Blended learning is a pragmatic approach to education, combining online and traditional methods, applied extensively in the fields of English as a first, second and foreign language. The present study examined the effectiveness of the blended learning approach for the development of the reading skills of undergraduate students. Participants were 60 Thai students divided into experimental and control groups. Post-tests of each group were used as the main method of data collection, with a t-test being utilized to examine any differences between post-test scores. Statistically significant differences (t = 32.098; sig = .000) were investigated for effect size utilizing a Cohen’d test. Results revealed a significant effect size (Cohen’d = 3.937). The implications of this study suggest that the implementation of blended learning could considerably improve the English language reading skills of undergraduate students studying English as a foreign language.

The article deals with the improvement of future dentists’ foreign language competence formation based on the Cambridge methods of English language teaching. Future dentists have a strong need to receive professional knowledge from foreign sources and communicate to their colleagues. Moreover the foreign language competence is an important part of professional competence. Thus foreign language competence formation of future dental specialists contains certain diversity; it is not typical for other specialties. As a result it requires thorough analysis of Cambridge methods of English language teaching in order to adapt and improve them for future dentists. On the base of own pedagogical experience this advanced methodology was designed as student-centered one and includes new improved tasks for better language competence formation. Original Cambridge methodology was also improved by implementing the new “verification” stage of the lesson. This methodology was applied at the Bologolets Nalional Medical University and has brought positive results. It will become the base of increasing level of competitiveness not only in our country and abroad as well.

ABSTRACT Previous studies argued that summarizing techniques can improve students skill to comprehend a reading text, but those studies did not address what type of summarizing teachniques and how to apply them, in particular in Islamic schools context in which their studdents often study rich textual documents. Through the use of the experimental method, this study implemented Content-Based Summarizing Technique (CBST) in teaching English reading skill at two State Islamic Senior High Schools (Madrasah Aliyah Negeri) in Palu, Central Sulawesi. After 12 weeks teaching, this study found that students who were taught by using CBST have significantly improved their reading skill to comprehend a reading text. Meanwhile, the non-CBST treatment students’ reading skill remain stable. This study concludes  that the use of CBST in English reading teaching can be used as a new alternative technique in English teaching. The limitation of this study is that the treatment might not be long enough and the sample small. Future research need to involve more sample and apply longer treatment period. How to Cite: Aratusa, Z. C. (2017). The composition of English language learning tools for middle schools has often not utilized the instrctional technology approach and only used approaches related to the educational discipline of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). English language learning materials in several middle schools in East Java also do not provide audio media-based activities for practice of listening skills. This article is the research results of the Borg & Gall research and development model which aimed to develop, validate, and test textual learning materials aided by audio recordings to develop the English-language competency of middle school students. The results of the development showed that audio media was proven to be e ectively capable as sca olds that play a role as learning aids. Audio media provides sound input that guides students to imitate the audio with accurate pronunciation. In addition, audio media input can also be comprehensible for students in accordance with the Input Hypothesis Theory of Krashen that states that those learning languages at “level i” should obtain comprehensible input at “level i + 1” or slightly higher than the current level, and this theory of Krashen is identical to the zone of proximal development (ZPD) theory of Vygotsky. This development also resulted in a learning design which applied the audio lingual communicative (ALC) strategy which is eclectic in its combination of two language learning strategies, which are the audio lingual method with communicative language teaching (CLT). The application of this method was appropriate with the Indonesian classroom context where the number of students in a classroom is on average 40 pupils or more.

Since the end of World War II, English has become the virtual lingua franca of the planet. However, this development carries significant ethical and educational questions: What are the consequences of the worldwide dominance of the English language? How has it affected and how will it affect the fortunes of other languages? What can and should we as educators to do to minimize or eliminate the harmful effects on some of the endangered languages of the world? This paper will invite educators into a philosophical discussion of the ethical complexities of teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language.
