Despite the fact that the dairy industry has an important position in the food industry (with an 18% share in its total production and sales), dairy businesses are currently struggling with low consumption of milk and dairy products. According to most researchers, the low consumption of milk and dairy products is mainly due to poor eating habits and, last but not least, insufficient promotion of these products. There is also an opportunity for private labels, which are recently on the rise, for which milk and dairy products are the most commonly purchased category of food. This paper aimed to find out how Slovak millennials perceive private labels, in which categories they buy them, what motivates them and on the contrary, discourages them from the purchase, etc. As the main research method, there was chosen the method of anonymous questionnaire survey involving 549 respondents from all over Slovakia; which was subsequently supplemented with a blind test. The submitted results of research declared that our goals were fulfilled and the following conclusions can be stated: Slovak millennials buy private labels in particular in the category of milk and dairy products, perceive private labels as an adequate alternative to their purchase and when purchasing milk and dairy products, they are mostly influenced by recommendations of family and friends and the tasting.

To date, little is known about how dietary patterns may link to measures of sleep quality in older subjects, who often suffer from sleep problems. Here, we investigated, in an older male population from Sweden (n = 970; aged 71 ± 1 year), whether adherence to the Healthy Diet Indicator (HDI; based on recommendations from the World Health Organization) or the Mediterranean Diet (MD) is linked to sleep disturbances. The diet scores were calculated using a seven-day food diary, and self-reported sleep initiation or maintenance problems were assessed by questionnaires. When adjusted for potential confounders, no associations between dietary scores and sleep parameters were found. In contrast, low consumption of milk and dairy products —one of the dietary features of the MD —was associated with better subjective sleep initiation. This association was, however, not found in men with adequate reports of daily energy intake (~54% of the cohort). To summarize, our findings do not suggest that older men can mitigate perceived difficulties to fall and stay asleep by adhering to either the HDI or MD. Whether low consumption of milk and dairy products can facilitate sleep initiation must be confirmed in future studies by utilizing objective measures of sleep such as polysomnography. Finally, when investigating associations between dietary patterns and sleep, particular attention should be paid to the potential confounder of inadequate reporting of energy intake.

A hygienic assessment of the eating habits of younger schoolchildren of Smolensk was carried out. A survey of 307 schoolchildren of 3–4 grades with various parameters of physical development in the field of nutrition and lifestyle was carried out. The respondents’ diet showed: insufficient and irregular consumption of food – sources of animal protein (meat, milk and dairy products, fish), lack of vegetables, popularity of fast-food products, sweets and sweet carbonated drinks. The violations in the diet and the level of motor activity are most pronounced in the group of children with overweight and obesity. The results confirm the need to develop preventive measures aimed at developing a healthy eating culture among schoolchildren.

There are special nutritional requirements in pregnancy, in which the intake of nutrients exerts its action both on the woman and the conception product. Therefore, the balance and diversity are the key of a proper nutrition during the pregnancy. Combining food categories is the best way to ensure nutritional balance during pregnancy period. A market research was performed on a representative sample at national level of 120 persons, in order to identify the nutritional status of pregnant women in this group. The market research highlighted the diet structure of the studied group, the categories of foods consumed weekly by the group members, as well as their frequency of consumption. The results of the study indicated a varied diet of pregnant women, but the frequency of consumption should be reviewed for certain food categories, thus: increased for: milk and dairy products, fish, oily fruits; lower, in fatty foods and salt.

Rational and irrational consumer behavior has already been the subject of several studies. Although their attention was mostly focused on traditional brands, these studies and their conclusions may also serve as a model for private label research, which is now increasingly coming to the forefront. Private labels are gradually becoming an adequate purchase alternative to traditional brands. The aim of the paper was to find out the influence of packaging and chosen marketing communication tools, on consumer purchasing decisions in the dairy segment. An anonymous questionnaire survey was chosen as the main research method, where participated 1,116 respondents from all over Slovakia; which was subsequently supplemented by the blind test involving 20 respondents under the age of up to 25 years. Seven chocolate-flavored yogurt samples were examined in the blind test; while the samples were such traditional brands by traditional producers as well as private labels. Interestingly, identical products were investigated ”“ products from the traditional producer, both under its brand and under the retailer's private label. The results of our research proved some interesting findings ”“ more than 28% of respondents buy private label products regularly and more than 53% buy them sporadically; whereas respondents do not buy private labels, mainly because of their lack of interest to try something new, assuming poor product quality and inadequate price; they buy them mainly because of lower prices compared to traditional product brands, comparable quality to traditional brands and good experience; respondents perceive private labels as good products of adequate quality and private labels evoke that products are adequate quality at a reasonable price. Although most respondents have no opinion on the packaging of private label products, more than 31% of them consider their packaging as unattractive and almost 36% think that their packaging does not affect them, but the results of the blind test partially refused this opinion.

Abstract Background Eating habits of childbearing age women are an important public health determinant. The inappropriate dietary pattern of women in reproductive age leads to deviations in their nutritional status with possible adverse health consequences for them and their offspring. Both malnutrition and over nutrition can adversely affect reproductive abilities of women as well as the course and outcome of a possible pregnancy. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study on dietary habits of 107 women, aged 19 to 42 years, in Varna, Bulgaria between March-December 2019. Exclusion criteria were pregnancy and lactation. A questionnaire was applied composed of questions on diet, dietary pattern, food frequency consumption, and the respondents' physical activity. The results were compared with the National Food Based Dietary Recommendations for Adults in Bulgaria. Data was statistically analysed with SPSS version 19. Results The average age of participants was 25.65 ± 7.48 years. 22.4% of the surveyed women followed no particular diet. 35.5% and 30.8% of the respondents had daily consumption of milk and dairy products respectively. Meat consumption 3-4 times a week was reported by 29.9% of the respondents. Only 1/4 of the respondents consumed fish each week. The relative share of women who did not consume fish was 10.3%. Daily consumption of fruits and vegetables was 42.1% and 57% respectively. Conclusions The majority of the surveyed women does not follow the National recommendations for consumption frequency of milk, dairy products, meat, fish, fruits and vegetables. Respondents who do not consume fish, meat or milk and dairy products are at risk of deficiencies of both micronutrients and macronutrients. It's necessary to raise awareness about healthy eating and associated health risks. Key messages Nutrition of women of childbearing age is an important factor affecting public health. Inadequate dietary habits before conception raises the risk for the course and outcome of pregnancy with consequences for offspring health.

Abstract A collaborative study was conducted on the recovery of viable Listeria monocytogenes from milk and dairy products (Camembert cheese, Limburger cheese, skim milk powder, and ice cream). Test portions were homogenized with Listeria-selective liquid enrichment medium and cultured at 30°C for 48 h. The enrichment culture was then subcultured onto a solid isolation medium at 37°C for 48 h. Suspected Listeria colonies were identified by appropriate conventional morphological, physiological, and biochemical tests. Five kinds of dairy matrixes were spiked with L. monocytogenes at 2 levels: 12 and 120 colony forming units (cfu)/25 g. Each of the 18 collaborating laboratories analyzed 15 blind test portions from each matrix, comprising 5 replicates at each spiking level and 5 uninoculated controls, for a total of 1350 analyses. The specificity of the method was 100%; its sensitivity was 94–100% at the high spiking level and 89–98% at the low spiking level, except for Limburger cheese, which was only 68%. No specificity or sensitivity differences were observed between laboratories for all matrixes at the high spiking level and for all except Limburger cheese at the low spiking level. The calculated 50% detection limit for all products except Limburger cheese was 1.6 cfu/25 g; the 50% detection limit for Limburger cheese itself was 4.1 cfu/25 g. The method was adopted first action by AOAC INTERNATIONAL.

It was established that 77,72 ± 1,38 % of students have normal nutritional status, 13,50 ± 2,57 %– inadequate nutritional status, and of 8,78 ± 2,70 % – redundant power status. A significant part of the diets account for bakery and confectionery products, at the same time revealed a low consumption of such basic foods as milk and dairy products, meat, fish. The energy value of the diets of the students were below the physiological norms by reducing the income of protein and carbohydrates. Students are also experiencing a shortage of virtually all vitamins and most minerals. It was established that the quality of life of students with different nutritional status differs, girls have reduced quality of life when excess nutritional status, in boys – while insufficient.
