org/) brings together data repositories and journals to discuss and address common challenges in support of more transparent and discoverable research and the supporting data.  Since the inception of COPDESS in 2014 and the completion of the Enabling FAIR Data Project in 2019, work has continued on the improvement of availability statements for data and software as well as corresponding citations.  </p><p>As the broad research community continues to make progress around data and software management and sharing, COPDESS is focused on several key efforts. These include 1) supporting authors in identifying the most appropriate data repository for preservation, 2) validating that all manuscripts have data and software availability statements, 3) ensuring data and software citations are properly included and linked to the publication to support credit, 4) encouraging adoption of best practices. </p><p>We will review the status of these current efforts around data and software sharing, the important role that repositories and researchers have to ensure that automated credit and attribution elements are in place, and the recent publications on software citation guidance from the FORCE11 Software Implementation Working Group.</p>

<p>MagIC (earthref.org/MagIC) is an organization dedicated to improving research capacity in the Earth and Ocean sciences by maintaining an open community digital data archive for rock and paleomagnetic data with portals that allow users access to archive, search, visualize, download, and combine these versioned datasets. We are a signatory of the Coalition for Publishing Data in the Earth and Space Sciences (COPDESS)'s Enabling FAIR Data Commitment Statement and an approved repository for the Nature set of journals. We have been in collaboration with EarthCube's GeoCodes data search portal, adding schema.org/JSON-LD headers to our data set landing pages and suggesting extensions to schema.org when needed. Collaboration with the European Plate Observing System (EPOS)'s Thematic Core Service Multi-scale laboratories (TCS MSL) is ongoing with MagIC sending its contributions' metadata to TCS MSL via DataCite records.</p><p>Improving and updating our data repository to meet the demands of the quickly changing landscape of data archival, retrieval, and interoperability is a challenging proposition. Most journals now require data to be archived in a "FAIR" repository, but the exact specifications of FAIR are still solidifying. Some journals vet and have their own list of accepted repositories while others rely on other organizations to investigate and certify repositories. As part of the COPDESS group at Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP), we have been and will continue to be part of the discussion on the needed and desired features for acceptable data repositories.</p><p>We are actively developing our software and systems to meet the needs of our scientific community. Some current issues we are confronting are: developing workflows with journals on how to publish the journal article and data in MagIC simultaneously, sustainability of data repository funding especially in light of the greater demands on them due to data policy changes at journals, and how to best share and expose metadata about our data holdings to organizations such as EPOS, EarthCube, and Google.</p>

<div><strong>Purpose:</strong> The purpose of this paper is to present best practices and areas of improvement in Technical Communication (TC) analyzed with Lean values as a base. The purpose is also to analyze the results from a holistic perspective using the Synergy-4 model, a multi-perspective approach which considers four different spheres of an organization at a time in order to discover synergies.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Methodology/Approach:</strong> To fulfill the purpose, 15 interviews in four different companies were conducted. These were then analyzed and the results were categorized into a number of predefined Lean areas. The results from the Lean values were then further analyzed with the Synergy-4 model as a base. </div><div> </div><div><strong>Findings:</strong> Taking a Lean perspective could enhance the status of TC with regard to finding ways to incorporate the customer’s voice more clearly when it comes to strengthening the role of TC. The result from the analyses indicates that Lean and Synergy-4 can enrich each other.</div>

Objective: To increase data quality and ensure compliance with appropriate policies, many institutional data repositories curate data that is deposited into their systems. Here, we present our experience as an academic library implementing and managing a semi-automated, cloud-based data curation workflow for a recently launched institutional data repository. Based on our experiences we then present management observations intended for data repository managers and technical staff looking to move some or all of their curation services to the cloud. Methods: We implemented tooling for our curation workflow in a service-oriented manner, making significant use of our data repository platform’s application programming interface (API). With an eye towards sustainability, a guiding development philosophy has been to automate processes following industry best practices while avoiding solutions with high resource needs (e.g., maintenance), and minimizing the risk of becoming locked-in to specific tooling. Results: The initial barrier for implementing a data curation workflow in the cloud was high in comparison to on-premises curation, mainly due to the need to develop in-house cloud expertise. However, compared to the cost for on-premises servers and storage, infrastructure costs have been substantially lower. Furthermore, in our particular case, once the foundation had been established, a cloud approach resulted in increased agility allowing us to quickly automate our workflow as needed. Conclusions: Workflow automation has put us on a path toward scaling the service and a cloud based-approach has helped with reduced initial costs. However, because cloud-based workflows and automation come with a maintenance overhead, it is important to build tooling that follows software development best practices and can be decoupled from curation workflows to avoid lock-in.

AbstractAstronomy has played a major part in the development of civilisations, not only through conceptual developments, but most importantly through the very practical gains obtained through the observation of Sun, Moon planets and stars. Space sciences, including astronomy, have also played a major rôle in the development of modern societies, as an engine for most subsequent space technology developments. Present trends tend to decrease the rôle of science in space development. This trend should be reversed to give modern “societies” their independence in space-related matters that permeate the lives of all inhabitants of the Earth.

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) can be a main lever towards a decarbonised road transport system. The PEV market uptake needs to be nurtured by appropriate support measures for users, for technological advances related to the vehicle and its components, and for all relevant recharging infrastructure deployment. This paper focuses on the role of PEV recharging infrastructure for electric passenger car uptake in Europe. It examines the status of road transport electrification, relevant policies, incentives and national plans. We find that the status and plans of PEV and recharging infrastructure and the corresponding support measures vary significantly between countries. The PEV share in the various analysed countries ranged in 2017 from 0.01% to 5.49% and is estimated to reach values between 0.05% and 12.71% in 2020. The corresponding ratio of PEV per one publicly accessible recharging point ranged between 1 and 60 and is estimated to vary between 3 and 161 in 2020. Diverging plans could lead to market fragmentation in the European Union (EU) and impede the EU-wide circulation of PEVs. The appropriate level of recharging infrastructure should be determined to both support PEV deployment and to prevent sunk investments. Different country experiences vis-à-vis PEV and infrastructure support could be useful to identify best practices.

&lt;p&gt;The ultimate goal of research data management is to achieve the long-term utility and impact of data acquired by research projects. Proper data management ensures that all researchers can validate and replicate findings, and reuse data in the quest for new discoveries. Research data need to be open, consistently and comprehensively documented for meaningful evaluation and reuse following domain-specific guidelines, and available for reuse via public data repositories that make them Findable, persistently Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the early 2000&amp;#8217;s, the development of geochemical databases such as GEOROC and PetDB underscored that the reporting and documenting practices of geochemical data in the scientific literature were inconsistent and incomplete. The original data could often not be recovered from the publications, and essential information about samples, analytical procedures, data reduction, and data uncertainties was missing, thus limiting meaningful reuse of the data and reproducibility of the scientific findings. In order to avoid that such poor scientific practice might potentially damage the health of the entire discipline, we launched the Editors Roundtable in 2007, an initiative to bring together editors, publishers, and database providers to implement consistent publication practices for geochemical data. Recognizing that mainstream scientific journals were the most effective agents to rectify problems in data reporting and implement best practices, members of the Editors Roundtable created and signed a policy statement that laid out &amp;#8216;Requirements for the Publication of Geochemical Data&amp;#8217; (Goldstein et al. 2014, http://dx.doi.org/10.1594/IEDA/100426). This presentation will examine the impact of this initial policy statement, assess the current status of best practices for geochemical data management, and explore what actions are still needed.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;While the Editors Roundtable policy statement led to improved data reporting practices in some journals, and provided the basis for data submission policies and guidelines of the EarthChem Library (ECL), data reporting practices overall remained inconsistent and inadequate. Only with the formation of the Coalition for Publishing Data in the Earth and Space Sciences (COPDESS, www.copdess.org), which extended the Editors Roundtable to include publishers and data facilities across the entire Earth and Space Sciences, along with the subsequent AGU project &amp;#8216;Enabling FAIR Data&amp;#8217;, has the implementation of new requirements by publishers, funders, and data repositories progressed and led to significant compliance with the FAIR Data Principles. Submission of geochemical data to open and FAIR repositories has increased substantially. Nevertheless, standard guidelines for documenting geochemical data and standard protocols for exchanging geochemical data among distributed data systems still need to be defined, and structures to govern such standards need to be identified by the global geochemistry community. Professional societies such as the Geochemical Society, the European Association of Geochemistry, and the International Association of GeoChemistry can and should take a leading role in this process.&lt;/p&gt;

Scientific data has traditionally been distributed via downloads from data server to local computer. This way of working suffers from limitations as scientific datasets grow towards the petabyte scale. A “cloud-native data repository,” as defined in this paper, offers several advantages over traditional data repositories—performance, reliability, cost-effectiveness, collaboration, reproducibility, creativity, downstream impacts, and access & inclusion. These objectives motivate a set of best practices for cloud-native data repositories: analysis-ready data, cloud-optimized (ARCO) formats, and loose coupling with data-proximate computing. The Pangeo Project has developed a prototype implementation of these principles by using open-source scientific Python tools. By providing an ARCO data catalog together with on-demand, scalable distributed computing, Pangeo enables users to process big data at rates exceeding 10 GB/s. Several challenges must be resolved in order to realize cloud computing’s full potential for scientific research, such as organizing funding, training users, and enforcing data privacy requirements.

One measure of the maturity of a device technology is the ease and reliability of applying contact metallurgy. Compared to metal contact of silicon, the status of GaAs metallization is still at its primitive stage. With the advent of GaAs MESFET and integrated circuits, very stringent requirements were placed on their metal contacts. During the past few years, extensive researches have been conducted in the area of Au-Ge-Ni in order to lower contact resistances and improve uniformity. In this paper, we report the results of TEM study of interfacial reactions between Ni and GaAs as part of the attempt to understand the role of nickel in Au-Ge-Ni contact of GaAs.N-type, Si-doped, (001) oriented GaAs wafers, 15 mil in thickness, were grown by gradient-freeze method. Nickel thin films, 300Å in thickness, were e-gun deposited on GaAs wafers. The samples were then annealed in dry N2 in a 3-zone diffusion furnace at temperatures 200°C - 600°C for 5-180 minutes. Thin foils for TEM examinations were prepared by chemical polishing from the GaA.s side. TEM investigations were performed with JE0L- 100B and JE0L-200CX electron microscopes.

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam which has a function of faith, social and economic functions. Muslims who can pay zakat are required to give at least 2.5 per cent of their wealth. The problem of poverty prevalent in disadvantaged regions because of the difficulty of access to information and communication led to a gap that is so high in wealth and resources. The instrument of zakat provides a paradigm in the achievement of equitable wealth distribution and healthy circulation. Zakat potentially offers a better life and improves the quality of human being. There is a human quality improvement not only in economic terms but also in spiritual terms such as improving religiousity. This study aims to examine the role of zakat to alleviate humanitarian issues in disadvantaged regions such as Sijunjung, one of zakat beneficiaries and impoverished areas in Indonesia. The researcher attempted a Cibest method to capture the impact of zakat beneficiaries before and after becoming a member of Zakat Community Development (ZCD) Program in material and spiritual value. The overall analysis shows that zakat has a positive impact on disadvantaged regions development and enhance the quality of life of the community. There is an improvement in the average of mustahik household incomes after becoming a member of ZCD Program. Cibest model demonstrates that material, spiritual, and absolute poverty index decreased by 10, 5, and 6 per cent. Meanwhile, the welfare index is increased by 21 per cent. These findings have significant implications for developing the quality of life in disadvantaged regions in Sijunjung. Therefore, zakat is one of the instruments to change the status of disadvantaged areas to be equivalent to other areas.
