During pregnancy there are physiological and psychological changes that can cause discomfort such as leg cramps, difficulty breathing, back pain, depression, anxiety and sleep disorders. The prevalence of low back pain is around 60-80% which can lead to strain on the ligaments and fatigue in the abdominal muscles, as well as balance disorders. This will lead to disruption of activities during pregnancy, such as difficulty walking and sleep disturbances. To assess low back pain and sleep quality among pregnant women: cross sectional study. Cross-sectional data were collected by 37 pregnant women with inclusion criteria were third trimester pregnant women, willing to be a respondent, with normal blood pressure, and have not received any medication related sleep disorder. They completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Rolland-Morris Disability Questionaire (RDQ), statistical analysis was conducted using Pearson Correlation Product Moment. Research was conducted in Semarang and Kudus. Sleep quality among pregnant women demonstrated significanly poor overall sleep quality with PSQI score (mean 8.70 ± 3.511) and RDQ score (mean 8.97 ± 6.414). There was moderate correlation between low back pain with sleep quality (r correlation = 0.558). Low back pain have correlation to increase or decrease sleep quality among preganant women.

Background: Hypothyroidism (HT) is associated with maternal and perinatal morbidity. Subclinical HT rather than overt occur in pregnancy, because overt HT causes infertility. Treatment of overt HT was beneficial in reducing the fetal and maternal complications, Usefulness of correcting subclinical hypothyroidism was doubtful, hence Universal screening of pregnant women was not recommended. Methods: Cross sectional study, conducted in the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Government Medical College, Thrissur, Kerala, India. 50 consecutive cases of subclinical hypothyroidism in pregnancy were analyzed for Thyroid function, antenatal, natal, postnatal complications. Perinatal complications, including neonatal hypothyroidism also noted. Statistical analysis done using computer software Epi info3.4. Data expressed in its frequency and percentage, continuous data in mean. Results: All women in the study group received levothyroxine during pregnancy from time of diagnosis. At the time of delivery 84% women were euthyroid and 16% hypothyroid. Complications like anemia 36%, abruption 4%, and postpartum hemorrhage 6% showed a statistically significant association, while pre-eclampsia 20%, preterm labor 22% had no statistically significant association. Comparing the women who are euthyroid as a result of levothyroxine supplementation to women inadequately treated, complications like anemia (33% versus 50%, p value 0.042), abruption (0% versus 4%, p value0.023), PPH (2% versus 6%, p value 0.014) were significantly less in well controlled. Conclusions: Significant association was noted between inadequately treated hypothyroidism and maternal complications like anaemia, placental abruption, placenta previa, PPH, preterm delivery, and caesarean section rate for foetal distress. Universal screening of pregnant women for thyroid status is recommended.

Background: The significance of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) relates to its potential to cause acute pyelonephritis, preterm labour and preterm rupture of the membranes. Additionally, it has been associated with clinical conditions such as anaemia, preterm birth, low birth weight and perinatal mortality. Aim: This study, therefore, determined the prevalence of ASB among pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic.  Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study using convenient sampling method was used to recruit 200 pregnant women attending antenatal care at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) from January – April 2014. Bacteriological, urine chemistry and routine urine analyses, as well as antibiotic susceptibility profile of bacterial isolates from mid-stream urine samples of pregnant women, were carried out using appropriate standard methods. Variables were reported in mean, standard deviation, percentages and bar graph. Chi-square test was used to establish statistical difference and association between variables where p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Out of the total participants, 23 had asymptomatic bacteriuria but no prevalence of ASB was found among Muslims. The association between marital status and the prevalence of ASB was significant (Pearson chi2 = 4.88, p-value = 0.027). Five bacterial isolates were obtained with Escherichia coli (43.6%) being the most prevalent organism. There were more negative reactions than positive reactions with regards to nitrite and leukocyte esterase determination. Both gram-positive and negative isolates recorded high susceptibility to Gentamicin and Norfloxacin. However, Ciprofloxacin showed a high rate of resistance to only gram-negative isolates whiles Chloramphenicol, Ampicillin and Amoxicillin showed high resistance to gram-positive isolates. Conclusions: The overall prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria was 11.5% [95%CI: 7.4% - 16.8%] among the referral pregnant women attending KBTH with Escherichia coli being the most prevalent organism whiles the most susceptible antibiotics were Gentamicin and Norfloxacin.

Abstract BackgroundThough evidence about the magnitude of malnutrition is well established in Ethiopia, the evidence is scarce about the association of nutritional status with academic performance among adolescents. Thus, this study aimed at determining the association of nutritional status with academic performance among adolescents attending secondary schools in Wolaita Sodo town, Southern Ethiopia.MethodsA facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 670 systematically selected adolescents in secondary schools of Wolaita Sodo town from April to June 2019. The academic performance of the adolescents was measured using the average mark score of two consecutive semester's results of the overall subjects. Data were analyzed with STATA software Version 15. Descriptive statistics, Pearson Correlation, and linear regression were used in the statistical analysis, and p-value < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.ResultsThe mean academic performance of students was 69.21 ± 0.42 (95% CI: 68.34%-70.02%). An average mark score of students increased by 1.89 (β = 1.89; 95%CI: 1.14, 2.64) for a unit increase in BMI for age z-score. Being female decreased an average mark score by 2.63 (β=-2.63; 95%CI: -4.28, -0.98) and being from a separated parents decreased by 4.73 (β=-4. 73; 95%CI: -6.73, -2.74). An average mark score of students from the lowest wealth class decreased by 9.92(-9.92; 95%CI: -12.79, -7.04) as compared to students from the highest wealth class. Attending private schools increased the average mark score of students by 4.18 (β = 4.18; 95%CI: 2.46, 5.90).ConclusionInterventions targeted at adolescents’ nutritional status should be designed and implemented. The town education office and concerned bodies should launch a school feeding program for government schools. Development and income-generating activities should target households with the lowest wealth status. Schools should give tutorial classes for female students.
