Abstract. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has been well developed for several decades and is known for its powerful capability of retrieving three-dimensional ground information from SAR imagery. One of the most important application of InSAR technique is topographic mapping. The technique is limited when confronting certain poor conditions which lead to low coherence. In this research, we aim at investigating the relationship between SAR-based digital elevation models (DEMs) and related factors that contribute to the error budget by conducting a linear regression analysis. The surface deformation in line of sight (LOS) direction and the amount of integral refractivity change over two acquisition events are considered as two related factors. Eight pairs of Sentinel-1 images were selected to conduct InSAR processing over Chaiyi City of Taiwan, and SNAP software was used to generate SAR-based DEMs. The coherence mask was applied during the InSAR workflow in order to alleviate unwrapping error. The result has shown that the coherence thresholds help to improve the accuracy by up to 52.61%. Since some large errors were observed from the resulting InSAR-DEMs, these points were removed based on standard error. In regression analysis, there were 15 set of data, categorized by different coherence threshold and data removal standard, to test the model. As the result has shown, when the coherence threshold is 0.3 and the points were filtered with half standard error, the R2 can achieve 0.85. However, the rest of the dataset did not produce desirable results. In our discussion, we have provided several reasons which might have contributed to this outcome.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Interferometry (InSAR) is a powerful tool in radar remote sensing. However, due to the unavoidable inherent limits of the SAR mechanism, there are different challenges to be tackled based on the user’s aim of use. Common issues that have been discussed in the application of topography mapping are temporal decorrelation, surface deformation, atmospheric disturbance, and phase unwrapping problems. These difficulties expose the quality of the final DEM products under high risks, depending on the selection of InSAR image pairs and the environment of area of interest. In this research, we are aiming at investigating the relationship between the SAR-based digital elevation model (DEM) and the related factors which contribute to the error budget. This research will allow InSAR technique users to obtain a better understanding of the severity of errors that were induced by the factors. Furthermore, by knowing which factor degrades the InSAR-generated DEMs the most, one could accordingly apply appropriate methods to reduce the error.

In this research, eight pairs of Sentinel-1A images are used. They are characterized by a 12-day temporal baseline and over 90 meters of perpendicular baseline. The conventional InSAR processing workflow is conducted in each pair. In the post-processing stage, phase gradient removal is applied in order to mitigate unwrapping problems. Surface deformation and water vapor variation are chosen as two factors that introduce errors in InSAR DEM. GPS data are collected to obtain deformation information, and atmospheric water vapor data are collected by weather prediction models. Finally, the multiple linear regression analysis is applied in order to find out the relationship between SAR-based DEM and the selected factors.

Background: It is currently believed that protein folding rates are influenced by protein structure, environment and temperature, amino acid sequence and so on. We have been working for long to determine whether and in what ways mRNA affects the protein folding rate. A large number of palindromes aroused our attention in our previous research. Whether these palindromes do have important influences on protein folding rates and what’s the mechanism? Very few related studies are focused on these problems. Objective: In this article, our motivation is to find out if palindromes have important influences on protein folding rates and what’s the mechanism. Method: In this article, the parameters of the palindromes were defined and calculated, the linear regression analysis between the values of each parameter and the experimental protein folding rates were done. Furthermore, to compare the results of different kinds of proteins, proteins were classified into the two-state proteins and the multi-state proteins. For the two kinds of proteins, the above linear regression analysis were performed respectively. Results : Protein folding rates were negatively correlated to the palindrome frequencies for all proteins. An extremely significant negative linear correlation appeared in the relationship between palindrome densities and protein folding rates. And the repeatedly used bases by different palindromes simultaneously have an important effect on the relationship between palindrome density and protein folding rate. Conclusion: The palindromes have important influences on protein folding rates, and the repeatedly used bases in different palindromes simultaneously play a key role in influencing the protein folding rates.
