Azetidin-2-ones (β-lactams) and its derivatives are an important group of heterocyclic compounds that exhibit a wide range of pharmacological properties such as antibacterial, anticancer, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and anticonvulsant. Efforts have been made over the years to develop novel congeners with superior biological activities and minimal potential for undesirable side effects. The present review aimed to highlight some recent discoveries (2013-2019) on the development of novel azetidin-2-one-based compounds as potential anticancer agents.

Benzoxazoles being structurally similar to bases adenine and guanine interact with biomolecules present in living systems. These compounds possess antimicrobial, central nervous system activities, antihyperglycemic potentiating activity, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory activity. It can also be used as starting material for other bioactive molecules. Modifications in structure and the biological profiles of new generations of benzoxazoles were found to be more potent with enhanced biological activity. Considering all these, we have prepared this review and discussed the synthesis and biological activities of benzoxazoles.

Dittrichia viscosa is a plant widely distributed in the Mediterranean region. This species and its components present a broad range of biological activities (for example, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiulcer, antiviral, antiparasitic), which are reviewed. Extracts of the species are particularly rich in terpenoids, in particular eudesmane acids, notably ilicic acid (45) and α-costic acid (44). Flavonoids are also abundant, especially during flowering.

Chaetoglobosins belonging to cytochalasan alkaloids represent a large class of fungal secondary metabolites. To date, around 100 chaetoglobosins and their analogues have been isolated and identified over the years from a variety of fungi, mainly from the fungus Chaetomium globosum. Studies have found that chaetoglobosins possess a broad range of biological activities, including antitumor, antifungal, phytotoxic, fibrinolytic, antibacterial, nematicidal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-HIV activities. This review will comprehensively summarize the biological activities and mechanisms of action of nature-derived chaetoglobosins.

In order to elucidate the relationship between the structure and biological activity such as anti-HIV and blood anticoagulant activity, sulfonated polysaccharides and amino-polysaccharides having pentofuranosidic structures were synthesized. These sulfonated polysaccharides had potent anti-HIV activity in spite of low molecular weights, and which was dependent on the degree of sulfonation. For the blood anticoagulant activity, the conformation of polymer backbone and sulfamide group plays an important role on the interactions with the blood anticoagulant factor.

Pyrano- and dipyranocoumarins are classes of naturally occurring organic compounds with very interesting biological activities. This review focuses on the synthetic strategies for the synthesis of pyranocoumarins and dipyranocoumarins and the biological properties of those compounds. The synthesis involves the formation of the pyran ring, at first, from a coumarin or the formation of pyranone moiety from an existing pyran. Pyranocoumarins and dipyranocoumarins present anti-HIV, anti-cancer, neuroprotective, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory activities. Especially khellactones and calanolides are usually potent and selective in anti-HIV activity. Decursin and decursinol derivatives are effective as anticancer, neuroprotective, antidiabetic, antibacterial, and antifungal agents.
