Human papilloma virus lesions are known to cause cervical cancer in persons infected by the virus. The incubation time between an oncogenic HPV infection and cervical cancer is 10-15 years hence preventive measures should be taken in adolescent age. HPV vaccines (Cervarix and Gardasil) reduce the risk of cancerous and precancerous lesion by more than 95%. These vaccines are to be admitted to young children before their sexual debut (11-12 years), since deemed as legal minors, parental consent is required for the administration of the virus. Parental knowledge about cervical cancer and HPV infections plays a vital role in their awareness about the presence of HPV vaccines and their willingness to get their child vaccinated against the same. The study consisted of a pre-validated questionnaire posed before the parents to know their knowledge and awareness regarding cervical cancer, human papilloma virus and sexual health. Background and objective: Lipocalin 2 (LCN2) has an oncogenic role in promoting tumorigenesis through enhancing tumor cell proliferation and the metastatic potential. The aim of our study was to determine whether serum LCN2 could serve as a diagnostic marker of cervical cancer (CC) and to evaluate the correlation between its serum concentration, the clinical stage of the cancer and Human Papilloma Virus HPV infections in women. Materials and methods: A total of 33 women with histologically proven cervical cancer (CC), 9 women with high- grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (HSIL) and 48 healthy women (NILM) were involved in the study. A concentration of LCN2 was assayed with the Magnetic LuminexR Assay multiplex kit. An HPV genotyping kit was used for the detection and differentiation of 15 high-risk (HR) HPV types in the liquid-based cytology medium (LBCM) and the tissue biopsy. Results: The majority (84.8%) of the women were infected by HPV16 in the CC group, and there was no woman with HPV16 in the control group (P < 0.01). Several types of HR HPV were found more often in the LBCM compared to in the tissue biopsy (P = 0.044). HPV16 was more frequently detected in the tissue biopsy than the LBCM (P < 0.05). The LCN2 level was higher in HPV-positive than in HPV-negative women (P = 0.029). The LCN2 concentration was significantly higher in women with stage IV than those with stage I CC (P = 0.021). Conclusions: Many HR HPV types, together with HPV16/18, can colonize the vagina and cervix, but often HPV16 alone penetrates into the tissue and causes CC. The serum LCN2 concentration was found to be associated not only with HR HPV infection, irrespective of the degree of cervical intraepithelial changes, but also with advanced clinical CC stage. LCN2 could be used to identify patients with advanced disease, who require a more aggressive treatment.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess knowledge of cervical cancer and its prevention among Omani women aged 20 to 65 years. Method: This analytic cross-sectional study took place at primary healthcare institutions, in the Al Buraimi governorate, Oman, between November 2018 I believe that in response to comment #5 too much information may have been removed from the Results section, therefore we return the first two paragraphs that were removed to the Results section and make them more concise during the copy editing stage.  and February 2019. The study was carried out on the basis of a predesigned, validated, and self-administered 55 question questionnaire. Results: Data from seven hundred and ninety-one completed questionnaires were included in the final analysis, which represents a response rate of 79.1% of the total. The results of the study indicated that 86.7 percent of surveyed women had previously heard of cervical cancer, and 13.0 per cent assumed the possibility of this disease to affect them in the future. The results showed that women had low awareness of the association between Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and cervical cancer (24.7%). Participants considered HPV infection and initiation of sexual intercourse at an age younger than 17 years as the lowest risks associated with cervical cancer. The results also indicated that 63.8% of women were unaware of a vaccination 'against HPV related cervical cancer' and many of respondents were unaware of Pap test. Women aged over 30 years, those married, and those with a high level of education were more likely to be aware of cervical cancer. Conclusion: General knowledge of cervical cancer among women aged 20 to 65 years is insufficient. Young women aged 20-30 are largely unaware. Thus, concerted efforts are needed to promote awareness among women in Oman. Keywords: Cervical cancer, risk factor, Human Papilloma Virus, vaccine, Pap test.

Human Papilloma Virus (hpv) infection causes different cancer diseases. Cervical cancer is the most common hpv related disease. hpv infection also causes cancer of anus, vulva, vagina, penis, skin, bladder, prostate, breast, oral and others because the hpv virus is epithelium-tropic. But the association of hpv infection other than cervical cancer, for example breast cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer etc is still inconclusive. Thus, the objective of this review was to collect published information on hpv infection other than cervix to explore the pooled prevalence of hpv infection as well as related types of cancers.  Publish research articles of hpv infection and cancer risks other than cervical cancer were systematically searched through Internet. The preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis guidelines were followed. Joanna Brigg’s Institute Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument (jbi-mastari) adapted for cross sectional/case control study design was used for quality assessment of each individual study. A total of 22 studies were extracted and analyzed using stata 14. The random effect model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence; whereas subgroup analysis and meta-regression was performed to identify the probable source of heterogeneity. Both Egger’s and Begg’s tests were used to check publication bias.  The totals of 486 studies were retrieved and 22 studies were included in this meta- analysis. The meta-analysis result showed that the pooled prevalence of hpv infection other than cervix was 34.36% (95% CI: 23.75, 44.97) with severe heterogeneity (I2 = 99.5%; p<0.001) with no publication bias. The highest pooled prevalence of hpv infection other than cervix was related to genital cancer which is 58.63% (95% CI: 51.86, 65.39), followed by oral cancer (47.15% with 95% CI: 19.67, 74.63). Although cervical cancer is primarily hpv induced cancer which well articulated with so many researches, other cancer types (based on the location of the hpv infection) are also increasing across the world based on this systematic and meta-analysis study. hpv infection increases the risk of developing cancers other than cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women in many developing countries constituting 20%-30% of female cancers. The etiological factors of cervical cancer include environmental, social, sexual and sexually transmitted agents including human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV has identified in 99.7% invasive cancer. Objective of the study was to find out the prevalence of HPV-DNA virus among diagnosed cases of preinvasive and invasive diseases and to find out different sociodemographic parameters related to carcinoma cervix. This was a cross sectional study. The study has conducted in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. Duration of study was from May 2005 to May 2006. Samples were collected from diagnosed cases of CIN I, II, III and CIS and invasive cancer. Thirty cases were recruited for collection of cervical scraping. Sample were collected of in a specially designed sampler containing liquid transport medium and preserved in minus 20 Degree Celsius and sent to the DNA laboratory for processing and identification of HPV by hybrid capture II method. The results were analyzed by using SPSS version 11.0 and shown in tables and diagrams. The risk factors for HPV infection identified from the result. These are early sexual activity, years of sexual activity, urban people, and higher number of pregnancies. The test could identify HPV-DNA in 100 % of invasive and 50 % of preinvasive cancer. In this study HPV infection was found as a strong determinant for the development of cervical carcinoma and its precursors. Poor socio-economic condition, lower level of education, early marriage and first delivery, multi-parity, years of sexual activity are the risk factors for developing HPV infection. New guidelines for cervical cancer screening strategies could be able to develop from the information obtained from this study. A population-based study with larger sample will be required for the evaluation of cervical cancer screening strategies. : Cervical cancer, a cancer arising from the uterine cervix has been regarded as the fourth most frequent gynecological malignancy among females worldwide. Epidemiological reports have shown that uterine cervical cancer is a global health issue among womens of specially developing countries and consequently creates an economic and medical burden in the society. The main causative agent of cervical carcinoma is high risk human papilloma virus (HPV 16 and HPV 18). Molecular studies have revealed the expression two viral genes E6 and E7 after HPV infection in the epithelial cells of cervix. These gene products are known to inactivate the major tumor suppressors, p53 and retinoblastoma protein (pRB), respectively. Moreover, the role of self-renewal pathways such as Hedgehog, Notch and Wnt has also been linked with drug resistance in cancer cells and epithelial mesenchymal transition during metastasis in pathogenesis of cervical cancer. Although, the mechanism of interaction of HPV E6 and E7 with each and every component of above described developmental pathways is not elucidated yet, but preliminary reports of their crosstalk have begun to emerge. Understanding the interplay between these oncoproteins and developmental/self-renewal pathways is highly important in terms of designing new and targeted therapeutic approach against cervical cancer. Hence, this review cynosure the carcinogenesis of HPV with the brief description of its virology and also establishes the crosstalk between oncoproteins E6 & E7 and Hedgehog, Notch and Wnt signaling pathway.

Background: Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death in india. it is also one of the few malignancies where an infectious etiological agent human papilloma virus (HPV) has been identified. With the advent of HPV vaccination, it is possible to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with carcinoma cervix. But biggest hurdle to achieve this is the lack of awareness about the availability and use of HPV vaccine. This study was conducted to know knowledge and awareness of HPV infection and vaccination among medical and paramedical students. We also evaluated the acceptability and coverage of HPV vaccine among these students.Methods: This study was conducted among a total of 520 female students of the Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University with the help of a questionnaire. The study group included 207 MBBS students, 167 BDS students, 89 nursing students and 57 physiotherapy students.Results: Most of the students were in 18-20 years’ age group. Nearly 40.57% of the students knew that HPV is sexually transmitted and 29.80% were aware that this infection can be prevented. Availability of HPV vaccine was known to 75% of the students and the main source of their information was through their college teachings. Nearly 43.75% of the students knew HPV vaccine protects against cervical cancer and 26.73% of the students were vaccinated. Overall knowledge and awareness were better among medical students.Conclusions: A lot of work needs to be done so as to make the target population accept HPV vaccine. There is a great difference between awareness of availability of the vaccine and its use. This emphasizes the need for health care professionals to take special interest in promoting this vaccine in the general population.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The primary risk factors for aquiring HPV are generally associated with sexual activity.  Evidence suggest that condoms provide some protection against infection and disease progression, but any genital contact is sufficient for HPV transmission.  Having more than one sexual partner often result in HPV infection.  All sexually active adolescents are at high risk for aquiring HPV.  Persistent infection with high-risk HPV types (e.g HPV 16 or 18) is considered necessary for the development cervical cancer.  Most infection are asymptomatic and are efficiently cleared by he immune system.  The lesions that caused by HPV can regress in adolescent and young adult women.  A small percentage of adolescents will develop precancerous lesions that may progress to invasive cervical cancer.  Adolescents should be given appropriate education about HPV and the dangers associated with infection.  Vaccination for HPV infection should be given for presexually active children and adolescents.Key words: human papilloma virus, adolescent, cervical cancer, vaccination.

Background: There is no Government endorsed HPV vaccine immunisation program in Nigeria. The Vaccine has been available at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Benin City for more than 7 years. Objectives: The aim was to evaluate awareness about HPV, the prevalence of HPV immunisation and its associated factors among the study population. Methods: A cross-sectional study using interviewer-administered questionnaires among 215 females attending secondary schools in Benin city, Nigeria. Participants were selected using multi-stage stratified sampling. The primary outcome measure was HPV immunisation of the girls. Results: The majority of the participants were between 14 to 18 years (58.6%). Almost all the participants (>97%) had not heard of HPV, HPV Vaccines and Cervical cancer. In addition, 2 (0.9%) persons correctly identified that the virus can be transmitted sexually while only 1 person (0.5%) had received the HPV vaccine. The respondents all agreed that they needed to be enlightened about HPV, HPV vaccines and Cervical cancer. Majority (49.3%) of the girls suggested that this could be done through the mass media (49.3%) or their parents (32.1%). Conclusion: HPV immunisation, knowledge of HPV vaccines and Cervical cancer among the study population was very low. We recommend interventions in Schools to increase knowledge about cervical cancer and HPV vaccines. Keywords: Human papilloma virus; vaccines; cervical cancer; Nigeria.

Background: Cervical cancer is fifth most common cancer worldwide and second most common cancer in women in India, with an incidence of 1,22,844 cases and accounts for over 67,477 deaths annually (GLOBOCON 2012). Although vaccines are available to prevent the cervical cancer there is lack of awareness regarding the same. Hence the present study has been proposed. The objective was to study the awareness of human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination among the medical students.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between September 2017 to December 2017 among the medical students. All those who gave consent were included and a predesigned, pretested proforma consisting of variables about demographic characteristics, HPV, vaccination and the other necessary information required for the study was collected.Results: 72.4% of the participants were aware of the HPV infection, 70.5% about the HPV vaccination and 69.5% of the participants thought that only females should be vaccinated. 52.3% of the participants expressed interest for vaccination. Interns had 100% awareness about the infection and vaccination. Students who were not interested in vaccination, 18.9% of them said they are not sexually active, 8.5% thought there was no need of vaccine, 6.1% felt vaccine is too expensive and 1.3% worried about the safety of the vaccine. Sources of information was mainly through lectures/textbooks (64.8%) followed by doctors/healthcare facility (20.9%).Conclusions: Study revealed appreciable level of awareness among the participants. With this study, the participants are encouraged to get vaccinated as the age group of participants is appropriate for the vaccination.
