The past few decades saw the birth of the new science of genetics that can be used not only for medical purposes but also for the study of the past. Geneticists were quick to begin applying this science to the examination of Hungarian history, especially the subject of Hungarian origins. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with some of these studies. One study this paper will examine is itself a review of the scientific literature of early genetic studies on Hungarian origins. Other studies evaluated in this paper will be the English-language scientific publications of a team of Hungarian geneticists who over the last several years have studied the genetic inter-relatedness of 10th century and present-day Hungarian populations in the Middle Danube Valley of Central Europe. The paper comes to the conclusion that while very early genetic inquiries into Hungarian origins were often fault-ridden and are of little use now, more recent studies suggest that the currently held explanations of Hungarian ethnogenesis — especially the story of the so-called Hungarian conquest of the late 9th century — might very well be subjected to a fundamental re-assessment.

This chapter focuses on subject-centered developments in genetic research. Modern genetic research requires scientists to collect, store, and study DNA samples and health information from thousands of people. In the past, researchers have been allowed to use DNA samples and information without consent. Researchers have not been required to explain study results to subjects, nor have they been required to compensate people who contribute samples and health information to genetic studies. Experts developed these practices without input from the people whose contributions are essential to the genetic research enterprise. A growing amount of evidence shows that many research subjects and prospective subjects disagree with these traditional approaches. For ethical and practical reasons, subjects should have a greater role in determining how genetic research is conducted.

For decades the scholarly consensus held that the Fourth Gospel was either devoid of ethics or that its ethical material was narrow, exclusive, and sectarian. In recent years, that consensus has begun to show signs of wear. This article examines the more recent turn to ‘implied’ ethics by looking at four English-language books on the subject published in the past four years. This examination is undertaken with a view to tracing a newly emerging consensus, which holds that (1) the Gospel of John has ethical material, and (2) that material must be taken seriously by those reflecting on ancient ethical systems in general and New Testament ethics in particular. Further, the emerging consensus holds that the implied ethics of the Fourth Gospel, far from being strictly sectarian, are useful for reflecting on and/or constructing models of normative Christian behavior.

The issue of topical problems and promising areas of research of translanguaging as a communicative practice of multilinguals in English-language and Russian-language scientific publications of recent years is considered in the article. The results of a comparative analysis of scientific works on translanguaging, highlighting key supporting ideas and concepts, are presented. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that modern publications on translanguaging as a communicative practice that have not yet been analyzed or sufficiently covered in similar review works are summarized. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that translanguaging is a new idea on a historical scale, which has gained significant popularity over the past years, which, in turn, causes the need to systematize and streamline the array of scientific works that have accumulated during this time. A review of the approaches proposed by various authors to the content of the concept of “translanguaging” in those cases when the latter is considered as a communicative practice is performed, as well as of the methodological principles and foundations on which various studies of translanguaging as a communicative practice are built. Based on the analysis of publications, possible problems and promising areas of research in translanguaging are highlighted.

In the standard English-language reference work, The Encyclopedia of Philosophy, edited by Paul Edwards (New York and London, 1967), we find the following blunt statement on the subject of “orthodox Marxism's” theory of knowledge:Its epistemology is naive representationism. The use of the word “naive” will alert the reader to the unsurprising fact that the reference here is a definitely unfriendly one. More interesting is the way in which this characterization, based on an interpretation of Lenin's Materialism and Empirio-Criticism, has become generally accepted in English-speaking philosophical circles over the past forty years. The purpose of the present article is to explain the representationalist interpretation, challenge it in favour of an alternative reading of Lenin's text, and make some substantive comments on issues arising from the philosophical debate between the representationalist and anti-representationalist positions outlined.

Levodopa remains the primary drug for controlling motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease through the whole course, but over time, complications develop in the form of dyskinesias, which gradually become more frequent and severe. These abnormal, involuntary, hyperkinetic movements are mainly characteristic of the ON phase and are triggered by excess exogenous levodopa. They may also occur during the OFF phase, or in both phases. Over the past 10 years, the issue of levodopa-induced dyskinesia has been the subject of research into both the substrate of this pathology and potential remedial strategies. The purpose of the present study was to review the results of recent research on the background and treatment of dyskinesia. To this end, databases were reviewed using a search strategy that included both relevant keywords related to the topic and appropriate filters to limit results to English language literature published since 2010. Based on the selected papers, the current state of knowledge on the morphological, functional, genetic and clinical features of levodopa-induced dyskinesia, as well as pharmacological, genetic treatment and other therapies such as deep brain stimulation, are described.

There are many social problems in every human community, some of which are more prominent and others less prominent in public consciousness. One indicator of this is the number of scientific publications. This research aims to analyze the subject of disability through systematic literature research by examining studies and articles published on the theme, to cover the main publishing trends on disability. The author also aims to find a link between her own research topic - social inclusion of people with disabilities in the light of social marketing models - and already published scientific literature.

The attention of actuaries was directed to problems of population and resources in part of a paper read to the Institute in 1956. The general character of these problems has not changed during the past eleven years. Our understanding of the matters at issue has become deeper, however, as the result of new research. One way and another, a great deal has been written on the subject—sometimes revealing less about population than about the writer's philosophy or beliefs. In the English language alone, several hundred new references have been added to the list in recent years, and many of these have been read by the authors, whose original intention was to write a critical review of the latest literature. Recent writings are so diversified over a wide area of inquiry, however, that sharp disagreements are relatively few. In these circumstances, an expository treatment seems more appropriate than a critical appreciation of controversies, though ranges of views on particular topics can be discussed.

The first description and illustration of the duck-billed platypus appeared in the scientific literature in 1799. Since its international debut, the platypus has fascinated the scientific community. The past 200 years of scholarly literature is peppered with journal articles containing taxonomic revisions and details of the bizarre biology and behaviour of this paradoxical species. Yet, despite the fact that much of this historic literature is now accessible online, it is almost impossible to find. This is because, unlike contemporary scientific publications, much of the digitised historical literature lacks article-level citation data and digital object identifiers (DOIs). This paper will detail the work the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is undertaking to bring the world’s historic literature into the modern linked network of scholarly research. It will present three case studies – three “lost” platypus articles from three very different publications – to demonstrate how the retrospective registration of DOIs is critical to making legacy literature discoverable, citable and trackable. This paper will also discuss the responsibility and accountability that comes with assigning DOIs, including best practice for out-of-copyright and orphaned content, and the issues that arise when the definitive (DOI’d) versions of public domain journal articles are locked behind paywalls.
