The Utilization of Modified Listen-Read-Discuss Strategy to Teach Reading Comprehension

This research was quantitative research and considered as true experimental. The objectives of the research were to find out whether modified Listen-Read-Discuss technique can be used to improve students’ reading comprehension better than original LRD or not and the reading aspect that improved the most after the students received the treatments. The sample of this research was 35 students in control class and 34 students in experimental class. The data of this research was collected through reading test. After the data were collected, the researcher used independent t test to analyze the data. From the analysis, it was found that the original and modified LRD were able to improve reading comprehension significantly and modified LRD technique enabled the students to improve their reading better than original one. The last finding of this research was determining reference the most improved reading aspect in experimental class while finding specific information was the most improved aspect in control class. In short, modified LRD technique can enhance students’ reading comprehension better than original one since it added outlining strategy which arranged information based on concept. This research aimed to find out the students’ problems in answering reading comprehension questions of descriptive text in the “Mandiri” textbook published and the causes of students’ problems in answering reading comprehension questions of descriptive text in the “Mandiri” textbook published by Erlangga at SMPN 1 Kepahiang. The design of this research was a descriptive quantitative research. This research was designed based on the problems identified and arranged to adjust the main purpose of the research, so that the researcher employed descriptive method. The researcher took 50 students as the sample of this research. The instruments of this study were reading test and interview guideline. The researcher used a reading test in multiple choice forms consisted of fourty numbers of questions included in Mandiri textbook published by Erlangga. Another instrument was an interview guideline. The interview guideline was arranged based on the result of the reading test to reconfirm the result of the reading test and to get an indepth data on the causes of students’ difficulties in reading comprehension. The findings of this research were; (1) the students’ problems in answering reading comprehension questions of descriptive text in the “Mandiri” textbook published by Erlangga at SMPN 1 Kepahiang were finding main idea, identifying specific information, inference, and vocabulary; (2) there were four causes of students’ problems in answering reading comprehension questions of descriptive text in the “Mandiri” textbook published by Erlangga at SMPN 1 Kepahiang; (a) finding main idea is rather complicated, the students need to read the text repeatly to find the main idea; (b) the students need to read from the beginning to finish this description so that they can get the information and answer the questions given; (c) to find inferences they must know the text well and clearly; (d) There are some words that they find difficult to understand and they have never met. They answered that there are some words which are not familiar to them.

This study was intended to analyze whether Information has significant effect toward students’ reading comprehension. The method of this research was quantitative approach and applied pre-experimental design by using pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was whole of the first-grade students of SMKS DARUL QUR’AN BENGKEL which was consisted of one class with the total number of populations was 29 students in X TKJ Group Class as population sample. The class was treated by using Students Information Search. The instrument used in this research was reading test, in form of multiple choices test which was consisted of 25 items. The data was analyzed using t-test. The result of the data analysis indicated that Information Search has significant effect towards students’ reading comprehension. The result of statistical computation confirmed that the result of sig. two-tailed is differ from the value significant level (0.000 ≠ 0.05). the researcher also found the result of t-table was 2.061 lower then t-test 12.679. This result indicated that Alternative Hypothesis was accepted and Null Hypothesis was rejected, therefore it can be concluded that there is significant effect of Information Search towards students’ reading comprehension.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the reading comprehension skills of the descriptive text and the writing skills of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Bonjol. This research used quantitative research using a descriptive correlational design. In this study, there were two variables, namely the X variable and the Y variable. The X variable was the reading comprehension skill, while the Y variable was the description text writing skill. The research instruments were objective tests and performance tests. The data of this study are the results of the reading comprehension skills test and the results of the descriptive text writing skills test. The test results were compared using the t-test formula to determine the correlation between the reading comprehension skills and the descriptive text writing skills of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Bonjol. There are three results in this study. First, the reading skills of grade VII students of SMP Negeri 1 Bonjol are in good qualifications with an average score of 81.65. Second, the writing skills of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Bonjol are in good qualifications with an average score of 78.58. Third, based on the results of the t-test, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between comprehension reading skills and the descriptive text writing skills of seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Bonjol.

This study aims to determine the use of reading techniques that are effective and efficient, and to determine whether there is an effect of skimming reading techniques on students' reading comprehension skills to identify the intrinsic elements present in drama texts read by grade VIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah Tangerang City. This research is a quantitative research. Data collection techniques using tests, namely pretest and posttest. The results of this study indicate the influence of the ability to identify the intrinsic elements of drama text on students who use skimming reading techniques. This effect has been carried out with the results of the t-test. Then it shows the results of t count 0.233 <t table 1.977, t count is smaller than t table, this shows that there is no significant difference between the experiment class students and the control class students on the ability to identify the intrinsic elements of drama text. After the pretest is done posttest to find out, it shows the results of t count 1.982> t table 1,800, t count is greater than t table shows that there is a difference in the ability to identify the intrinsic elements of drama text between students who receive learning about the use of skimming reading techniques and students who get conventional learning. From the data obtained like what is listed above, it can be concluded that there is an effect of using skimming reading techniques on the ability to identify the intrinsic elements of drama text in class VIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah Tangerang City

This research was aimed to find out whether there was significant effect of using read, cover, remember and retell (RCRR) strategy on students’ English reading comprehension. The design was a quasi-experimental research. The sample consisted of 60 students; 30 students for experiment group and 30 students for control group. The instrument was reading test which comprised 30 multiple choice (4 options) question with r=0,86 .The research finding were as follows; 1). RCRR strategy affected students’ reading comprehension in whole reading comprehension RCRR strategy affected students’ reading comprehension in various aspect of reading comprehension, 2). RCRR strategy affected the students’ reading comprehension in the aspect of finding main idea, 3).RCRR strategy affected the students’ reading comprehension in the aspect of making inference, 4).RCRR strategy affected the students’ reading comprehension in the aspect of understanding vocabulary and determining reference. However, RCRR strategy did not affect the students’ reading comprehension in the aspect of identifying specific information. Further study is recommended for medical school.

This research is conducted in investigating whether Partner Reading Strategy affects on students’ Reading Comprehension ability in descriptive text. The problem of this research is “What is the effect of Partner Reading strategy significantly for students’ reading comprehension at grade eight of SMP N7 Pematangsiantar?”. To solve the problem of this research, the researchers used related theories ; Grellet (1997), Nunan (1991), Melanie and Paula (2008) and Patel, Jain (2008), Pammun (2017), Snow et al (2002), Dorn and Soffos (2005 ) and Grade (2014). This research was done in SMP N 7 Pematangsiantar. In this research, the researchers conducted an experimental quantitative research. The population of this research was the eight grade of SMP N 7Pematangsiantar The samples of this research were two classes, they were 62students The first class was 31 students of experimental class who had been taught by Partner Reading Strategy and the second was 31 students of control group who had been taught by conventional method. The instrument for collecting the data was 20 items of multiple choice test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula in order to see whether Partner Reading Strategy significantly affect on students’ reading comprehension or not. The total score of pre-test in control group is 1065, mean 34.35 and the total score of post-test in control group is 1355, mean is 45,16, meanwhile the total score of pre-test in experimental group is1525, mean is 49.19 and the total score of post-test in experimental group is 2470, mean is79.67. The finding indicates that the value of t-test exceeds the value of t-table (8.77> 1,67), at the level of significant p = 0,05 and the degree freedom df= 60. The finding implies that the alternative hypo research is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of Partner Reading Strategy on the students reading comprehension.

The purpose of this research was to implement the skimming technique and analyze its influence in the student comprehending reading texts at the eleventh grade (XI TKJ) of SMK N 3 Metro. In this research the researcher gave pretest to know the students’ ability in understanding reading texts and posttest to know the result of the students’s ability in reading text after giving the skimming technique.This research was quantitative research which had been conducted in SMK N 3 Metro at the class XI TKJ and followed by 70 students as the sample. The tehnique sampling was cluster random sampling. In collectting the data the researcher used test. The researcher used the test to get the data of student’s reading comprehension through the questions which consisted of 30 multiple choices  about the reading text. This test was used to figure out whether the skimming technique was suitable and could be used by the students in comprehending the reading texts. The analysis which was used by the researcher was t-test. Finally, the data indicates that t observed  = 23.945 is higher than t table = 2.99. Therefore, it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that the skimming technique influences the students’ reading comprehension at the eleventh graders of SMK N 3 Metro in the academic year of 2010/2011.

The purpose of this study is to determine the improvement of the ability to understand mathematical concepts with problem-solving learning modification better than the ability to understand mathematical concepts with conventional learning. This research is a quantitative research type of quasi-experiment. Hypothesis test used in this research is t-test. The result of research indicates that the improvement of students' mathematical concept comprehension ability using problem-solving learning modification is better than the ability to understand mathematical concept using conventional learning.

The problem in this study was the students’ reading comprehension on the first semester of Management Program at Islamic University of Indragiri Tembilahan. This research only used one variable was reading comprehension. The research method used in this study was a descriptive research. The purpose of this study was to know the students’ reading comprehension on the first semester of Management program at Islamic University of Indragiri Tembilahan. The total of the population used in this study were 163 students, the technique was used to take the sample is random sampling, the sample of this study was 25% from the population were 41 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used a reading test. After the data has been collected, the result of test shows that the students’ reading comprehension was categorized as Average to Good because 59,39 in range 51-75, it is mean that the students should be improve their reading comprehension to be better than it.

The problem focus of this research is to improve students reading comprehension by using Know-Want-Learned (KWL), to make the students comprehend the text, And how the students make their own conclusion about the text. The object of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu that were divided into two group that was controlled group and experimental group. The aim was to know their improvement after the treatment of KnowWant-Learned (KWL) technique. This research was quantitative research, and the procedure of collected the data were observation, interview, Pre test, treatment, and Post Test. The data analysis used statistical analysis that was descriptive analysis. Statistical analysis is used to test the hypothesis. And the formula used to test the hypothesis was t-test with the level of significance 0,05. The result showed that the application of Know-Want-Learned (KWL) strategy was successful in improving students’ reading comprehension. It can be proven with the result oftest of significance (t-test) was 0,2496. It means the result of t-test is more than level of significance (0,05). Based on the conclusion above, suggested to the teacher especially English teacher is to use Know-Want-Learned (KWL) strategy or find out the other method to make thestudents interest to the material.
