The COVID-19 pandemic has engendered a new era throughout the globe in which online food delivery apps have become a significant aspect of an individual's everyday life. This study intends to probe into the nature and patterns of consumer behavior with regard to using online food delivery services during the pandemic. While most of the existing studies focus on the general aspects of consumer behavior regarding food delivery apps, this paper aims to understand what factors motivated consumers in Bangladesh to behave in certain patterns while deciding to or not to avail app-based food delivery services during a major global crisis. Data have been collected from both primary and secondary sources, with 552 participants responding to a structured questionnaire. The study revealed that a moderately large group of people used food delivery apps, especially between June and August, by placing their trust in the food delivery companies, the restaurants and the deliverymen while the rest of the population was not as confident. The minds of the second group of consumers were heavily shrouded in uncertainty regarding whether the deliverymen, restaurants or delivery companies could be trusted with following all the required safety precautions while providing their service. In future, the findings of this study will, therefore, help the food delivery companies and the restaurants to understand the importance of adopting and following stricter health and safety measures to avoid losing business during a global pandemic.

Uber-Grab’s merger had attracted antitrust scrutiny by competition authorities in Southeast-Asia. The merger between the two had created a large giant company that provides various services through a platform such as ridesharing and food delivery services. According to the deal, Grab will take over Uber’s assets (ridesharing and food delivery service), and in return, Uber will take a 27.5 percent stake in Grab. Although Grab claimed that the merger would create a cost-efficient platform in Southeast Asia and put it in a better position to serve consumers, there was a genuine concern that the merger will reduce competition in the market and provide incentives to Grab to engage in anti-competitive behaviour such as increasing the price of its services. This article aims to analyse how different countries in Southeast Asia responded to the Uber-Grab’s merger and measures taken to address competitive concerns ex-ante and ex-post-merger. Unlike other competition jurisdictions in Southeast-Asia, the Malaysia Competition Act 2010 contains no merger control provision, which empowers the Malaysian competition authority to block any merger that has the effect of substantially lessening competition. The studies on how other countries evaluated the Uber-Grab merger could assist Malaysia’s competition authority to regulate the future behaviour of the big digital platform in the Malaysian market. This article was written based on research that relies on both primary and secondary sources. Primary sources include statutory provisions on competition, decision, proposed decision, interim measures, and others. while secondary sources include journal articles, news, internet resources, and others. The article also adopts a comparative approach in order to analyse the approaches and measures taken by the various merger control regimes in Southeast Asia in dealing with the Uber-Grab’s merger.

The online food delivery market in India perseveres to grow at a sustained pace. The business has unique dynamics and challenges with the spike in orders during weekends, meeting delivery schedules during peak demand, offering deep discounts to address wavering customer loyalty, reducing cash burns, and managing food quality inconsistency. In contrast, the fast-paced life and the rise of millennials in the workforce is likely to assure a promising future for the food aggregators. The above backdrop has led the researchers to pursue this study. An empirical study was carried out to explore the consumption occasion and the antecedents of online food ordering in the select cities in Karnataka, India. The data was collected from 385 respondents through telephonic and mail survey using a structured questionnaire. The responses were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression. The result of the study indicated a positive association between the constructs ‘buying motives’, ‘aggregator attractiveness’, and customer satisfaction. The variation in customers` satisfaction is largely attributable to the convenience of order placing, food quality, availability of food and restaurant reviews, offers and discounts, faster home delivery, and the wide choice of restaurants listed on the aggregator’s website. Additionally, the aggregator attractiveness showed a higher impact on customer satisfaction as compared to buying motives.

Purpose This study aims to understand the consumer behavior in the context of online food delivery services that has become crucial for all the players in the market to meet their bottom line, especially given the fact that COVID-19 has altered the mindset of consumers. The current perception was addressed and analyzed to understand the trends. So, this study examined various parameters such as e-services quality, food quality (FQ), safety measures (SM), customer satisfaction (CS) and customer loyalty (CL) in correlation to each other. Design/methodology/approach An online survey was conducted for users of the online food delivery services to understand the intentions during the month of June 2020. The total number of responses gathered were 201. The responses collected were analyzed based on the constructs formed for the following tests: reliability, convergent and discriminant analysis. Also, principal component analysis was performed to ensure that the variables are correlated to each other. This ensured that the structural equation model built is valid and of best fit. The hypotheses were tested for the discussed variables, and the results were presented accordingly. Findings The research has indicated that FQ plays a vital role for CS which indirectly influences CL. Also, the SM adopted by a restaurant and delivery service will help retain their customer base, thus ensuring loyalty. Practical implications The study will help managers of restaurants and online food platforms reorient their business model and framework according to the parameters that affect the mindset of the consumer and also help improve the retention of their customer base. Originality/value This study is original in nature and takes onto account the COVID-19 situation. The study provides insights for online food platforms to touch mainly the pain points and insights by the consumer which will aid in developing new strategies for business development and customer retention in the future.

Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, outpatient caregivers are exposed to new serious health threats at work. To protect their health, effective occupational health and safety measures (OHSM) are necessary. Outpatient caregivers (n = 15) participated in semi-structured telephone interviews in May/June 2020 (1) to examine the pandemic-related OHSM that have been implemented in their outpatient care services, as well as (2) to identify their corresponding unmet needs. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed by using qualitative content analysis in accordance with Mayring. Available OHSM in outpatient care services described by outpatient caregivers mainly included personal protective equipment (PPE) and surface disinfection means after an initial shortage in the first peak of the pandemic. Further OHSM implied social distancing, increased hygiene regulations and the provision of pandemic-related information by the employer, as well as the possibility to consult a company doctor. Our study revealed that OHSM were largely adapted to the health threats posed by COVID-19, however an optimum has not yet been achieved. There is still a need for improvement in the qualitative and quantitative supply of PPE, as well as on the organisational level, e.g., with regard to the development of pandemic plans or in work organisation.

The present paper extrapolates quantitative data for ozone virucidal activity on the basis of the available scientific literature data for a safe and effective use of ozone in the appropriate cases and to explore the safety measures developed under the stimulus of the current emergency situation. Ozone is a powerful oxidant reacting with organic molecules, and therefore has bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal actions. At the same time, it is a toxic substance, having adverse effects on health and safety. Its use is being proposed for the disinfection of workplaces’ and public places’ atmosphere, and for disposable masks and personal protective equipment disinfection for reuse, with particular reference to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Ozone can be generated in situ by means of small, compact ozone generators, using dried ambient air as a precursor. It should be injected into the room that is to be disinfected until the desired ozone concentration is reached; after the time needed for the disinfection, its concentrations must be reduced to the levels required for the workers’ safety. The optimal use of ozone is for air and surface disinfection without human presence, using a concentration that is effective for the destruction of viruses, but not high enough to deteriorate materials.
